MO-09: Who Among Us Does Not Love NASCAR?

by: James L.

Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 1:44 PM EDT

Not Judy Baker! She sure loves her some NASCAR:

It's official: Carl Edwards is Columbia's native son.

A billboard unveiled this week along eastbound Interstate 70 near Range Line Street brags that Columbia is the home of the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series winner.

About a hundred friends and family yesterday surprised the 28-year-old NASCAR star with a reception, showed off the billboard and also announced plans to rename a stretch of Route WW after Columbia's biggest celebrity. [...]

State Sen. Chuck Graham and state Rep. Judy Baker announced the plans to designate Route WW from Highway 63 to Olivet Road as "Carl Edwards Drive." (emphasis added)

Which makes this deranged explosion from her opponent's campaign in response to new poll results showing her leading Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer (which we noted below) look even more psychotic:

"Judy Baker's poll is like a NASCAR driver bragging about being ahead after the first lap of this weekend's Sharpie 500, which in case Judy didn't know is a car race enjoyed by 'those people' often derided by liberal Democrats like herself," said Luetkemeyer spokesman Paul Sloca in a statement.

Nice try. Keep on truckin', little buddy.

Whoa,
Nicely done Baker, nicely done.

Waffle House celebrated its 50th anniversary and my steak celebrated its 25th-Larry the Cable Guy

Add this to the poll
Luetkemeyer bloodied up by CfG and not self funding any more plus the DCCC's million in ads and I think we've got a fantastic chance of picking up this seat.

I rate this as Lean Republican.

I rate this
In my words as Tilt Democrat.

Just for the record...
I've lived in Daytona Beach my whole life and hate NASCAR.  Or course, that doesn't mean I have a problem with people who do like it.

i don't like NASCAR
or the Olympics, but i loves me my NFL and Major League baseball!  But I'm glad Judy Baker properly loves and respects Carl Edwards (who i assume is a NASCAR driver).

I kinda like NASCAR but I could live without it,
I could also live without NFL and MLB, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the NBA. It is nice to see Baker having respect for Carl Edwards.

Heh, I just don't watch sports much at all.
The sports I might watch most are the Olympics, and even then I generally only watch some of the more rarely-broadcasted sports, like soccer, court volleyball, speed-skating, etc..

I tend to watch
Basketball, Football, some Hockey, and some Baseball.

The Olympics has a lot of garbage sports
I can't believe that they are scraping baseball and softball after the 2008 games, yet keeping complete garbage "sports" like badmitton and field hockey.

As far as the Olympics goes I enjoy watching Basketball, Swimming, Beach Volleyball and Track and Field.

One thing that always makes me scratch my head is when they refer to the athletes as amateurs.  Sorry, but an amateur is someone who doesn't play for money.  All U.S. olympians get paid, as do most from other countries.

Hey! Those aren't garbage sports!
I love badminton!  And how is field hockey not a sport, if hockey is a sport?

If I had to call some sports garbage sports, car racing and golf would probably top that list, to be honest.  Car racing involves a set of bodily controls similar to those involved in competitive videogaming...which, if you're in places like South Korea, is in fact considered a sport.  Now golf is pretty much purely an accuracy sport, with little physical exertion--well, I haven't played real golf (only mini-golf, heh), but I don't hear about them body-building or stuff.  I would assume they could train to get the perfect shot, but it seems to vary according to external factors (such as course features) enough that you can't train for that they way you can train for Olympic diving, for example.  So, I'm not really sure what golfers train, other than visual assessment and arm-motion perfection, and apart from the latter it seems like basically a sit-down activity.

Disagree about golf
While what you say maybe was true many years ago, Tiger Woods has revolutionized the sport, and he has a training program much more similar to tennis or basketball players than to what golfers used to be, and he's pushed the rest of the PGA in that direction.  You're not going to be able to hit the ball as far and straight as guys like he can without being in great shape.

[ Parent ]
Oh well then.
You're probably more right than I am because I haven't actually been paying any attention to the sport.

I know it has ...
... an upper-crust, stodgy, Republican image, but it really is fun to play.  And you can drink and smoke while you're doing it (which I guess sort-of shoots my "it's a real sport" argument down, doesn't it!!).

[ Parent ]
heh
I've heard that beer pong is now a considered a sport among some.

Just wait
One day we will have somethign along the lines of a videogames olympics.  Mark my words, it will happen.  Heck, one NC family let their 16 year old drop out of school to take up playing Guitar Hero profrssionally.  Sad but true.

Um...
professional StarCraft, anyone?

I guess you are right, they are sports
Well, technically at least.  I've always been impressed with the insane eye coordination and timing of those Asian table tennis players.

But seriously, badminton?  I've never even known a person who has known a person who ever played that.  Is that one of those sports that died out back in the 50's or something?

[ Parent ]
Heh...
Growing up, I used to have a badminton net in my backyard. I played so much that my older brother and I basically killed the lawn over the course of two summers.

No more badminton net after that.

This I cannot understand
Maybe it's just because I'm not American, but I can't get excited about baseball or American football.

American football is a reasonably fun game to play, but it would be vastly improved if they didn't stop every time the ball hit the floor and ditched the ridiculous armour. But then, of course, it would be rugby.

And I don't know what could make baseball good. Because I can't understand the rules. The basic idea of hitting a ball and running around a polygonal court isn't bad, but baseball has always seemed to me like rounders (played sober) with too many rules.

Whereas NASCAR actually has a lot going for it. Oval racing isn't particularly interesting as a general rule, but passing is hardly in short supply and there are multiple possible winners to every race. It has its flaws, but at least it doesn't have the almost unforgiveable flaw of American football and baseball - being ridiculously slow and designed for TV.

Carl Edwards won the Sharpie 500!
In light of Sloca's statement:

Judy Baker's poll is like a NASCAR driver bragging about being ahead after the first lap of this weekend's Sharpie 500, which in case Judy didn't know is a car race enjoyed by 'those people' often derided by liberal Democrats like herself," said Luetkemeyer spokesman Paul Sloca in a statement.

And Swing State Project's well-timed smackdown:

State Sen. Chuck Graham and state Rep. Judy Baker announced the plans to designate Route WW from Highway 63 to Olivet Road as "Carl Edwards Drive." (emphasis added)

I thought it would be worth pointing out the ultimate irony, that Carl Edwards won the Sharpie 500! :-)
