Speaking Engagement

Posted by DavidNYC

Tonight, I'm doing my first bit of public speaking since my Dean campaign days - I'm talking at a Kerry house party-style fundraiser at Cafe St. Bart's here in NYC. Naturally, I'm going to talk about swing state activism. (I'm billed right after former New York City Public Advocate and one-time Senate and Mayoral candidate Mark Green - cool!) I'm off right now, so wish me luck!

The November 28, 2003 arrest of Nuradin Abdi in Ohio is just now making national news. This should help "swing" Ohio back to the Bush side.

Nuradin Abdi isn't exactly a household name - not quite on par with Osama or Saddam or even Zawahiri. I don't think the election in Ohio is going to stand or fall on this one (old) arrest.

What's the rationale here? Voters who are becoming disenchanted with the state of the economy, the morass in Iraq and the general incompetence and malfeasance of the Bush administration read that one terrorist has been arrested, and all of a sudden all of their concerns are put to one side? They leap to their feet in a burst of patriotic fever and decide that they'll vote for Bush?

Geez, the capture of Saddam Hussein, a pretty big deal compared to this, was only enough to bump up Bush's approval ratings for a small amount for a brief moment, whatever makes you think this incident is going to reverse the tide for Bush?

I suspect that this is wishful thinking (and spin) more than anything else.
