VT Gov: Douglas not running for re-election

According to multiple sources, VT Gov. Jim Douglas won’t be running for re-election.

I don’t think a whole lot of people saw this coming, as I haven’t seen anyone speculate on this possibility. Not being from Vermont, I don’t know who could be his replacement. Hopefully some natives can enlighten me and others about who the potential candidates could be.

  1. After the good news in AK-AL its good to get more good news today.  This will help us stay close to 25-25 in Governorships and not slip too much if the Republicans have a good year there.

  2. It’s a very welcome development. Douglas must really have had some bad internals if he’s bailing now. The guy’s been in state government literally his entire adult life, and obviously doesn’t want that career to end in a humiliating loss to a rare competent Vermont Democrat, which is what he’ll almost certainly be facing.

There are no other Republicans of Douglas’ stature left in Vermont. The GOP Lite Guv, Dubie, is super popular for some reason (you see more Dubie stickers around than Douglas stickers, even in liberal areas), but he’s also a commercial airline pilot and won’t quit his day job. The others are all too old, too far to the right, or both. The only Gooper I can think of having a shot is State Senator Diane Snelling, daughter of the former governor, who is very popular in super-liberal Chittenden County and has the name-rec, but I’m not sure she’d be interested.

I don’t trust the war between the State Dems and the State Progs not to bugger this up for us somehow, but this means that tentatively the next governor of Vermont will be either Racine or Markowitz, either of whom is a damn sight better than Governor Scissorhands.
