OH-02: Jean Schmidt Has $17,500 For November

Posted by James L.

Heh. This is pretty funny. I got an e-mail today pointing me toward Jean Schmidt's 2Q FEC filing. Evidently, ol' Jeanny had to unload a great deal of her warchest just to get under 48% of the vote in her spring primary challenge from former Congressman Bob McEwen. McEwen fell just under 4,000 votes shy of ending Schmidt's glamorous, combat veteran-insulting half-term career in Congress. Of $1.46m raised, she's reporting $17,509 as of June 30. $17,509.

Let me repeat that, just in case your eyes glazed over: $17,509. Cash. On. Hand. (And let's not forget that $277,000 debt that her campaign has accumulated.)

A full two months after her primary campaign elapsed and she has $17,509 in the bank? Brutal.

Now, Schmidt's Democratic opponent, Dr. Victoria Wulsin, is not going to win this seat with the cash that she's got, either: $24,564. But at least she has the temporary bragging rights of holding 50% CoH advantage. (Heh.)

This could prove to be another fun race, especially when coupled with Wulsin's latest internal polling. I have no doubt that the Republican extremist base and PAC backbone will help Schmidt out again and retire her campaign debt for her, but at least she doesn't face the advantage of having a $1m+ warchest to swamp her challenger with on the airwaves this summer.

We need to help Victoria Wulsin now! She's already got Hackett's endorsement and with a little extra cash she could make this a close race. Please consider funding Victoria Wulsin, I know I will. You can do it here:

As an OH-02 resident, I can tell you that we are THRILLED by the opportunity to turn this "reddest of red" districts into a nice shade of Democratic Blue. Whether or not you live in Ohio, Vic's leadership in Congress can benefit us all. Your support is needed and very much appreciated!

I have also set up an ActBlue page for Vic at www.noschmidt.com .

You know, I had a peek at Open Secrets' list of the most expensive races.
Most of the districts listed make some sort of sense.

But does anyone have a clue why Eric Cantor would have felt the need to spend $2 Million in Virginia-07 this cycle?
Is that race even on anyone's radar? What could he spend that kind of money *on* ?
Is he just spreading money on the waters as preparation to run for John Warner's
Senate seat in 2008? There's a rumor John Warner might retire.

I don't get it, either. You'd think if he wanted to run for Senate, he would keep a lot of that money as a potential warchest.

Wulsin's biggest liability is people don't know who she is- almost 50%. Schmidt's big problem is people DO know who she is and don't like her. It seems like what Wulsin has to do is work like crazy to make herself known.

Some have said the REAL race WAS the primary, based on the Democratic contender here in the second district. I hope this is NOT the case!

Cantor is Chief Deputy Whip. He's constantly referred to as a "rising star" within the GOP. One way to make sure your star rises even faster is to give lots of money to lots of colleagues - that's how Pelosi got so popular. So Cantor may be spreading the wealth around.

Per Cook Political Report 7/19, Ohio-02 (Schmidt) has been added to the republican competitive seats in the "Likely Republican" category bringing the total to 54 up from 53.

I wonder if Mean Jean's friend Danny Bopp (or Bubp, or whatever) has reached into his wallet as a tribute to their deep friendship?
