NY-SD-13 Special Election (Update: Peralta Wins)

by: DavidNYC

Tue Mar 16, 2010 at 10:01 PM EDT

Sorry for not putting up a thread earlier. In tonight's special election for the state Senate in Queens, it looks like Dem Jose Peralta is crushing disgraced ex-Sen. Hiram Monserrate (now running as an independent) 60-33 with a quarter of precincts reporting.

UPDATE (James): Looking for Colorado caucus results? Democrats have a nice spreadsheet of results, while Republicans are actually forcing you to download an Excel file to see their state of affairs. The Colorado Springs Gazette and the Denver Post are also liveblogging the caucuses.

UPDATE (J): With 56 of 158 precincts in, Peralta leads Monserrate by 61-33.

CONCESSION UPDATE (J): Monserrate has conceded the race. Woo-hoo!

UPDATE: So far, Romanoff leads Bennet by 904-704 in the precinct caucus count.

UPDATE: Romanoff now has a 4764-3248 edge on Bennet after a big win in the Denver precincts.

Well
-1 for honest politics in NY, but at least, +1 for marriage equality.

Problem is, even if some miracle happens where Avella beats Padavan and Nunes beats Huntley, where are those additional 5 votes coming from?

Don't understand your math
Booting Monserrate was just about the only good thing the Senate's done in ages!

Peralta
I think he is saying the Peralta has his own ethical issues.  That being said I can't imagine anyone being worse than Monserrate.

Yes, that's right
Sorry, I made it a bit unclear. It's not that I wanted Monserrate to win (I agree that he is 10 times worse than Peralta), but Peralta is no saint himself. That being said, if I lived in this district I would most certainly be voting for him as the lesser of two evils (honestly, in a district like this, the Republicans may as well not run a candidate, so it's between Monserrate and Peralta).

Better a crook than a crook & a thug...
As the NY Daily News pointed out in there editorial today  Peralta directed more than $500,000 in taxpayer money to a nonprofit organization that had never filed federal tax records, had no employees and had been inactive for more than two years.

But I guess stealing government money by creating fictious charities to ripoff is the norm in NY Politcs (see Brian McLaughlin, Larry Seabrook, Hiram Monserrate, Joe Bruno, Efrain Gonzalez, Pedro Espanda, Miguel Martinez, Carmen Arroyo, Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Anthony Seminerio, Gregory Meeks, Malcolm Smith and many more).

Nice to see beating your girlfriend is where NY voters draw the line. Hiram had to go. Glad he lost. Hopefully the attention drawn to him will lead someone (paging AG Andrew Cuomo)to look into newly elected Senator Peralta's shady dealings.

It's probably going to take a remapping
That's the goal next year: hold enough seats to draw a Senate map with a safe Democratic margin.

We should have been able to pass it sooner. . .

Colorado caucus also being liveblogged

As for this district: not surprised, but still relieved.  Though it is sad thousands of people still voted for Monserrate.

Pretty strong performance by Bennet so far
I don't want to read too much into this, but Bennet's doing surprisingly well so far: Romanoff was expected to win but as of now Bennet's ahead.

Romanoff ahead now
51%-42%-7% uncommitted.

About how much of a win does Romanoff need to benefit from this?
If it stays around 51%-42% I'd imagine it would be spun as a goodnight for Romanoff.  If it ends up a narrow Romanoff win I'd guess it would be a disappointment for him.  About how well was Romanoff expected to do?

The perception
seems to be that this is make or break for Romanoff because he does not have the $$$ to tackle Bennet head-to-head without Joementum from the caucus.  I'm not sure that the margin matters as much as getting the win.

34, WM, Democrat, FL-11

[ Parent ]
Since a Romanoff win seemed to be expected I thought he'd have some expectations to meet
If final numbers are in this range I'd guess Romanoff will go to bed happy tonight.  Should give him his needed boost.

The margin held
at 51%-42%-7% as of this morning.  Yes, I imagine Romanoff is happy with it.  He lives to fight another day.

Colorado
I haven't been paying attention to the Colorado Senate Race at all.  Is Bennet being challenged from the left or from the right?  Or is it over a issue?  The perception of a weak incumbency?  Too much for me to pay attention to! lol

Also was the State Senate Seat in New York a Dem Pick Up or a Dem Hold?

NY-Sen = Dem hold
CO - challenged from the . . . "It should have been me." Although, it appears Bennett is tacking more to the left than Romanoff. Not by a large amount but that letter he sent out on the public option is a good example of where he's going as well as being pro-EFCA, Romanoff said he'd be a no. He came in as an empty suit but is maturing nicely.

Heh
I think you nailed it vis-a-vis CO. But when did Bennet say he was pro-EFCA? Was that for reals, or "everything but card check"?

[ Parent ]
Romanoff misquoted
He's said personally in a Denver Young Dems forum that he too is pro-EFCA.  He has also come out for Single Payer.  To me, and, yes I am a Romanoff delegate, though not a staffer, this is a race about a weather-vane Senator who first opposed things like the public option and now is leading on it and is the last to the party when everyone else has decided.  Colorado needs a better leader than Bennet.

IIRC, Romanoff was challenging from the right.
I seem to remember reading a front page diary here expressing some disappointment in that fact.

Very close race for GOP Senate
According to the Colorado GOP's Twitter feed (I couldn't wade through their site to get the exel) with 48% in Norton has 36%, Buck 35%, Wiens 18%.

21, male, CA-15 (home and voting there), LA-2 (college)

75% in, Norton with small lead
Norton 38%, Buck 34%, Wiens 18%.  Meanwhile McInnis having no problem- he's beating some guy Maes 62%-38%.

Was the Senate GOP caucus expected to be close?  I've heard a lot of grumblings about how Norton was chosen, but was she expected to have this close of a race here?

21, male, CA-15 (home and voting there), LA-2 (college)

[ Parent ]
Norton is the Washington candidate
There are a lot of Colorado Republicans who are unhappy with Norton being anointed by the DC establishment (and remember, it's the hardcore party faithful that go to these things). It's unclear whether there's enough resentment to give Buck an upset in the primary, though.

Up next the Hiram Monserrate for Assembly campaign.....
With Peralta's Assembly seat now vacant how long before Hiram Monserrate announces his campaign for State Assembly?

Sad thing is he might actually win the Assembly seat.
