SSP Daily Digest: 8/11 (Morning Edition)

  • IL-Sen: Crain's Chicago Business is reporting that a teabaggish libertarian, Michael Labno, appears to have survived challenges to his petitions and will likely appear on the ballot this fall. Presumably this is good news for Alexi Giannoulias.
  • NV-Sen: Who knew he was even gone? Sketchball and possibly ersatz teabagger Scott Ashjian had apparently been AWOL for some time, but Jon Ralston has been keeping tabs. The erstwhile Ashjian put out his first press release in however long yesterday, to remind the world that he exists. It also serves the remind the world that he does not know how to use spell check.
  • AR-01: GOPer Rick Crawford just caught a break: conservative indie candidate Richard Walden just dropped out of the race and threw his backing to the Republican.
  • IN-09: Another similar story to the AR-01 item above: Indie Ron Kimsey has bailed on the race, in order to help Republican Todd Young beat Rep. Baron Hill.
  • NM-02: In one of the first independent expenditures aimed at the general election, Defenders of Wildlife plunked down $125,000 for a two-week buy to air an ad against GOP retread Steve Pearce. Big problem, though: The Pearce campaign put out a press release saying they got KOAT-TV to take down the ad on the grounds that it was false and misleading. Really hate to see a Dem ally stumble out of the gate like this.
  • NY-14: Talk about chutzpah: Reshma Saujani baselessly attacked Carolyn Maloney for the fact that the 9/11 healthcare bill failed to pass, carping that "A real leader would have passed this bill years ago." Not only did this bill fail purely due to Republican obstructionism, I'd like to know where Saujani was lobbying on this legislation "years ago." Fortunately, the attack has generated some swift blowback: the president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association says he supports Maloney's efforts, and the head of the NY AFL-CIO said Saujani's charges were "absolutely ridiculous." Now, the chief of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association (a different outfit) has also chimed in, slamming Saujani for her "disingenuous and offensive" attacks.
  • PA-15: Say what you will about Bill Clinton, but the man is touring America like a fuggin' champ on behalf of Democratic candidates this year. In addition to stumping on behalf of Joe Sestak yesterday, Clinton stopped by the Lehigh Valley to help Dem John Callahan raise $150K for his race against GOP incumbent Charlie Dent. (JL)
  • WV-01: Politico reports that the AFL-CIO is threatening to remain neutral in this race, rather than back Dem Mike Oliverio, who hasn't exactly compiled a very pro-labor record. (Indeed, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers endorsed his Republican opponent, David McKinley.) It could of course all be a ploy to extract promises out of Oliverio. (If so, good.) In any event, the AFL will decide on an endorsement this weekend.

None of the links work for some reason :(
also that NM-02 is weird...if ads can be taken down for being false and misleading, I don't think we'd even have much political advertising...

    I see that
    Well the PA-15 link works

When you get the error, look in your IE address bar.  Remove the "www.swingstateproject.com/diary/7362/" from the address, hit enter, and I think the links will work just fine.

    Clinton
Also did an event for Dan Onorato in Philadelphia last night.

He deserves a tremendous amount of credit
I know a lot of people, myself included, were nervous about what President Clinton was going to do and not do after Hillary lost the nomination -- but he's been nothing but a fantastic team player for the Democratic Party.

    [ Parent ]
    And a perfect partner
Clinton's negatives will only improve over time, and as such, he might be a safer appearance option than Obama in certain districts.

Obama still will do well in urban areas, in spite of what mkost think.  I personally think its smart if he stays on the sidelines in a lot of places until mid-October to avoid given the GOP the photo op to show our candidates with Obama, especially where Obama is unpopular.

Clinton on the other hand can go pretty much anywhere and everywhere right now and really doesn't present any sort of negatives.  And he balances the party out, as Clinton is certainly a better choice in rural and white districts, and not necessarily a bad choice in ubran areas while Obama stays back a little bit.

Come late October though, I want Obama making th bum's rush just about everywhere, as I don't think he's as toxic as most seem to think he is.  Urban areas especially he can still drive votes I think.

    [ Parent ]
Obama will do what he's asked to do.
If candidates ask him, I'm sure he'll come out swinging.  However, if Congressional Dems make the mistake of urging him to stay on the sidelines, then blame shouldn't fall on BO for the Nov losses.

I get annoyed when pundits, bloggers and Dems think everything is a zero-sum game where Obama is pulling strings like Geppetto.  He really doesn't have too much say in the campaigning decisions.  If Congress wants him to campaign he's almost is forced to do it.  It's a quid pro quo for support of his agenda.  If they ask him to stay out, then that's what he does.  Obama didn't have a choice in supporting Blanche Lincoln, but if someone is politically tone-deaf it's all just one damned conspiracy.

    [ Parent ]
He ignored Jim Martin's requests for help
that was different because it was during his honeymoon period but still.

I think it was in the Audacity to Win
(Could have been Game Change, I read them back to back), Plouffe says Obama really considered Hillary and probably would have picked her but the Bill factor was too much.  Save the three-somes for the bedroom, not the Oval office.

Makes me think it would not have been much of a factor at all, as Bill could have just been the campaign and messaging arm of the WH, and there is no one better for that in the Democratic Party, period.

    [ Parent ]
She's a better SoS than she would have been VP
Not that I think much of Biden, or the VP role in general for that matter.  She would probably have been wasted there, and I'm not sure if she would have enjoyed it much either.

But I think Hillary has actually been quite good as SoS.  Sure our foreign profile was bound to improve somewhat when Bush left office, especially in Europe, but she is probably my favorite Cabinet pick not only due to my political leanings but also in keeping things from getting unpleasant in our diplomatic endeavors.

And while Obama would never do this, there are scenarios where 2012 is so bad Biden could have "health problems" and Hillary could be named VP to help out in a place like PA, OH, WV and some others.

    [ Parent ]
I totally forgot to make that point
I disagree with you in that I think Hillary could have been a much better person to have around for going on the offense/defense for our critical issues.  Nobody wants to listen to Biden, but Hillary could have been front and center on every major policy issue to a degree where her face is on the front page of msnbcdotcom or cnndotcom.  She certainly could have helped us through the pitfalls of HCR.

And when our policies finally look good, we'll look good.

    [ Parent ]
    Agreed
I won't slam Biden so heartily, but I think the positions are flip-flopped from where they should be.  Biden's foreign policy mind and credentials are impeccable and he was the only one to propose the bold and, no doubt, unpopular (to many conventional analysts) idea of splitting Iraq into devolved communities.  While I see less need now, I actually thought the plan had serious merit.

    I
think Biden is a fairly good VP. I think he is a good advisor to the President and he takes on the burdens of VP in a good manor. However I think he would have made a much better SoS. He is made for it. I like Clinton but to be honest I would rather see her in the Senate than VP. She is good as SoS but I think Biden would have been better. For VP I was rooting for a dark horse Chet Edwards. Mark my words, had we chosen him we would have won Texas. We were actually not that far off and I think he could have won it for him. I also think he would have done better with moderates who thought Obama was too liberal. Biden was the practical choice and I do not blame him. At least he did not pick Bayh, although perhaps Bayh would have given JLT cottails, but I doubt it would be enough.

    NY-14
I'm really at a loss as to what Ms. Saujani is getting at.  It'd be a great talking point of Maloney ha drepeatedly voted something like this down.  And I have no idea when Maloney became the "leader" of the NY delegation.

Saujani just sounds ignorant of how thinks work.  She is certainly making herself 0 friends with this campaign and poor tactics like this.   Silly way to throw away ones potential career.

    She's a political novice
She's way down in the polls and has to lob as much as she can towards Maloney, and hope something sticks. This race was over months ago, and Saujani is just trying her best to look ultra-outsider-liberal for her next job application.

    But this isn't the way
It'd be one thing if she were complaining about wanting changes to HCR that are more liberal in view.  In this instance (in the article), she seems to make weird assertions and just seems...ignorant.  Being a novice is one thing, seeming like you're a goofball who understands nothing is completely different.

    [ Parent ]
    Yes but...
This all would only have helped keep their names in the news.  If they were civil during numerous recounts, it could have hurt Barnes.

I was hoping they'd go at it like cats and dogs, but oh well.

Let the campaign begin in earnest.

    [ Parent ]
I'm surprised Handel conceded so quickly.
I guess the pressure was immense for to to not continue the intra-party feud any longer.

Nonetheless I think Barnes will have a field day with Deal's ethical problems from when he was in Congress.

    [ Parent ]
    I actually wonder
What the single deciding issue will be.  There is so much going on that could be the issue, but seeing its Georgira I wonder if it ends up beign a culture thing like the 2002 flag debacle.

If the issue is immigration, Barnes actually staked a decent position for the GE already, so he won't get caught off guard there.  Aside from the flag and the D next to his name, I never got the feeling Barnes was insanely out of touch with Georgia culturally.

I don't know if the ethics will stick.  With 2 Dem congresspersons under investigation for ethics, it will be easy for Deal to counter that Dems (even if not necessarily Barnes) are corrupt.

    [ Parent ]
Now that I think about it, it's an easy decision on Handel's part
Handel gets to run again in 4 years if Barnes quits (or is term-limited out, I don't know) and is remembered for her graciousness.

    [ Parent ]
Barnes and Deals are actually friends
So I'm not sure if the campaign will get that nasty. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

    [ Parent ]
    Where did you hear that?
    I hadn't heard that before.

    [ Parent ]
    well...
my girlfriend's father is a high level Georgia Dem operative and family friends with Barnes. She told me that Barnes and Deal might be reluctant to attack each other because they are friends. But this is politics, so...who knows.

Ben Quayle, we hardly knew you
As is being reported in several places, the former Vice President's son's campaign for Congress in Arizona has pretty much crashed and burned, as it's come out that he was one of the original founders of "The Dirty" -- I guess a Phoenix area site that follows the skankier side of the club scene, making crude, sexual comments about women -- seems like a more PG13/R rated version of "Girls Gone Wild."  The best part -- he wrote under the name Brock Landers (google "Boogie Nights" if you don't remember the reference!).

To make matters worse for him, he's doing exactly what every politican in trouble should not do: First denying everything, then saying "Well, I knew the guy," then saying "I might have had something to do with it at the start a long time ago when it was something different," etc., etc.

The founder of the website is pissed, saying, among other things, that it's fine if Ben doesn't remember doing this, but then saying "I guess I don't remember the time you banged Tim-Marie (a chick) in my spare bedroom."

The part of me that still has the sense of humor of a 14 year old finds this very amusing!!!!

Reminds me of Bush Jr. when he first ran for Congress...
...and lost, of course. Before he was born again, he was a bit of a drinker and philanderer. He lost in large part because of revelations that he was an out-of-touch carpetbagging spoiled brat. Quayle seems to be going the same route.

It's also worth noting that Quayle seems to be going hard right to salvage any chance of winning. He recently came out with an ad claiming that Obama is the worst president in history and is responsible for the infiltration of Mexican drug cartels, among other laughable accusations.

I don't think Scott Ashjian is a Reid plant
Planting a conservative proxy in the race to split the vote sounds like the sort of thing that Reid might do, sure, but I suspect that he would've chosen somebody who isn't a complete joke.

    Of course
After the Georgia runoff the main thing the media talks about is that this is BAD news for Democrats. Is it no wonder this is going to be a Republican year? It's been the constant media memo since February 2009, and its been constantly promoted whether accurate or not.

But perhaps the big story in the Handel-Deal runoff was Tuesday's turnout. More than half a million Republicans - nearly quadruple the average turnout for an off-year election - came to polls to vote in temperatures hitting the high 90s.

That number is likely to put Democrats across America on notice that they'll face an invigorated GOP base in the general election on Nov. 2.

Lazy journalism for one. They don't even bother to check what percentage this turnout amounts, and then compare that to other states with close, high-profile, important primaries in say, 2006 or 2002, to see if its really even that high, and then they don't bother to qualify that this could just be a unique situation due to the competitiveness of it.

    Who wrote that shit?
Please tell me a GA media outlet so I never have to encounter them because, well, it's one thing to compare primary turn-out between the two parties to say something about the turn-out in November (very faulty) but to extrapolate one parties turn-out to mean something about the whole country, that's a whole other ball game of stupidity.

Sloppy sloppy sloppy....  Im improperly-employed, hire me!  I'll make sure you dont write stupid political things!  (Improperly-employed is where you've got a job but you are settling because of the economy, and fuck I am settling like no other.  I'm so ready to Jet Blue it.)

    LA-Sen Poll, LA-02 Dem debate
I posted these yesterday, but the thread was kind dead by then.
    LA-02 Dem debate
Darth Jeff, you said you wanted me to post this:
    Part I http://www.wdsu.com/video/2458...
    Part II http://www.wdsu.com/video/2458...
    Part III http://www.wdsu.com/video/2458...
    Part IV http://www.wdsu.com/video/2458...
    Some backgroud on the candidates:
Juan LaFonta and Cedric Richmond: State Reps
Gary Johnson: former congressional aide, focusing only on young African Americans
Eugene Green: former Bill Jefferson Chief of Staff
I learned something from watching that debate, that House committee that controls redistricting has 11 Republicans, 5 Dems, and 1 ind.

Vitter leads, Traylor polling at some dude level, Jindal very popular
The SMOR poll is out in LA:
    Vitter leads Melancon 46-28
    Vitter leads Traylor 78-4
Jindal has a 70-27% approval rating.
For those who care, the Lt. Gov race:
    SoS Jay Dardenne 26
Country music singer Sammy Kershaw 15
St. Tammany Parish Pres Kevin Davis: 6
    LAGOP chair Roger Villere: 2
I don't see those numbers holding up. I'm expecting a Dardenne-Villere run-off. Villere has the organization and fundraising ability (John McCain and Newt Gingrich are holding fundraisers for him), and Dardenne has a huge cash advantage over everyone, with over 800k. Dardenne and Davis are considered the moderates, with Villere winning the support of the Tea Party crowd. Davis even endorsed Landrieu in 2008. I know one person I won't be voting for...

    http://www.bayoubuzz.com/buzz/...

I have a bit of a hard time buying this
I don't doubt Jindal's popularity (and Obama's lack of it), and that Vitter is ahead.  But do you really think Traylor is only polling 3.9% against Vitter, in a climate where we've even seen popular incumbents losing 15-20% of the vote to "some guy" in primaries.  Even among conservative Republicans (i.e. people like yourself!) enough are fed up with Vitter to say they'd support a Republican opponent.  I've got to think that Seymour Butts would poll at least in the teens against him -- and maybe get Vitter's support (hee hee hee)!

    [ Parent ]
    In LA
The anti-incumbent mood isn't as strong as everywhere else. Here, its anti-Obama, which helps Vitter. Vitter is very well known for taking on Obama, and his radio ads make sure you know that. I believe this poll, becuase it is also very similar to an NRSC internal, showing Vitter leading Traylor 76-5. Traylor is only known in North LA, where there are not many registered Republicans and Republicans have a closed primary. Vitter is a former Rep from the 1st district, which has the largest concentration of registered Republicans in the state.

    [ Parent ]
    OK then
You're stuck with the representation you want!!  Of course I want Melancon to win, but short of that, I would really have loved to see a credible Republican (i.e., not a hooker-banging, woman-beater protecting, birther) take a serious primary run at this slimeball.

    [ Parent ]

    Good Luck!!!
I hope I do not sound too corny but I can honestly say that I think that many people on this blog will be very prominent in politics. I mean fifteen and sixteen year olds being this knowledgeable is amazing. I really do think so. There are probably some Charlie Cooks and I will go on a limb and guess a few people here will get elected to public office.

I predict that for the election of 2016
One of the chief strategists for one of the major party candidates for President will cite his experiences on SSP....

Maybe that's a bit much, but I could actually see some of the people here as campaign managers for winning House/Senate/Gov candidates in a few years.

    That could be
a fun open thread topic, where we see some members going.

    I agree
I'm sure we will have quite a few strategists come from here, and a few elected officials. Look for me to be NRSC Chairman in about 15 years, after I run to succeed Cassidy when he is elected to the Senate, defeating Landrieu. Or, hopefully Roger Villere is elected Lt. Gov this year, as he's in his 60's and could retire in 2015, and I could get my dream job as Lt. Gov! But first, I have to get elected to something. If I wasn't moving to New Orleans in a few years, I'd love to run for state Senate in 2011, against the Dem incumbent.

After I move to Arizona in a year or so
I and a few friends plan to campaign for Harry Mitchell. And I might run for a state legislative seat in the area. Tempe is a nice city.

    Well
I have been considering moving to Arizona for a bit to get myself back on a solid financial footing before returning home to California.

    Is endorsing Landrieu a
cardinal sin or something? She, more so than Jindal or Vitter, (though they were in the majority party at the time), got money to Katrina devastated communities. There's a reason why she got 40% in St. Tammany and won Tangiopha and Washington Parishes. And also won Jefferson Parish.

    Ask HossierDem
About my feelings for Mary Landrieu. He knows very well how I feel about her. Many people here do.

    [ Parent ]
    I probably do too
Republicans seem to hate her inordinately, it really blows my mind. I mean Democrats don't spew that kind of rancor at, say, Mike Castle, or Lincoln Chaffee.

    Yes
He hates Landrieu. Personally I think she is a fairly good and competent legislator but I think we can agree to disagree.

    Just like you
With Daniels. I love him, you hate him because he's from your state. I hate Landrieu, you like her, because she's from my state.

    CT was pro-incumbent last night
I know they use a convention system (pretty sure), but there's only one possible defeat, where the 16-year inc. Dem leads the son of a famous local politician by three votes. That's 169 incumbent legislators and only one of them is currently in primary danger.
