Open Thread: Saturday iPod Challenge

by: James L.

Sat Jun 14, 2008 at 6:44 PM EDT

It's a lazy Saturday, so let's try something different. Start up your iPod (or iTunes), set that bad boy to shuffle, and tell us the first ten songs that pop up on random play.

I'm really curious to see what a cross-section of the SSP community's musical tastes will look like.

I'll kick things off in the comments.  And remember: no cheating!

iPod was in a romantic mood at first
Shania Twain: If You're Not in it for Love I'm Outta Here
From the movie Camp: Here's Where I Stand
Diana Ross & the Supremes: I'm Gonna Make You Love Me
George Strait: You Look So Good in Love
Faith Hill: You Give Me Love
Diana Ross & the Supremes: Love Child
Dolly Parton: Romeo
Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Broadway cast with Ann Margret): The Sidestep
The Carpenters: Top of the World
Wicked (OBC): The Wizard and I
Nunsense (OBC): Tackle the Temptation with a Time Step

Went to 11 since Diana Ross had 2.

The final song in the movie "Camp" . . .
. . . is "The Want of a Nail."  And you know who wrote and originally performed that one, right?

[ Parent ]
I dont
and it has always bugged the hell out of me.  Please share.

[ Parent ]
Todd Rundgren!
"The Want of a Nail" is a Todd Rundgren composition that appeared on his 1989 album Nearly Human. The song featured the great soul singer Bobby Womack on harmony. Check out the YouTube clip

You get mega-points for the Steely Dan.
If you live in this world, you're feeling the change of the guard!

Confession . . .
. . . I don't have an iPod.  Well, I did, but it got burgled last October, along with my old computer.  I scraped enough together to get another computer, but have not replaced the iPod.  If I still had it, I'm sure the list would be chock full of my usual standbys-- Todd Rundgren, Laura Nyro, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, and a good amount of Debussy and Ravel.  And, yes, I know, I'm probably the youngest person alive to be into some of those artists.

Herbie Hancock
Just listened to the Miles Davis Live at Carnegie Hall 1964 2-disc set over dinner, Hancock is on piano.  Amazing stuff if you haven't heard it - take Kind of Blue and turn the metronome up to 11, and give it a completely different emotion.  Amazing.

(Just reminding the thread that Herbie Hancock actually had a hell of a career...some people in my generation only know him for the pop crossover hit 'Miami Vice Theme Song'.)

[ Parent ]
Actually, A Point of Clarification...
Only because I am something of a pop music nerd. Herbie Hancock was not the Miami Vice Theme Song guy. That was keyboardist Jan Hammer.

What you are thinking of was the early 80s pop/synth song "Rockit", which was the song that every elementary/middle schooler in existence was learning to breakdance to in 1983/84.

:)

(...And I agree with you. Anyone who only knows Hancock for that one song and memorable MTV video are getting a very incomplete picture of his talents)

"You share your young with the wolves of the nation, there's nothing left til you pray for salvation."

Good point...
...I'm glad I'd forgotten.  That was a dark age as far as music.  I still joke that, growing up in Minneapolis in the 80s, there were basically 4 rock stations: 2 metal, 1 early Prince, 1 recent Prince.  My memory's too cloudy to recall how true that was.

Begs the question, though...why do YOU recall this?  :-)
