OH-Sen: Paul Hackett is Running for U.S. Senate

Posted by Bob Brigham

Via a dailykos diary, we learn Paul Hackett is running:

WASHINGTON -- Paul Hackett, the Iraq War veteran from Cincinnati who was hailed by national Democrats for his narrow loss this summer in a heavily Republican House district, has quickly moved up in rank to challenge Mike DeWine for U.S. Senate in 2006.

"Paul Hackett is running for U.S. Senate," said spokesman David Woodruff, who served as Hackett's campaign manager in his special election campaign for the 2nd District House seat against Rep. Jean Schmidt.

"He is planning to announce his decision officially on Oct. 24," Woodruff said Monday, adding an event would be held that day in Cincinnati, from which Hackett would begin a statewide bus tour.

And he's already winning:

Hackett (D) 44
DeWine (R) 36

Senator Mike DeWine is doomed.

I love Sherrod Brown, but if he gets into this race now, you have to wonder if his ego is winning out -- it would seem as though he doesn't want to run for the Senate seat but doesn't want anyone else running for it, either. [Read More]

From the article:

"Hackett was flying back Monday evening from Washington after meeting with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada, Woodruff said. Reid's spokeswoman, Tessa Hefen, would not confirm the meeting took place, but Woodruff later said Reid gave Hackett the confidence to run."

Yes. Thanks Harry!

Hackett may be behind in cash right now but I'm sure he'll hit the ground running like a rocket.

Look folks, lets remember that we have more than a year to the next elections. These premature predictions of Hackett over DeWine, Nelson over Harris, Casey over Santorum, etc is unnecessary. I wish the Dems look at every race as if they were down by 15 points.

Another thing that has been our Achilles' heel for a lot of close races is our poor showing with GOTV efforts. What are we doing to address the Repubs time-tested advantage in this area?

I just hope that Paul Hackett and Sherrod Brown can work it out so there isn't a contested primary.

Brown won't jump into a primary fight with Hackett.
