Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Posted by DavidNYC

The floor is yours.

P.S. If you come across any early fundraising reports, please let us know.

P.P.S. Surprise! North Korea detonates a nuclear device! Just as the media were in an all-out feedy frenzy over the House Republican cover-up of Mark Foley's predatory behavior, suddenly the ground shifts again towards nuclear proliferation issues. While this may aid the Republicans marginally in that it helps change the subject (for who knows how long) from the lose-lose Foley scandal to yet another discourse on scary people wanting to kill us. But really, I find it hard to see how this will be much of a net plus for the GOP. Did the failure to contain North Korea's nuclear program not happen under Bush's watch? Isn't this just another sign of Bush's weakness? (James L.)

Virginia Senate! Virginia Senate! Virginia Senate!

The latest poll shows Allen leading Webb by a statistically insignificant margin of 3 points (48% to 45%.) Think Webb can win this? I'm hoping he can-- I'm going to head down to Virginia on Election Day to help get out the vote!

Amazingly, bonehead rubber stamp Republican Mary Bono (CA-45) may be in trouble against challenger David Roth.

Gosh, David, it's hard to answer this question. See, all this time Larry Kissell has been the underdog - and I do love underdogs - I've been supporting him. But gee....with the latest independent poll showing him one point from tying Hayes...with Charlie Cook moving the district from solid Republican to likely Republican....with Hayes running negative attack ads and with Larry running, well, like the front-runner.....Maybe I should find another underdog to support.

Naaahhhh...not in a million years. I'm supporting Larry Kissell. This race has stunned Robin Hayes. He's gone negative two weeks before he ever goes negative and I don't remember him ever going negative first. It's wonderful being on the ground and seeing it unfold. There are groups out knocking on doors today and a lot of us getting on the phones. This has been a wonderful campaign to watch and now to be a part of. (I'm phoning!)

Joe Sestak (PA-07) has incredible momentum heading into the final month. He has more cash on hand than Weldon. The first independent poll of the SE Pennsylvania district shows him ahead of Weldon. President Clinton was just in the district campaigning with Joe. And... most important, Joe is Joe and Weldon is Weldon. Joe is going to be sworn in as a U.S. congressman in January. Today at 2PM (EST) he'll be the featured guest as Firedoglake where he'll be talking, in his very common sense, forthright manner, about the big issues facing a post-rubber stamp Congress. Come on over.

Preview is up at Down With Tyranny now.

This is amazing. I wrote yesterday about how Larry Kissell had announced he had $88.94 in CoH at the end of this reporting period. It was a very ballsy intentional move. They prepaid radio and television advertising. Robin Hayes is running scared and this was just a way of messing with him, I guess.

Well, people picked up on that and are donating $88.94 through ActBlue. I thought that was great when I heard it. That amount buys 10 radio spots in this market and two donations at that amount buys a television spot on the evening news. I know everyone is tapped out, but if you aren't and want to join in Larry can use it. It would be a shame to get this close....and well...you know.

ActBlue for Larry Kissell

I have probably been the least critical of Rahm Emanuel and the DCCC of anyone I know. But I have serious questions about how they are choosing to distribute resources. An example of this is PA-08 and PA-10. I think Carney in the 10th is a good candidate and will be a good congressman if he wins. But if he wins, he'll be at the top of the NRCC in 08 and will face a lot of competitive elections if he continues simply because of the nature of his district. On the other hand if Murphy wins in 08, he may face some competitive elections but the GOP will have significantly more difficulty winning that seat. Plus, an informed ballot poll I saw showed that if Murphy can get his message out he will win this race.

Ms. Sue Kelly in the NY-19.

It's come out (by looking at the congressional record) that Ms. Kelly was the Page Board Chair from Feb. 1999 and April 2001.

Alternatively many 'events' have come out about this time period and the many unethical and improper actions by Mark Foley and others under what should have been her watch.

We need to find the link between her and foley or some improper events with the pages, but we are getting there.

John Hall her challanger is also putting the pressure on her and is putting out Press Releases asking her to answer questions about the time she was Chair.

I'm doing some web work for Sharon Beery who is the democratic candidate for CA-22. She has a very very tough fight but in light of the situation, anything could happen, I'm asking for suggestions as to how I could use the internet to put some life in her campaign.

She is running to replace Bill Thomas, a Republican from Bakersfield, California, Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means Committee.

She is running against Kevin McCarthy, Republican Leader of the California State Assemblyman,

I'm looking at my district FL-15 just north of Foleys district. My Congressman Dave Weldon is in big trouble do to his affiliation with Jack Abramoff and his never ending conservative rants. Democrat Bob Bowman a Combat veteran is taking him on this year and things are looking good i've seen several Bowman signs but no Weldon signs I think we can take this seat if we can get Bowmans message out. If you can contribute or volunteer for Mr. Bowman I beg of you to do so he can use all the help we can give him. http://bowman2006.com/

I'm watching Linda Stender (NJ-07) whose battling three-term social conservative Republican Mike Ferguson.

This is the only competitive House race in Jersey.

60% of the district considers themselves independent. Bush's approval in the district is right now in the 30s. Bush won by 54% of the vote '04, Ferguson with 57%.

She is a second wave Red to Blue and a seat that with the current climate, which favors women, she can pick up.

I'm also watching Stender in the NJ 7 for much the same reasons as Octane.

She can win this.

Is it too late to form a 527?

Here in Louisville, our media are showing ads for 4 major contests: KY - 02, 03 & 04 as well at IN 09. I'd love to see ads bashing the do nothing congress for failures and advising voters to vote out the incumbants.

As a side note, Anne Nortup (R - KY 03) is so ashamed of her 10 years in congress, for the first time, her ads identify her as "Candidate for congress" not congresswoman.

Am curious about the Iowa Governor's race. I am hearing plenty of the close Iowa House races, but CULVER v. NUSSLE seems to have fallen of the radar screen somehow. Anyone?

And an aside: the Minn-6th race: Republican Michelle BRACHMAN showed her ideological blinders at a recent question & answer. She denied the science behind global warming after a long disjointed ramble about how scientists have wobbled between global cooling vs. global warming over the past 30 years. The audience audibly groaned and booed her after her ridiculous response. Cross your fingers that Democrat Patty WETTERLING is able to keep this rabid social conservative science denying ideologue out of the House.
