NM-02: Tinsley Gets Nasty

by: James L.

Wed Aug 13, 2008 at 1:50 PM EDT

Get a load of this. At an Association of Commerce and Industry candidate forum for the open seat race in New Mexico's 2nd CD, Sante Fe Republican Ed Tinsley decided to let loose his inner Limbaugh when criticizing Democrat Harry Teague's support of withdrawal from Iraq:

"How can I call my two nephews over there right now ... and tell them I'm running against a guy that will cut your throat -- that will cut the bottom out of your funding," Tinsley said.

Wow, talk about getting ugly. The crowd, of course, drowned out Tinsley with a rousing chorus of boos.

LP asks: "Did we find Ed Tinsley's macaca moment?" Maybe so. Check out NM FBIHOP for the video.

SSP currently rates this race as Lean Republican.

How nice would it be
that if after this election there will 3 Democratic representatives, 2 Democratic senators and a Democratic governor in the swing state of New Mexico?

I'll one up you!
Three Democratic members of the House.  Two Democratic Senators.  A Democratic governor.  New Mexico being a nice shade of blue.

exactly what he said

I think he meant on the Presidential level
which I'm definitely counting on anyway.

[ Parent ]
Exactly

totally agree
and to think this all started with Senator Domenici retiring

[ Parent ]
Do they have many statewide offices?
I know Dems hold the Governorship and Lt. Gov, what about the other statewide officials?

[ Parent ]
I think it's pretty much the works...
Auditor, SoS, AG, etc... except for a rinky-dink office like State Commissioner of Lands (or something like that).

[ Parent ]
And the Land Commissioner is term-limited in 2010
good thing for him, too, since he has been embroiled in controversy lately.

Looks like he's raising money for a 2010 run at the governorship (Richardson is also term-limited).

And State Land Commissioner is a pretty big deal out west, including here in New Mexico.

Lyons doesn't have a chance for Gov.
I don't even think he would win the GOP primary. My prediction is Heather Wilson vs. Diane Denish. The GOP primary should be bloody because of all the jobless Republicans now wandering around NM. I doubt that anybody really has a chance against Denish, though. She's of course from southern New Mexico which puts her in good standing in the swing district for that election. I suspect that NM-1 and NM-3 will go Dem anyways. Wilson may have a fighting chance in her old district but statewide she's toast (again).

Yes
I would agree with that.

Yes they do.
They hold 4 other offices. Secretary of state Herrera, State Auditor Balderas, State Treasurer Lewis, and Attorney General King. Republicans only hold State Land Commissioner Lyons' seat.

I got the impression the attorney
general is the son of a popular former governor and considering running for Governor in 2010. Isn't he Bruce King's son?

Call no man happy until he is dead-Aeschylus

[ Parent ]
Yes, he is Bruce Kings son.
But that doesn't mean he's running for Gov in 2010. Diane Denish will undoubtably be the Dem nominee and Gary King will run for re-election for Attorney General. Denish has been raising money for something like 5 years now for a run next time around. She's very popular and I doubt she will have a primary opponent (unless Martin Chavez gets a wild hair up his ass).

On another note, Gary King might be the son of Bruce King but they aren't the same caliber of politician. Bruce is one of the good 'ol boys. Not tons of education, rancher and generally pretty down to Earth. Gary on the other hand has both a PhD and a JD. He doesn't have those earthy vibes his dad has. When you meet them its apparent the difference between the two. If you don't believe that there is a difference between the two just look at their election history. In 2004, Gary King ran against Steve Pearce in NM-2. Lost terribly.

Since I'm rambling I might as well tell you about the first time I met Gov. Bruce King. I walked into Furr's Cafeteria (like Golden Corral) with my friends and there he is chewing away on some BBQ and mac-n-cheese. It was too funny. And he was incredibly nice to us once we approach him. Great guy.

If your even in Albuquerque during the State Fair let me know and we can go have lunch with him. He eats at the same place every year during the Fair.

what time of year?

State Fair is next month. Sept. 5-21 or something like that. n/t

Ed Tinsley to self
"Oops...crap."

Biased reporting
The Las Cruces Sun News reporter, Steve Ramirez, chose to not mention why Tinsley was booed, and called the audience "pro-Democrat". Perhaps some comments on the article telling him that's not quite right and bias is bad in a reporter is also not good. http://www.lcsun-news.com/news...

Oh my
This is just silly. That is probably the dumbest thing that this person could have ever said.

Not As Wacky As Macaca...
Because it's meaning is quite direct. There's less confusion about what Tinsley meant to say.

And for the lazy ones here...
here's the video directly embedded.

wow
When I read the text of the quote, I thought maybe he didnt meant to say throat, it was a slip up and he quickly corrected it.  What a damn fool.
