IA-03: Former college wrestling coach will challenge Boswell (2nd update: Zaun is also in)

Most election forecasters put Iowa's third Congressional district in the "safe Democratic" or "likely Democratic" category, but Republicans in this state have vowed to run hard against seven-term incumbent Leonard Boswell.

The mystery "top-rate" Republican recruit for this race emerged today.

desmoinesdem :: IA-03: Former college wrestling coach will challenge Boswell (2nd update: Zaun is also in)
According to The Iowa Republican blog, former Iowa State University wrestling coach Jim Gibbons will file papers with the Federal Election Commission today to run in IA-03.

At Ames High School, he won three state titles. At Iowa State University, he was a three-time All-American and won a national championship during his junior year.

When his collegiate wrestling career was over, then-ISU coach Dr. Harold Nichols, offered Gibbons a job as an assistant coach. When Nichols retired in 1986, Gibbons was named head coach. He coached seven individual NCAA champions while compiling a 96-32-1 career coaching mark. After winning the NCAA Championships in 1987, Gibbons was named national coach of the year. He was named Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991 and retired from coaching after the 1992 season.

Since leaving coaching, Gibbons has been a financial advisor, most recently with Wells Fargo Advisors in West Des Moines. He also serves as a television commentator, providing color commentary for ESPN, The Big Ten Network, and Iowa Public Television. In 2003, he was named broadcaster of the year by the National Wrestling Media Association.

Gibbons says he is retiring from Wells Fargo to run for Congress full-time. He opposed the federal stimulus package and Democratic bills on health care reform and climate change.

I'm guessing that this means State Senator Brad Zaun and former Iowa GOP chairman Mike Mahaffey will not seek the Republican nomination to challenge Boswell. Gibbons can probably raise a decent amount of money and may even be able to self-fund his campaign. The National Republican Congressional Committee is unlikely to invest a lot of money in this district in my opinion.

College wrestling is a popular sport in Iowa, but I still don't see Boswell as a likely casualty next year. If unemployment keeps rising, though, who knows? Any comments about this or other House races are welcome in this thread.

UPDATE: Bleeding Heartland user mirage, who is a Republican, doesn't think much of Gibbons and believes Zaun would be a much stronger candidate. Zaun was mayor of Urbandale, a heavily Republican suburb of Des Moines, before winning a seat in the Iowa Senate in 2004.

SECOND UPDATE: I was wrong about Zaun, who told CQ Politics today that he plans to run against Boswell. Zaun said he will formally announce his candidacy sometime after December 1.

Zaun was just re-elected to the Iowa Senate in 2008, so he won't have to give up his seat in the upper chamber if he loses the GOP primary or the general election.

CQ Politics suggested that with Gibbons and Zaun in the race, it may change its rating on this district from "safe Democratic." I tend to agree with the statement that Gabby Adler of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent to CQ Politics:

"Each year Republicans claim they have Congressman Boswell in their sights, and each year they never live up to their own hype - there is no reason to believe this time will be any different," Adler said.

What puzzles me is why so many Republicans are seeking this position. Even if a Republican beats Boswell, he is likely to be thrown into a 2012 primary against Tom Latham in a redrawn IA-03. Few people would choose a freshman over a nine-term incumbent with a seat on the House Appropriations Committee.

THIRD UPDATE: CQ Politics changed its rating on IA-03 from "Safe Democratic" to "Democrat favored" because Gibbons and Zaun are joining this race.

NOVEMBER 25 UPDATE: Zaun has filed FEC paperwork for this race and revamped his website.

Not seeing him as a casualty either, but
You think we can have the good people of the state of Nevada vote in this election?

Still plenty of time before the filing deadline
March 19, 2009.

As a Cyclone fan myself (as my handle reveals), I must say...
...there's a small part of me that dies when a former Cyclone I liked AS A CYCLONE shows up as an active Republican.

But that doesn't mean I'm surprised, either.  A majority of white male jocks are Republicans, it's just the way it is.

Gibbons, for you trivia fans, was the last ISU wrestling coach to win a national title, back in the late 80s, and the over-20-year drought is a big deal for us as wrestling is a sport where Iowa State is a longtime national power no less than Duke in men's basketball or Notre Dame in football.  Gibbons also was a national champion ISU wrestler in his college days.  And Jim's younger brother Joe also was a national title winner wrestling for the Cyclones.

Anyway, there's no doubt Jim Gibbons brings much higher name recognition than anyone else the GOP could field, and I imagine that name rec plus his professional background provide nice platforms for good fundraising.  For those reasons, Boswell has to take this challenge very seriously.

That said, Gibbons has never run for public office, nor has he ever been appointed to anything, so we have no idea whether he has any real political sense as a candidate.  People like him can pan out well or bomb and disappoint his supporters.  We just won't know until he wages an actual campaign.

Yes
It always disgusts me when I hear about NFL quarterbacks being pushed to run for office - almost always for the GOP.  The only exception I can think of is Heath Shuler.  Then again he was horrendous in the NFL.

[ Parent ]
Yes
But he's about the best we can hope for in that district.

[ Parent ]
No he's not.
Obama got 47% there.  We can get better than that.

And he's corrupt too!
And he's corrupt too! (The TVA land deals stink to high hell)

But don't mind me I just hated him so much on the Redskins that I can't get myself to forgive.

Yeah, but Brady Quinn is still hot ...
... even if he is a homophobic Republican, Notre Dame product, and shitty NFL qb.

[ Parent ]
Huh?
What had Quinn said controversial?  I keep up with the NFL but this is the first I've heard of it.

[ Parent ]
It was a couple of years ago ...
... a gay man/group of gay people accused Quinn and a group of his friends of verbally harassing them outside of a Columbus (or Cleveland -- can't remember) club on New Years Eve.  So is he necessarily homophobic, no (and maybe I should be more careful with that!) but he did publicly endorse McCain and other Republicans, and went to Notre Dame, so I'm prepared to believe the worst.  And he's still uber-hot!

[ Parent ]
As is his sister
When he played for ND I remember the camera panning over to her in the stands for prolonged periods of time.  I believe she married an Ohio St. player of all people.

[ Parent ]
That's a true statement
Laura Quinn married Ohio State linebacker AJ Hawk, who now plays for the Green Bay Packers.

I remember the 2006 Fiesta Bowl between Notre Dame and Ohio State, and they kept panning to her in the crowd, they must have done it about 200 times.  If memory serves she had on this jersey that was cut down the middle, one half Brady Quinn's ND blue and gold, and the other half AJ Hawk's OSU scarlet and gray.

I don't recall the incident between Brady and the group of gays at the club, but I do remember him campaigning for McCain.  McCain and Palin came to my hometown of Strongsville for an appearance at our rec center, and Quinn (and Browns teammate Joe Thomas) came out to speak prior to the main event.  I was at this appearance live, and wasn't thrilled to see that our players were stumpind for McCain/Palin.  The hilarious thing was, not even a week later, Sarah Palin showed up for an appearance in Bowling Green, where I was going to school.  She even brought out the infamous Joe Wurzelbacher, who was from Holland, about 20 miles northwest of Bowling Green.  But, the happy ending was that while she came out on 10/28, just six days before the election, Joe Biden came out to BG just three days later, on 10/31.  I got to spend Halloween on the campus green with the freaking Vice President.  Cha-ching!

(In the end, Wood County, where BG is, voted 53%-46% for Obama, and Cuyahoga County, where Strongsville is, voted 69%-31% for Obama.  Scoreboard.)

I'm sure Boswell is taking it seriously
and he's still in the Frontline program. If he gets into trouble the DCCC will help.

Iowa Democrats gained a lot of new registrants in Polk County before the 2008 caucuses and will be working GOTV very hard here. They'll need to if Culver is going to have any chance.

[ Parent ]
Do you have a sense yet ...
... if this guy is a more center/right or reasonable conservative, or more of a wingnut?

[ Parent ]
I know zero about him
I assume he's to the right on social issues, though, because The Iowa Republican speaks favorably of him.

[ Parent ]
A Wells Fargo Guy?
Dunno if that is the most appealing guy for many voters.

I'm sure most people know him
as a wrestling guy, and that is the angle he'll play up.

[ Parent ]
half the people in Des Moines
work at Wells Fargo (The other half work at Principal Financial Group).  Won't be a problem.

The problem I see (as an IA-3 resident) is that I never heard of the guy, and I consider myself at least a moderate sports fan.  As such, I don't see Gibbons as an A-list celebrity recruit like this is being spun.  In terms of Iowa wrestling coaches, Gibbons is no Dan Gable.

[ Parent ]
what do you think of Zaun
as an opponent? He has a lot of campaign experience at least.

[ Parent ]
better
definitely solid second-tier challenger, at least. I would like to know if he actually wins the Des Moines portion of his Senate district or just rolls up his margin in the suburbs. He could win if there is a GOP wave (which I doubt, but you never know).

[ Parent ]
Fair point, but the Gibbons name is well-known...
...among central Iowa sports fans who are middle-aged and up.  And "middle-aged and up" describes the overwhelming majority of midterm voters.

One thing that hurts Gibbons a little is that Story County isn't in the district.  Iowa State still is firmly in the Des Moines media market, so plenty of IA-03 voters know Gibbons' name, and it might not matter.  But Gibbons would have been helped had, by chance, Story County been part of the district, as he might have enough popularity locally to keep the margins down in what is a Democratic home county.

Ultimately voters don't care about Gibbons' wrestling career, it helps only for name recognition.  But that's always a big part of the battle for a challenger.

My thoughts
I have to disagree with desmoinesdem about Heath Shuler.  I'll be honest with you though, I don't care for my own Rep Dave "lapdog on every issue" Loebsack even though I may vote for him this time around given how loony Chris Reed is and he will probably be the GOP nominee.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Leonard Boswell who's voting record best represents Ipwa.  I also like Bruce Braley because he is a wonderful speaker and a rising star that doesn't put you to sleep on the stump like Loebsack does.

CQ Politics Rating Change
For whatever it's worth, CQ politics has changed its rating of this contest, because of the Republicans who've entered the race:

The 2010 campaigns of Republicans Brad Zaun, a state senator and former suburban mayor, and Jim Gibbons , a financial adviser who previously coached the wrestling team at Iowa State University, have prompted CQ Politics to change the rating of the race in Iowa's 3rd district from Safe Democratic to the more competitive classification of Democrat Favored.
