OH-02: 5 Days and 50,000 Doors

Posted by Bob Brigham

DFA to the rescue!

Next Tuesday, roughly 40,000 Ohioans will choose the next United States Representative for Ohio's 2nd District. Though this is a predominately Republican region—we have a real chance to elect the first Iraq War veteran to Congress and send Paul Hackett to Washington.

Can you help? We need to contact every single Democratic and Independent voter in this district between now and Tuesday. Face to face contact is the best way to persuade voters and make sure that they turn out on Election Day.

This is a tremendous opportunity and a critical first step toward taking back Congress in 2006. The special election will be Tuesday, August 2. This is an election we can win, but Paul needs your help to do it:

When: Saturday, 10:00 am
            Sunday, 2:00 pm

Where: 1523 Madison Rd

            Cincinnati, OH 45208

            (Behind the old Kerry HQ)

RSVP: hackett@democracyforamerica.com

Let's seize this opportunity to score a victory. If we win, it will send shockwaves across the political landscape. A win will show that Ohio voters are tired of the corruption and failed policies of the Republican Party—and will build the momentum we need to take back Congress in 2006.

And the ball bounces along.

I don't want to rain on everyone's parade. But honestly, what is a reasonable victory in this race? Considering the voting pattern on the OH-02 a win seems unlikely.

40% is a reasonable victory, remember we're playing against the spread, momentum is a matter of winning net points, not gross points.

More importantly, it isn't just about wins and loses, we need to evaluate ourselves daily, not just following the votes being counted.

Instead of focusing on winning, we need to focus on doing better, every day, in every district. In the end we'll win more that way.

I think a win would be reasonable, no?

Anyway, just because a win is unlikely does not mean we shouldn't work our asses off to get it. If the Republicans had that mentality, there would be a Democratic governor of Massachusetts, New York, California, and Connecticut.

As a wise man once said, "We have to show up if we're going to win." Paul Hackett is showing up like there ain't no tomorrow.

As an addendum, but perhaps even more important than winning on Tuesday, this lays the groundwork for Democrats to do well in a district where they are generally slaughtered, which happens to be in the mother of all swing states. Campaigning hard in OH-02 right now doesn't only give us a chance at picking off a House seat, but it strengthens the organization there for the 06 Senate race (Run Sherrod, Run!), 06 Governor's race, and the 08 Presidential race.
