NH-02: Hodes Pulls In $343K, Sets Local Record and Pulls Even With Bass!

Posted by DavidNYC

James is doing yeoman working tracking all the fundraising numbers as they come in. But I had to take a quick break from studying to pass along SSP favorite Paul Hodes' official fundraising figures:

Paul Hodes Fundraising Numbers

2Q Raised: $343K
2Q Cash-on-Hand: $443K

Those are some pretty rock-solid nums. Hodes more than doubled his 1Q numbers, by a fat margin. It also brings his cycle-to-date total to over $604K. What's more, Hodes has already raised more from New Hampshirites than anyone else in NH-02 ever has - including Charlie Bass. Over half of Hodes' contributitions - $325K - have been from local sources, and we're still four months away from election day. Bass never even managed $300K from New Hampshire residents during an entire election period. Charlie's gonna have to rely heavily on PAC money to bail him out.

Hodes' burn rate looks pretty good, too. By my calculations, the campaign spent $132K this past quarter. (They ended the first quarter with $232K CoH, and raised $343K this quarter. That totals $575K. Subtract the current CoH - $443K - from that and you can see how much they spent.) Considering that the campaign's CoH went up $211K, that sounds pretty frugal to me. Hopefully these numbers will be enough to get Hodes added to the DCCC's Red-to-Blue list posthaste.

UPDATE (James L.): Wow. Check out Bass' 2Q numbers: only $200k raised and $450k CoH. Hodes is pulling even!

More 2Q Numbers:

According to the Houston Chronicle, Nick "Lampson raised $609,000 in the three months ending June 30. His campaign said he had raised $2.9 million since launching his campaign and has more than $2 million in cash on hand." http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/4043047.html

Also, from the Political Moneyline: "The Murtha For Congress Committee reported raising $621,367 from 4/27 through 6/30. The committee raised $173,418 from PACs and other committees, $427,149 from individuals, and $14,771 in interest. The committee spent $291,875 during the period and had cash on hand of $1,804,695 as of 6/30. The committee gave $15,000 to the DCCC, and $52,826 to others." http://www.tray.com/

Meanwhile in the Washington Senate race, Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell announced "Wednesday that she has raised more than $2 million in the last three months and heads into the fall campaign with more than $6.4 million. Her Republican opponent, Mike McGavick, said he raised about $1.7 million in the quarter and has $1 million cash on hand." http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/wire/sns ap washington senate,1,1804446.story?coll=sns ap politics headlines

All of these numbers are fantastic. And it’s great to see Murtha helping other Dems.

Hmm. Murtha has a whopping $1.8M CoH, is too old to run for a higher office, is unopposed this year, and is jockeying for a leadership spot in the Dem caucus. Particularly on the last point, you get to move up in Dem leadership circles (somewhat sadly) largely because you give money to other Dems.

On that front, $50K in this quarter doesn't seem like very much. Prior to this quarter, Murtha had only given some $20K to other candidates. (He's now given around $210K, this quarter included, to the DCCC, but that's just to fulfill his obligations. Remember, he's on the Appropriations cmte, so he has to give more.)

Murtha needs to think about spreading the love some more. It's not only the right thing to do, but it's in his interest if he wants to take Steny Hoyer's place. I realize that Murtha can only give $2,000 to each candidate. But he could max out to every single Dem running for national office and barely spend half a mil. Hell, he could start giving to local Dems and make a huge difference.

As far as McGavick, has he totally sworn off self-funding? Or has he given himself an escape clause?

WRT Hodes: Yay!

David, Murtha does have an opponent this year named Diana Irey. I'm not sure how good of a candidate she is, but I'm guessing Murtha's lurch leftward will nonetheless produce his smallest victory margin in many years. With a warchest like that, though, he can afford to share the wealth a little.

The Swingiest of Swing States. Still no love here for North Carolina.

Charles Taylor, of Russian mafia fame, is losing to Heath Shuler, of local high school, college, and pro football fame. Losing. Let me repeat that. Losing. As Stoller mentions on the front page over at MyDD today, Bush won the 11th with 57% of the vote.
The fundraising numbers aren't in yet, but last quarter Shuler ended up with a bushel of money onhand compared to the millionaire Taylor. And, have I mentioned he's winning?

That race alone will shift North Carolina from a Red Congressional State to a Blue Congressional state. But, that isn't the end of the story. Larry Kissell over in NC-08 is leading Robin Hayes, flip-floppin' Robin Hayes of CAFTA fame. With two wins, North Carolina will move into 2008 as the most likely "Swing State" in the nation. Gov. Easley term limited, Presidency on ballot, and hated Liddy Dole on ballot.

Swing on by to NC.

FL-9: Democratic candidate Phyllis Busansky raised $335k for Q2 bringing her CoH to almost $725k. Her likely opponent, Mike Bilirakis' son Gus, only raised $265k, plus he has a primary fight while Phyllis is running unopposed. Thus his CoH when the general election campaign begins won't be nearly as good as that of Phyllis.

Definitely a surprise seat that has a revived chance of going Blue this November, primarily because of the excellent Dem candidate.

Zack Space outraised Ney more than 2-1. $308k for Space; $123k for Ney.

It would be wonderful to have a really strong candidate ready to run against Liddy Dole when her term is up.

How's our bench, in that state? Anyone know?

We've been talking about this over at BlueNC.com. Mike Easley is being term-limited out and seems like a shoe-in against old Liddy. But, everyone and I mean everyone from the man on the street to our friends in the HALLS OF POWER seem to think he is going to fade away.

Given that, we have a couple good folks in the wings, but we don't know who will be running yet. Supposedly some inside poop will be delivered about rumors and gossip this week. Stay tuned.

A couple of things about the NH-02 numbers. As I note here, these numbers mean Bass has only spent around $50,000 this quarter. So he's apparently not paying much attention to the fact that he has a race on his hands.

As well, not only is Hodes immune to but Bass is now vulnerable to a charge Bass made against his 2002 opponent, Katrina Swett. In a debate, he said that "What she has is good campaign literature and a lot of money - most of which comes from out of New Hampshire." Hodes can't accuse Bass of having a lot of money, but the coming from out of New Hampshire part is still presumably as meaningful now as it was then.

Anyway, enough recapping of what I've said elsewhere.

How about we have Dean Smith pull a Tom Osbourne against Liddy Dole?

If Bill Friday was ten years younger I'd think he'd have a good chance as well. I assume Roy Cooper is planning on succeeding Easley?

This is going to be so much fun. I am blown away by Hodes' numbers and equally astounded at Bass' pitiful performance. Thank you DavidNYC, for getting the numbers early and for bringing a national spotlight to this winnable race.

For anyone reading the comments here, I've now accumulated a fair amount on Bass at The Yankee Doodler and Miss Laura is cranking out great stuff over at Blue Granite.

Michele Bachmann and Patty Wetterling released their latest filing reports today, showing Wetterling outraising Bachmann by a stunning two-to-one margin.

Michele Bachmann reports $310,610 raised, with $383,170 cash on hand. Of that money, $165,905 came from PACs.

Patty Wetterling reports $618,846 raised, with $562,286 cash on hand.

Minnesota's 6th Congressional District is the most conservative in the state and the fact that Wetterling raised twice that of Bachmann certainly shows that the Democrats are running a very viable campaign.

Murtha actually has a surprisingly strong opponent: Diana Irey is a county commissioner, the same position held by Mary Jo Kilroy and Phil Kellam, two of our strongest recruits. Her campaign, apparently, isn't going anywhere, but if I was Murtha I would not be taking the race for granted. http://www.irey.com/ to get a look at her.

From Irey's website: "While John Murtha is calling for an immediate withdrawal from the war against terror..."

Why are Republicans able to get away with lies like these?

Irey did raise $230K this quarter, not too shabby. But it would take a hell of a lot more than that to beat an entrenched incumbent in a D+5 district in an anti-GOP year.

Fundraising numbers for PA Senate race: Ricky - 3.6 million, Casey - 2.8 million

The figures in MN-06 are terrific. I know some people were worried that Wetterling had bested a more conservative primary opponent who might have been a better fit for the conservative district, but if money is still rolling into her campaign and it's not just the bankroll left over from her dropped Senate bid, this may be a pick-up after all.

I dote on these occasional races where a Republican gives up a lower office to run for a higher one, and the GOP loses both. This could be one such, and IA-01 another. Does anyone know if Bachman's seat in the state legislature is red-safe? A 3-seat domino loss would be something to celebrate...
