TN-07: Leatherwood Closing the Gap in New Internal Poll

by: James L.

Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 8:30 PM EDT

Ethridge and Associates for Tom Leatherwood (6/28-29, likely voters, 3/28-29 in parens):

Tom Leatherwood (R): 37 (30)
Marsha Blackburn (R-inc): 48 (57)
(MoE: ±5.6%)

Leatherwood, a former state senator, is mounting another disgruntled Jason Chaffetz-style campaign (i.e. running to the right of a very right-wing representative), but his fundraising has been pretty bare bones thus far. Another "pick your poison" campaign? Maybe so, but it's sitll fun to see GOP incumbents in peril.

Don't expect this creatively-drawn R+12 district to come into play if Leatherwood knocks off Blackburn -- Bush beat down Kerry by a 66-33 margin in 2004.

Primary: August 7th

Wow -- Republicans are picky
Progressive Punch has Blackburn ranked 432/435, and that's not conservative enough?  For any district?  Zoinks.

At least Blackburn is hot
that's about the only good thing I can say about her.

Damn Right
Which is the reason why she should win.

Marsha Blackburn?!?!?
What the hell is going on over there, in the other camp's base?

What conceivable basis is there for a primary-from-the-right to Marsha Friggin Blackburn?

Maybe she too was for comprehensive immigration reform, I dunno, but I am pretty damn shocked.

The far-right is regularly launching and winning primaries, and has been for years.  The left really needs to do a lot more to strengthen the culture of primaries on our side, because we're just not using this weapon anywhere nearly as effectively as the other side does.

Blackburn wins by a mile!
Folks, this race isn't even going to be close. Leatherwood is running scared and is releasing this "internal poll" which probably polled his own supporters as a way to try and raise some money before the campaign goes broke. It's no secret to anyone that follows politics that Ethridge and Associates puts out pretty shoddy polls. Blackburn's opponent Jim Leatherwood only raised $3,000 in the first quarter of this race after floating the idea of running for nearly a year and a half. I don't think that it's any coincidence that Leatherwood put this poll out the same day that the NRA came out and openly endorsed Blackburn for her 100% gun rights voting record. Have no doubt that when election day comes around the Most Conservative Woman in Politics will be heading back up to DC for a fourth term and with a large margin of victory.

Side note:
Going completely off-track here, I just wanted to comment that the 7th District is Hannah Montana country down there. Yep, Franklin (shared with the 4th, by the way) is the home of the Cyrus family and Miley may very well be Ms. Blackburn's most famous constituent.

*Wonder what a conservative like Blackburn would have to say about the infamous Vanity Fair photos.

Right-wingers probably secretly collect them
and then deny the evidence once it's leaked.

Bill Posey is not half-alligator...and is outclassed by Davy Crockett anyway: http://www.washingtonmonthly.c...

Leatherwood is down by 11 in his own poll...
So he's probably down by atleast 15 (if not more).  That's the best he can do less than a month before the primary?

He may have a base in Memphis (ya know, people he went to high school with, etc.), but he went to Clarksville and left with his tails between his legs.  Blackburn will crush him so badly in the rest of the disctrict that whatever advantage he has in Memphis will be canceled out.

Stick a fork in Mr. Leatherwood because he is done!

Shady
Leatherwood's whole campaign is shady. Running illegal ads and yard signs. His yard sign push call. Everything he says is to just get him elected. He'll please anyone, especially his cronies down at the courthouse. This "poll" is just an other attempt by his campaign to drive a wedge between conservatives in this district. Who's he working for? Jim Tomasik? Oh wait...no one knows who he is either...
