LA-Sen: Landrieu Up Big in New Rasmussen Poll

by: James L.

Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 3:37 PM EDT

Rasmussen (8/17, likely voters incl. leaners, 7/9 in parens):

Mary Landrieu (D-inc): 56 (51)
John Kennedy (R): 39 (45)
(MoE: ±4.5%)

Landrieu delivers a big kick in the pants to Kennedy in this poll, which is always fun to see. Since the last poll, Landrieu has blitzed the state with several ad buys, and these numbers may well be showing the effects of her cash advantage. On the other hand, Rasmussen doesn't exactly have a clean record of not producing wild outliers, so it's probably wise to wait for a confirmatory poll or two before anyone declares that Landrieu is enjoying a "bounce".

SSP currently rates this race as Lean Democratic.

Doubtful she actually wins by this much
But excellent news if true.

That's almost guaranteed
The new demographics in LA make is pretty much a guarantee that her ceiling is around 55%.  I'm pleasently surprised with how this race is going.  Landrieu has run a solid campaign.  I really thought this one was a 50/50 hold at best for us one year ago.  Now it's looking very good.  I imagine the more republicans in LA know about Kennedy the less they like him.

oh she finally did it!
She pulled the smoking gun out; what Kennedy said in his 2004 senate race as a Democrat. She destroyed all credibility he had. She showed the very clear way Kennedy reversed all his opinions in four years in order to run as a Republican when he actually ran to the left of the main Democratic candidate Chris John. She also went on the record defending many of Kennedy's ridiculous attacks against her and aired up ads criticizing him for ethical problems he's had in the campaign. It appears to be having an effect; this is the most Landrieu's had throughout the entire campaign. Hopefully she can maintain this mo up until the election. I still maintain there are 45% of Louisianans who will just not vote for her for any reason, partially because she has always been marginally pro-choice.

my grandmother, who's normally a big republican
says she'll probably vote for Landrieu. For no other inclination than that she's the incumbent and has worked through Katrina.

Remind her to go convince her fellow Republicans!
If she's inclined to do so.

I have a few friends in LA
They tell me pretty much the same thing.  They are voting for Landrieu because they know and trust her.  They tell me that many republicans they know are also voting for Landrieu because they don't really trust Kennedy being that he switched parties only recently and flip-flops on a lot of issues.  Landrieu appears to be shoring up a reasonable base of republican support.

Thanks again Karl Rove
Kennedy was the only supposed top-tier republican their side got to challenge a Democratic Senator this year.  Karl Rove was instrumental in getting him to switch parties and run.  Good to see their 2008 Senate recruiting is now looking like a complete disaster in their only winnable race.

Another new Ras poll - FL-Pres - McCain by 2

http://www.rasmussenreports.co...

McCain (R) 48% (46 w/o leaners)
Obama (D) 46% (43 w/o leaners

That's a slight bump for McCain, likely due to McCain's ad blitz in the state.  I've seen a lot more McCain ads than Obama ads lately in Central FL.

Ditt on the Central FL ads
The majority of the ones on the boobtube have been McCain ads, so I don't doubt that they are having some impact on the race.

I seriously am baffled as to how anyone is undecided in this decision however.

LA-Pres - McCain by 18
http://www.rasmussenreports.co...

With Leaners
McCain (R) 57%
Obama (D) 39%

Almost the same as last poll.  This is encouraging for Landrieu since her pollnumbers are seeing a big uptick despite Obama's stagnant numbers in the state.

Rasmussen Poll.
Landrieu: 53%
Kennedy:  37%

With leaners, it is 55%-39%.
