ME-Sen: $5 Million DSCC Ad Buy

by: Crisitunity

Mon Jul 21, 2008 at 3:06 PM EDT

Last week we mentioned the $6 million DSCC ad buy in North Carolina, which is already huge, but not out of whack with high media costs in heavily-populated North Carolina. But today, Advertising Age is reporting that the DSCC upped the ante in some other states too:

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has also made more than $15 million in buys in North Carolina, New Mexico, Minnesota and Maine, with the buys in Maine and North Carolina exceeding $5 million each. A committee official declined to comment.

$5 million in Maine?!?!?!? Given how cheap a media market Maine is and that there are only about 1.3 million Mainers to reach, that goes well beyond the firepower of "moneybomb." Call it a "moneynuke," maybe. Also, by subtraction, that leaves $4 million to be split between New Mexico and Minnesota, which isn't peanuts either. (Given how well Tom Udall seems to have things in hand, hopefully most of that money will find its way to Minnesota.)

Good lord...
This effectively gives Tom Allen an $8 million to $5 million CoH advantage.

Well...
I'm not sure Mr. Udall really needs any of that. But I'm glad Hagan and Allen are both getting boatloads of cash, and it's nice to see Franken get some love too. Especially considering a lot of people in the netroots have written him off.

I think the DSCC is waiting on other races to emerge
With their massive cash advantage I'm sure they'll end up dropping $4 mill plus on at least a couple races out of the following: OK, TX, NE, GA, KS, KY.  They are probably just waiting to gauge which of the sleeper races are most ripe for picking.

Idaho...
Idaho is the sleeper race they should drop the money on.  A disgrunteled Republican is already in the mix trying to split up the R vote.  I think our guy can slip into a 42-44% viscory.  Plus, it is pennies to advertise in Idaho.  Also, 1 liberal Senator can be a bad omen fo rthe rest of the nut-job Congressmen in that region.

Kentucky Next in Line
I suspect Kentucky is by far the most likely of your list to receive DSCC support.  It's the only one to be listed by them as a top 11 race.  It's probably polling the best for us of the list.  McConnel would be especially nice to defeat (although Inhofe and Cornyn follow close behind him in detestibility).  Last, Schumer recruited Lunsford (I'm not sure he was much involved in recruiting any of the other candidates), and there likely was some tacit understanding that the DSCC would support him.

Yes, and Lunsford can self-fund
As much as I dislike Lunsford, his politics make him a good fit for Kentucky.  Rasmussen has us within 7 points already and McConnell's own internal had us within 10.  A good DSCC commitment plus Lunsford's ability to self fund should make KY a marquee race.

Does anyone know if the Millionaires amendment will be rescended soon?  I know the House amendment is overturned, so I'd assume the Senate will be soon.

Yea Udall doesn't need it
Is this money just like a future add buy that they can retract if they want? Because if the DSCC spends any money in New Mexico they are idiots and wasting money.
Udall has been up by near double digits in every poll and is far ahead in fundraising, he needs no outside help.

This could be a head fake
I doubt theu will actually spend all of that $5 million there.

I would like to see them dumping
some serious money in MS, and Or, though they've already had some early ads to reply to Wicker.

Am I the only one who thinks...
... this is Tom Allen's last chance for DSCC money in Maine?  My guess is they're going to dump all this money in, and if his numbers don't get him close to Susan Collins they're just going to write him off.  Am I wrong on that?  We've been hoping Allen would be able to bridge the gap for a while.

I believe the ad buy is for the last 2 months of the race
It isn't money that they are spending today to get Allen's poll numbers up right now.

I said this on SGuru last night -
The New Mexico ad buy is probably an anti-Pearce ad, that the DSCC is doing to keep the mud off Udall's hands.  Define Pearce before he gets a chance to define himself, cut him off at the knees, and prevent his campaign from ever getting off the ground.

Udall probably has sent the DSCC a check for this ad buy, if not more than what they paid for New Mexico.
