CT-Sen: Lamont Is On the Ballot

Posted by DavidNYC

Looks like Nostradamus Lieberman was right: As of this moment, Tim Tagaris is reporting that Ned Lamont has the votes of 497 convention delegates, while Lieberman has 1014. Lamont only needed 15%, but he now has 33%, which is exacly in the range Lieberman predicted Lamont would get. Such powers of prognostication!

Of course, this means I was wrong, way wrong - but I'll gladly be wrong like this from now until November. So congrats to Ned Lamont and his entire team!

Why are you surprised at Lieberman's knowing the support he'd receive? His campaign probably contacted every delegate beforehand and pretty much found out who was and was not supporting him.

If the pre-contact story is true, why was Lieberman's party like a morgue after the convention? After all, if they knew what would happen, it couldn't be a big disappointment.

Well, I've read that he was contacting delegates in an attempt to get them to support him, which is why I suspect he actually did know.

Also, just because you pretty much know something bad's going to happen, doesn't mean you aren't extremely disappointed when it does happen. I can't think of a great example for that, but I can think of a good example for the opposite, that is, that just because you pretty much know something good's going to happen, doesn't mean you aren't elated when it does happen.

My example would be Tom Delay getting indicted. I fully expected him to get indicted eventually, but I was still literally jumping for joy when I heard Ronnie Earle had convinced the grand jury to do so.

Let's hope we can throw Lieberman's ass out of the U.S Senate.

Not being there among either camp, I wonder if the reported disappointment at the Lieberman party wasn't because their strategy/strategies backfired? It did seem strange that they were announcing in advance that Lamont would receive such a large number of votes. It did seem as if their intention was to inflate Lamont's numbers so that his real numbers would look like an underwhelming performance. We know that the Lieberman camp or parts of it tried to create local block rules at the last minute. And Joe was contacting delegates to ask for support. All these efforts failed. I suspect that the Lieberman camp actually had HOPES (not expectations based in reality) of a weaker Lamont finish. In addition, the machine-style, top-down structure of the CT party is weakening. If I was in their shoes, I'd be depressed.

Joe should tell me who'll win the Preakness.

Even if it costs us the majority in the U.S. Senate, Lieberman needs to lose or run as the republican that he is. I wish I was a Connecticut voter so I could vote against him.

NPR did a report this morning on the convention, but portrayed opposition to Lieberman as all about his support for the war. The media just doesn't get it. There are lots of Democrats who support the war, but they're not getting primary opponents. This is about Lieberman's support for Bush.

Well, it is about his unquestioning support for Bush on the war and other foreign policy issues.

He hasn't been supportive of Bush on really anything else that didn't receive significant support from a lot of other Democrats except on presidential nominations, and his voting record on nominations has been nearly identical to Russ Feingold's (it differed pretty only on the cloture vote on Alito (Lieberman YEA Feingold NAY), the vote on Gonzales (Lieberman YEA Feingold NAY) and on Stephen Johnson for EPA Administrator (Lieberman NAY Feingold YEA)).
