TN-Sen: Mixed Results

by: Don't Tase Me, Bro!

Three separate sets of numbers for the Tennessee Senate race between Senator Lamar Alexander (R) and Democrat Bob Tuke were released on Friday, showing three different results (in a sample of 500 people):

In an internal poll conducted by the Alexander campaign it shows:

Lamar Alexander (R-inc.): 60%
Bob Tuke (D): 30%

In an internal poll conducted by the Tuke campaign it shows:

Lamar Alexander (R-inc.): 54%
Bob Tuke (D): 32%

But when given critical information regarding Alexander, such as receiving $360,000 in contributions from "big oil interests," the numbers slip a bit for the Republican:

Lamar Alexander (R-inc.): 49%
Bob Tuke (D): 39%

I doubt that this would be enough to cost Alexander his seat. This isn't 2006 we're looking at, and the only way to put a good dent in Lamar's numbers appears to be tying him to "big oil."

Update: Still, if you have some spare dough lying around, never hurts to donate some sympathy cash to Mr. Tuke right here.

Oh my
These polls are looking very bleak for us, but I can only hope that Tuke closes the gap and wins on Election Day. Go Tuke.

60-40 Alexander
Nothing doing here.

Agreed
Tuke sounds like a decent candidate, but he will probably lose by about a 60-40 margin.  No reason to think Alexander is vulnerable.

Is Tying Them To Big Oil Really Working?
The only bounce Tuke is getting is from the last one, a push poll typing Alexander to big oil, and Tuke is still down by 10 points on that one.

It seems tying all these Republican Senators and Congressman to big oil is having mixed effects. It's working on Ted Stevens (though his indictment may have more to do with it). But on guys like Gordon Smith, Roger Wicker, Alexander, and gals like Susan Collins, it hasn't done much yet.

Not a push poll
A "push poll" is 2-3 questions long and includes a negative message that is usually false.

Message testing is when you say good and bad things about each candidate and see what works.  Saying something you would put into a TV ad on a poll is not a push poll.  A push poll would have been "Alexander eats kittens, does that make you more or less likely to vote for him".

But you are right, the big oil hit doesnt seem to be moving numbers at all.

tuke is toast
don't waste your time or money on this race folks.  50 state strategy or not we won't win every race this year and in Tennessee, where Obama does horribly, polls like this show Tuke has no chance.
