Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

Posted by James L.

Bumped.

Sorry for the slowness today. I've been tying up some loose ends for the weekend, but I'll try to have some stuff up later tonight. In the meantime, have at it here. This was the week of a million polls, including tons that I didn't post here (although if you want to track the daily goings-on on the Senatorial side of things, do check out the revamped Electoral-Vote.com). Have there been any stories that have fallen through the cracks? What's going on in your neck of the woods?

In site-related news, DavidNYC will be back from his honeymoon on Sunday(-ish), so you can probably expect to see him back in full force with both guns blazing on the 25th. (This is my attempt to goad him into posting a lot so I can go back to my studies. Wink.)

ahaha!

As I do in every nearly related thread I post about my local race -- the NY-19th!

Some rather intresting stories came out this week:
Sue Kelly has apparently aligned herself (and is taking campaign money from) the payday lending companies. They are illegal in the state of NY.
Press Release by take19 here: http://www.take19.org/pressreleases/sept_21_2006.html

Another Story tells that Hall's internal polls show him pretty close to incumbent Sue Kelly:
http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060921/NEWS/609210316
After the pollster prompted the public with a brief description of the candidates -- Hall took the lead. (showing that a generic dem. candidate even with no personality has a close race with kelly and that when the dem is given a personallity he would beat her)

Ohio's first is a great race that hasn't been getting as much attention as it could from the blogosphere. This is our best chance to pick up the seat since Steve Chabot was first elected.

Radio talk show host, labor union advocate, man-of-the-people Tony Trupiano, is facing mama's boy rubber stamp Thaddeus McCotter in suburban Detroit (MI-11) in November. Today Tony is the Blue America live featured guest at Firedoglake at 2 PM (EST). Preview is up now at Down With Tyranny.

I agree.... OH-1 NEEDS to be blue again.

Steve Chabot is one of the worst of the Bush cronies... and now he's facing the toughest challenge of his career. Cook places this race as a toss up, internal polls show 45%/45% race, mdDD has it as a toss up....

We need the blogosphere. Desperately....

Not only the Democrats need you, Cincinnati needs you. We can't take two more years of Steve Chabot. Who knows, we may never have this great of a chance to unseat him again.

One good reason to help John Cranley is that Steve Chabot was one of the pro-torture Republicans involved in the recent replay of the idiotic "lemon chicken" statements about prisoner abuse.

Jesus Christ, there are horse-races all over the place, and I hate gambling.

the latest Pollster.Com poll shows Claire at 46% and Talent at 47%, with a +/- of 1%.

A few days ago, it was reported that Claire was leading by three percentage points in another poll.

Talent has been Running Scared (credit my cousin, a Lakota Sioux, for tagging him with the Indian name) for some time, and it is getting obvious.

First he took forever to decide where he stands on the Stem Cell Initiative that is before Missouri voters this November. (He was waiting to be told where he stands by the RNC, in other words.)

While talent is going from church to church with Alan Keyes, Claire needs to hit him in the values. He voted for the war, and he sits on the Armed Services Committee, but at last count, he had missed 65 of 95 meetings of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Farmers and other rural voters will not be appreciative of this fact, if it is made known. I don't know how many farmers and rural residents are reading Fired Up! Missouri! and Blue Girl, Red State to find this out. We are the only two sources I know of that keep repeating this fact, hoping someone will listen, and that the issue will gain some traction.

Claire needs all the help she can get, including from out of state.

Across the state line, Nancy Boyda is giving the ethically challenged Jim Ryun a run for his money in the Kansas 2nd (Jim Slattery's old district) with a strong grass-roots campaign and no help from the DCCC.

Also in Kansas, the Paul Morrison and Phill Kline race is running a statistical dead-heat.

Those are the three races and the ballot initiative I am watching.

New Poll in NV-02!

This is a very Republican district, it's practically everything in Nevada except Clark County. This district has never elected a Democrat since it was created in 1982. It's an open seat this year. This is the new Mason Dixon poll published today in the conservative Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Jill Derby (D) 42%
Dean Heller (R) 45%
MoE 5%

Jill Derby leads among women by 6 points and she's polling stronger among Democrats than Heller is among Republicans. She's only down by 4 among independents.

Hi Everybody --

Haven't posted in a bit (been overwhelmed with work stuff). Things here in Indiana are progressing well, and I don't see anything really fundamentally changing going into the election -- we're going to have three very close Congressional elections.

On a different note, I was reminded of something important as I was downtown yesterday and stopped in the voter registration office, since I have recently moved. I would encourage everyone to remind people about things such as registration deadlines -- here in Indiana, you have to be registered at least 29 days before an election (so not too many shopping days left -- especially if you live in the 2nd, 8th, or 9th district!). We all know people (friends, family members, co-workers) who think like us and would vote like us, but don't live this stuff 24/7 like most of us do -- and might forget to do something like register. Nothing can motivate people like a friendly reminder from someone close to them!!
