OH-Sen: Portman Will Run

by: James L.

Wed Jan 14, 2009 at 4:27 AM EST

Little Bobby Portman wants to make good:

Rob Portman will run for the U.S. Senate in 2010, the former Cincinnati congressman told The Enquirer.

"I've made up my mind. I really think that our state is in such deep economic trouble right now, and our country has so many challenges that it's time to step forward," Portman said in a phone interview.

Portman, 53, of Terrace Park, said he will make a formal announcement of his candidacy at an 11 a.m. event at the Golden Lamb in Lebanon. He'll then depart on a two-day campaign announcement tour through the state with stops in Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus and ending back in Cincinnati with an event at the Montgomery Inn on Thursday.

I'm really looking forward to watching the DSCC do their thing against this Bush lackey. Still, I have to wonder if any of the other potential candidates (Ken Blackwell, state Auditor Mary Taylor, and Mike DeWine) will make it a contested GOP primary. Let's hope so!

Well, He's Starting Early
Which I guess for Portman is a good strategy, Ohio's a pretty big state with many media markets and so many various constituencies, he needs to begin early to establish his image before he can let either primary or partisan opponents tarnish it. But from what I've heard about his career background, it's pretty tarnished as it is. Case in point:

"I've made up my mind. I really think that our state is in such deep economic trouble right now, and our country has so many challenges that it's time to step forward,"

Yeah, Rob. Your state's in such deep doo-doo right now, and it's somewhat because you were OMB Director under Bush, remember? Who was in charge of fiscal policy under the administration that shipped all those Ohio jobs overseas? YOU WERE!

I'm pretty certain Tim Ryan would end up being the Democratic nominee. As for any Republican challengers, I doubt any of the major ones you mentioned. Maybe some minor state legislator or some other guy would give it a go, but they won't get the nod.

GOP Could Win 3 Key Senate Seats?
I find this article's somewhat misleading, because it gives the assumption that the GOP in 2010 would be capable of picking up new seats, which is what I assumed. But they were really just referring to Ohio, Missouri and Florida, which they currently hold anyway. So they won't be really "new" seats taken from Democrats.

Another thing, Politico needs to get its facts straight. Case in point:

...the party's uphill 2006 election victories of Sen. Susan Collins in Maine and Reps. Dave Reichert of Washington, Erik Paulsen of Minnesota and Leonard Lance of New Jersey in highly competitive House districts.

2006? That's 2008, numbnuts!

And I loved that line to describe Rob Portman from the DSCC:

Rob Portman? The architect of the Bush economy?

Sounds like Karl Rove's not the only architect that Bush knows.

A "big" 2010 for Repubs =
Treading water! Ha ha :)

And of course during the last two cycles when Dems did so well the likes of Bouchard, Steele, Mark Kennedy, Kean, Ricketts, McGavick, Schaffer, John Kennedy, Pearce, Wilson and Zimmer were all reasonable GOP recruits that could have won in other years.

Ehh... I dunno abotu some of those
Zimmer, McGavick, Ricketts, Bouchard and Pearce I just can't see winning those races even in a neutral year.

[ Parent ]
Maybe not neutral but with a Repub headwind definitely
I'm thinking 1994 obviously but more recently people like Peter Fitzgerald, Norm Coleman, Richard Burr, Mel Martinez, even Jim Bunning.

[ Parent ]
As a New Mexico resident
Heather Wilson would've made a reasonable candidate, but Steve Pearce is and was a nut-job who would've gotten his butt kicked by double digits every year, even in a good year for the Republicans.

Your go-to source for great sarcasm

[ Parent ]
Ah, Politico...
Yet another example of the stunningly shoddy journalism that goes on at that outfit.  They are, at best, the National Enquirer of American politics.

[ Parent ]
It's a good line from Chucky's boy

[ Parent ]
...and speaking of pricks named Bobby, Bright voted against S-CHIP today.
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/200...

Didn't someone say this was one of the things he'd be with us on?

He probably would have had he won by more than less than 1%

[ Parent ]
No excuse when 40 Repubs voted for it
Why didn't he just go with the GOP when they tried to get him?

[ Parent ]
Even Boren voted for this bill
If Boren votes for it and you don't you are most definatly a DINO.

[ Parent ]
I'd like to see how the legislative session develops.
Yeah, kind of sh***y of Bright to vote against the bill.  We'll see where it goes.  He's probably thinking of running against government spending in "excess" and talk about how he voted against the party, how he voted against unnecessary spending and building a repetoire now on bills that will pass easily rather than hard bills later.

[ Parent ]
Ya, I can understand some throw away votes
None of the three major pieces of legislation were close in the voting outcome.  All three passed with >240 votes in favor.  Lets wait and see how he does if and when he's needed in the tight votes.

[ Parent ]
If he won't vote the party-line on easy votes with significant GOP cover
What makes you think he'll help when even some liberal Dems have bolted? Now he is entilted to vote however he wants but what I can't understand is if he is going to vote like a Republican why he didn't just run as a Republican when he had every opportunity to do that with little if any downside? Fact is he would have won much easier than he did. Very odd.

[ Parent ]
Again
What I said earlier was he has to look at something and ask, "Will my district see this as reasonable or excess spending?" So he can run on the economy in 2010 no matter what state it is in.  You kind of ignored that in your response to Chad's post.

[ Parent ]
I understand that
Totally. Just can't see his votes improving any time soon. Time will tell if its part of a grand strategy to become entrenched. Hopefully so.

[ Parent ]
I wonder if the cigarette tax
was the problem for Bright.

Liberty Avenue Politics - a place for politics in Southern Queens

[ Parent ]
And Griffith was the other
I know these first few bills are passing easily, but there is no need for these people to vote against them.  How the heck is insurance for poor kids and fair pay bills in any way unpopular even in a conservative district?

Oh ya, one of the AYE votes - Cao (LA).  HAHA Freepers!

[ Parent ]
My bad
I stand corrected.

[ Parent ]
What a waste of money he was

[ Parent ]
Yeah I agree
I can see if this was a touchy issue like Defense, but this bill was S-CHIP. Something that goes to help children. Shit even Walt Minnick of Idaho voted for this bill and he's probally one of the most valunerble of the whole caucus (next to Bright and Frank Kratovil, who voted for S-CHIP).

[ Parent ]
He is an asshole.
Though I always expected him to be pretty awful, so I can't say that his early shitty voting record surprises me.

[ Parent ]
SenateGuru sweeps the cake on this one in his newest post... H/T
Former Senator Mike DeWine (R) is making calls to see if he has the support to run.  State Auditor Mary Taylor (R) is considering.  Former OH-Attorney General Jim Petro is considering.

Attorney General Richard Cordray (D) says he's out, and so does Mayor Coleman (D).
