NYC-Mayor: Bob Kerrey for Mayor of NYC???

Posted by Bob Brigham

AP:

NEW YORK - Former Sen. Bob Kerrey is considering entering the city's mayoral race, saying Mayor Michael Bloomberg has not fought Republican lawmakers who have hurt the city with tax cuts and reductions in national security funding.

"I am angry about the way New York City is being treated by Washington D.C.," Kerrey told The New York Times in Sunday editions. "Who is fighting these guys? What would Giuliani and Koch be doing now? They'd be raising hell!"

The 1992 Democratic presidential candidate, a former Nebraska senator and governor, said he would decide within a few days whether he will join the crowded Democratic field. He is now president of New School University.

Here is where it gets really interesting:

Aides to Bloomberg said they were surprised by Kerrey's comments since he accepted an offer to head "Democrats for Bloomberg." Kerrey said he began having second thoughts after accepting the offer.

It seems to me, every two years the trophy for the craziest mayoral races moves back and forth between SF and NYC. I think NYC has earned it back, but San Francisco will be striving to regain the title by this time 2007...

Big-time non-fan of Bob Kerrey here. I feel that he's said lots of things which undermine Democratic unity - he doesn't have the spine I look for in Democrats. And his whole pain caucus" crap is really just, well, crap.

There is something I don't quite trust about Democrats who were rejected by Democrats during the Presidential Primaries. Sometimes, such pols are inclined towards spending the rest of their lives complaining about the Democratic voters who didn't support them.

My prediction is that New Yorkers will have a good laugh watching this idea self-destruct during the coming days.

Yep, this is a non-starter. Besides, how utterly flaky is it to agree to head up "Democrats for Bloomberg" and then start bashing the guy? I mean, it's such a bizarre move that suggests a total absent-mindedness.

Furthermore, all any candidate has to do is run a doofy, jokey ad saying, "Bob Kerrey was tapped to head 'Democrats for Bloomberg.' Now he's running in the Democratic primary! Does he even know which side he's on?"

I agree, I think he's cracked. But my hope is that this is a sign that he's ready to join the team again instead of a sign that his ego is acting up.
