MO-Sen: Emerson Won't Run

by: James L.

Fri Jan 09, 2009 at 2:19 PM EST

Strike one off the list:

Missouri Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R) will not run for Senate in 2010, her office confirmed Friday morning. Sen. Kit Bond (R-Mo.) announced Thursday that he is retiring from the Senate after four terms.

Emerson spokesman Jeffrey Connor said the Congresswoman was content to stay in the House with her new post as the ranking member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government.

Sounds good
She probably would have been one of their better candidates.  I'd much rather face Talent than Emerson.

Exactly
She's pretty moderate by Republican standards, and could have appealed to the centrist suburbanites Dems need to win in a state like Missouri.  Plus, her district most likely would have elected a more conservative representative to take her place (and it's a district we're not going to win).

actually looking at
past elections, most of the rural counties that dem win or do best in are in the south eastern tier of the state; the area she represents.

Agreed
We may have had an outside chance at her House seat (Clinton won the district I believe), but I would much rather have another Democratic Senator than another Democratic House member, especially considering the Senator will have a little more leeway to be more progressive than the House member.

People complain about New York...
...but with names like Emerson, Talent, and Carnahan looks like you need a little nepotism to be considered a candidate in Missouri.

Good!
She would have been very formidable. She's pretty moderate by Missouri Republican standards and would be way tougher than someone like Talent.

I'm a Ralph Yarborough Democrat
