CT-Sen: Devious Timing

Posted by James L.

So egomaniac Joe Lieberman decides to gather petitions for his increasingly likely independent bid for Senate this November while the Swing State Project was on vacation.

Coincidence? I think not. I think he knows that People Power will destroy him.

(All kidding aside, I think Lieberman stands a good chance of being 2006's Jacob Javits if he loses the primary.)

Javits? I love it.

I'm glad someone sees it my way, that Lieberman and the Republican candidate will split each others vote and Lamont may come up the middle - especially in this Democratic state.

Well done.

The goal for Lamont is to get the Democrats to vote for him. If he succeeds at that, then he will certainly win.

Lieberman may have committed political suicide this week.

Javits? Oh god... now you are giving me bar exam nightmares three weeks early!

Or....

Joe and Lamont could split the vote and you know what...

I've heard the Javits comparison before, but I'm not sure who's supposed to be playing D'Amato in the scenario. Jackbourassa thinks you mean it's Lamont which would be the straightforward parallel, but one person I replied to elsewhere meant it to be Schlesinger.

Sorry, I should've made that clear: I think Lieberman's credibility will take a nosedive (hell, it already has), and he won't have half his usual strength. I think he'll end up fighting for votes with the Republican if Lamont plays this right (and so far, he's done everything perfectly).

Javits lost because he was out of touch with his party, which was trending more and more conservative. Lieberman will lose because he's out of touch with the rank-and-file progressives of his own party, who have learned that they're not gonna take it anymore.

At least, that's how I see it playing out. Perhaps you can call it optimism, but DavidNYC said the same thing to me after I told him that I thought that Tester would win the primary by 10 points. ;P

We need to make sure that Senator Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee get that message that they must support the winner of the Democratic primary or suffer lost contributions and credibility if they choose to ignore the wishes of the majority of the Democratic primary. They are really squirming and not answering the question on this one. At least, The Democratic National Committee has made that committment.
