FL-Sen: Rubio May Switch to AG Race

by: DavidNYC

No fun:

Two Republican sources said today that even as former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio campaigns for retiring GOP Sen. Mel Martinez's Senate seat, he has been calling around to top Republican donors and activists in the state to discuss the idea of switching from the Senate primary against GOP Gov. Charlie Crist and into the open-seat race for attorney general, where a serious Republican candidate has yet to emerge.

Rubio has issued a bunch of weird, jokey non-denials on Twitter. It would suck if he dropped out, but I wouldn't be surprised if he started bailin' like Palin.

(Hat tip: Taegan)

UPDATE: Some more claims by various media outlets that Rubio is "denying" his interest in the AG spot, but the only thing his camp has said is that "Speaker Rubio is an active candidate for U.S. Senate" and "He is squarely focused on winning this campaign for Senate." Those are not denials.

Hmmm...
That would serious harm our chances at the Senate seat. We need Crist to have to move to the right and get his hands dirty.

Because our FL-Sen chances are so good otherwise?
No way. Crist is cruising and will continue to do so; he probably won't win a Mark Warner-like 64-36 landslide, but it'll be an easy victory.

The FL-Gov race, on the other hand, is our best shot since 1998.

True. But if we had a shot, it was
with Rubio and the closed universe of GOP primary voters pushing him in a direction he wouldn't want to go in.

But yeah, the governor's race is where it's at.

Crist could do anything and it wouldn't matter
We have zero chance against Crist.  We had a small chance againt Rubio.

The main thing here was money being spent that would not go against Sink, and the likelihood that Rubio would drive Crist left, not right.

If Rubio's out, this race is not worth discussing.

Scared off by his fundraising no doubt
Oh well, we are back to Crist not being a particularly bad guy. It certainly frees him to be his own man.

If he does bail on the Senate race
At least that would make the heads of the wingnuts at Redstate spin around and pop off -- and that's always fun to watch!

Enjoy some spin from me
Even if this is true, and Crist ends up winning both his party's nomination and the general election, Crist is an improvement over Martinez.  Heck, Crist might join a small coalition of moderate GOP senators (probably could count on one hand) and help us out on some key votes.

I'm not disappointed with the Florida race.  Sure, I'd like to have the GOP on defense, but their love affair with Crist will be worth some yucks at a later date.

Yucks as in...
laughs or yucks as in expressions of disgust? It could go either way.

expressions of disgust (eom)

I agree 100%
I dont mind not picking up the Florida race so much as its an approvement, we've got our hands full with several other races, and I am anticipating and am really excited to read the Redstate blog post about Rubio dropping out for the AG race.

Although, now that I think about it, it will be zero Rubio stabbed us in the back and is just an opportunist politician and all screw the NRSC and Crist and the GOP establishment.  I spose the spite-factor is a lot less lower and is why Im sad but I spose their response will probably be only more damaging to the national GOP.

don't write it off yet
i still say that if unemployment hits 12%+ in florida crist will take a hit.

being normal is for the mediocre.
