MN-06: Tinklenberg Raises Nearly $500K in 24 Hours, DCCC to Enter Race

The phrase "game changer" is without a doubt a pretty overused term in politics, but this turn of events undoubtedly qualifies as one:

24 hours ago, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann announced that all those who disagree with her are "Anti-American."  Since then, the outpouring of support for my campaign has been extraordinary.  Since Congresswoman Bachmann's outrageous remarks, my campaign has raised $438,346.57, and we're working to reach $500,000 by 5 p.m. today.

In an update to that post, the Tinklenberg campaign confirms that they've bumped up that tally to $488K -- and at the rate they've been raising over at Actblue (they started off at just $3K before Bachmann unleashed her inner crazy), they almost certainly met their goal.

On top of all this, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will indeed be going up on the air in support of Tinklenberg shortly (SSP sources). It looks like things are shifting fast in this race -- Bachmann isn't even hitting 50% in her own internals.

Public Opinion Strategies (likely voters, 10/12-13):

El Tinklenberg (D): 33
Michele Bachmann (R-inc): 44
Bob Anderson (IP): 8
(MoE: ±4.9%)

The Kissy Monster is indeed standing on shaky ground. Another poll conducted around the same time by Grove Insight had Bachmann leading by only 42-38.

$500k should be enough
to run a real TV campaign for a couple of weeks.

Watch out!

HER MSNBC COMMENTS
I AM DEEPLY APPAULED BY THE COMMENTS MADE BY CONGRESSWOMAN BACHMANN AND HER VIEWS OF "ANTI-AMERICANISM" AS A NEW CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES I AM PROUD AND HONORED TO SALUTE TO AN AMERICA THAT UNITES AND NOT DIVIDES OUR NATION. HER EXTREME CYNICAL VIEWS OF THE LIBERAL OR DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAVE TRULY EXPRESSED THE "FEAR-MONGERING" THAT THE REPUBLICAN BASE HAS LIVED BY. I DEMAND THAT SHE BE CENSURED FOR HER IGNORANT VIEWS OF WHAT A TRUE AMERICA IS.

[ Parent ]
What are you talking about?
Who is this "she" who made those comments?  And please lay off the caps lock.

[ Parent ]
Caps lock no, correct
All CAPS, no. But the proper antecedent to the pronoun "she" is "Congresswoman Bachman" in the second line of his comment.

[ Parent ]
Dear Michele,
You fucked up.  You're about to learn that when the Netroots, grassroots, and the Democratic party apparatus get together, it can be very potent.  May you pay with your career.

Love,

The Democratic Party and its allies.

Bachmann's republican primary challenger
Has filed to run as a write-in candidate in the general election as a protest against Bachmann's extremist statements.

Wow
That's actually sounds like a pretty cool guy.

[ Parent ]
Compared to Bachmann
Almost any other republican sounds awesome.

[ Parent ]
He was a prof of mine in college!
So cool....that I didn't know he was a Republican!  Very moderate guy!

[ Parent ]
Pretty different from the DCCC poll
I Just Diaried This Minutes Ago On Daily Kos....
....with demographic details handicapping Tinklenberg's chances.

What does Sen Inhofe need to say?
... to raise half a million for Andrew Rice?

Just asking ... Not to detract from Tinklenberg, who deserves the help. But others deserve some big time help too.

Arent's his idiotic comments
Limited mostly to bizarre rants on global warming?

[ Parent ]
Since He's In Oklahoma....
it's very hard to imagine anything Inhofe could say that would offensive enough to defeat him.  Just ask Brad Carson.

[ Parent ]
Uhhhh?
I'm not in Minnesota or Oklahoma, are you? So why should the home state of Inhofe or Bachmann determine how much stuff we tolerate out of their mouths and when we are moved to contribute to their opponents? I want to smite them both, not only the one in the liberal state.

[ Parent ]
The point is
An agregious comment / rant in Minnesota might not be very agregious in Oklahoma.  Part of what drove the blogosphere to get involved is the fact that Tinklenberg has a chance in hell.

Self-fulfilling prognostications
We would have some chance of winning in Oklahoma if we poured a million bucks into the race. Tinklenberg had about $400,000 CoH and he's raised $600,000 in 48 hours. Nice money for one House seat. And about two weeks of heavy rotation advertising on stations in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. But forget it, we don't have a chance in hell down there, even in a Democratic wave year.

Sadly, we are held back by these self-fulfilling prognostications.

Your candidate doesn't have "a chance in hell" so we here at the DCCC or O2B or SEIU or whatever won't even waste $50,000 to actually test the waters with polling, TV/cable ads, whathaveyou. And so you will see, we were right, your candidate doesn't have a chance in hell without our help!

OK, granted, this year the DSCC has been much more willing to test the waters, I'll give that to Chuck Schumer. Jim Martin and Kay Hagan would not be viable today if he'd listened to some who urged the Democrats to write off the South because we don't have a chance in hell of winning there. And even the D-trip has been a bit more aggressive. Still, when the cheering and tumult stops, by the weekend of Nov. 7-8-9, we will be looking at the "Carol Shea-Porter/Larry Kissell" races of 2008 and saying, "Damn, s/he did have a chance to win it, and we blew it by being so timid and so blind."

[ Parent ]
And I'd say we better at least try to flip OK-Sen
partly because Inhofe is probably the most evil sitting senator, and partly because Andrew Rice in a D-leaning year is one of our best shots at unseating Inhofe!

If I were a Repunlican ina potentially tough seat
I would be a little nicer than Bchman. Heck, Vern Ehlers and Fred Upton of Michigan have always been nice and they have safe districts.

This race is
Competitive only because of Bachman. She's a lot like Mean Jean, in a seat that shouldn't be competitive but because they are crazy they have more competitive races than they should.

[ Parent ]
What about Marilyn Musgrave?
Heh.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
What's with Mean Jean?
She's been uncharacteristically sane lately.  Too bad.  We can usually depend on her to say something monumentally stupid to give us a good shot at her seat.

[ Parent ]
i've been feeling bad about both mn-6 and mn-2
we have great, underfunded candidates, but i didn't see how they could pull off a win against the GOP incumbents.  finally one of bachmann's crazy idiot comments is said at the perfect time and "Wheeeeeee!" she's sliding down a shit mountain very fast.

and she looks as crazy and drunk on koolaid as any politician i've ever seen.  maybe i'll go and doorknock in washington county.

What's been the reaction in Minnesota?
I know all of us on blue blogs are fired up about this, but what about the people in her district?

Yeah
I'd be curious to know what, if any, reactions Michelle's constituents have or have had about her Hardball appearance.

[ Parent ]
the Minnesota reaction youbetcha
I happen to have the misfortune to live in Bachman's district.  She is every bit as extreme as Palin and got one church in Brooklyn Park in trouble with the IRS partly for mixing in politics.

Yesterday the Minneapolis Star Tribune got in the act.  There were hundreds of replies to the report, my rough guess about 7-1 in favor of NOT returning her to Congress (with other stuff thrown in).  The approval rate on those posts I put at about 10-1, vice versa for the posts that gave Bachman a thumbs up.

She got in there in the first place because these are largely white, upper-middle class suburbs who value church IMO.  The ethnic mix here is changing and with this crisis, who is upper-middle class anymore?

[ Parent ]
Making a Record.
This has been a costly election cycle in its relationship to our household financial resources.  But even though our financial resources are spent, my wife and I each just sent money to Tinklenberg.  To us, that money was not about an election.  To us, sending that money was the most unambiguous thing we could think of to do to make a clear record of our opposition to Bachmann's remarks and this new McCarthyism/Bachmannism.

What's something else that Bachmann disagrees with?
Well, at least we know that about 40% of her constituents are anti-American.
