VA-Sen: Republicans Won't Have a Primary

Former Gov. Jim Gilmore must be smiling at the news:

Republican leaders gave former Gov. Jim Gilmore a boost today by choosing to hold a convention to nominate the party's candidate to run for the U.S. Senate next year.

The party's state central committee voted 47 to 37 to hold a convention rather than a primary.

Gilmore, the more conservative choice, is seen as having an edge among the party's inner circle over the more moderate Rep. Tom Davis.  However, his personal appeal in the state is severely weakened by his embarrassing record as Governor.  Did the Republicans just hand Mark Warner a Senate seat on a silver platter?

What's more, the prospect of a convention could cause Davis to walk away from the Senate contest altogether:

There was speculation that Davis, now, would not seek the nomination, leaving the field to Gilmore. A Davis spokesman said he would announce his intentions after the Nov. 6 General Assembly elections.

A non-candidacy by Davis would make picking up his House seat, which is trending in favor of Democrats in federal races, a much more difficult task.

Republican reaction can be found here.

Too bad
i was hopping davis be the nomiee so we could take his seat.

Davis
he doesn't need to be the nominee in order to run for his seat  as long as he participates in the primary  we can get a big name in the race before he can focus on it.

Maybe this is a defensive tactic by the Reps?
So that they won't be handing over a Senate seat and a House Seat?
But still, considering that Gilmore has similar name recognition to Warner and was still down 30% in the poll a few posts down, it's seems baffling that they'd shun Davis like this, considering that at least he can still grow in the south.  The NRSC must be fuming.

Peace. Love. Gabby.

Its not defensive
They prefer Gilmore over Davis. Which apparently means, they're either dumb or prefer Mark Warner over Davis. I consider each choice to be equally possible.

Honestly
I doubt it matters that much, although Davis has room to grow, I don't see him denting the type of lead that Warner has over him anytime soon, it's basically going from having a hypothetical chance to having zero chance.

As always, I disagree.
Then again, Tom Davis is my Congressman and I like him and I like his chances. Mark Warner has never had his record scrutinized, and there is plenty there to move people away from him, especially soft Republicans and moderates who like him. It boggles my mind how he can both be conservative enough to appeal to pockets of rural Virginians and still be a netroots hero. In time, one or the other isn't going to pan out. But for right now, Warner remains what he was in 2001 when he first ran for Governor: everything to anyone. He can portray himself as the savior of Virginia Democrats to the national party, then portray himself as a "god, gays, and guns" NASCAR Republican to Southwestern voters. And without any pressure or opposition, he gets away with it because he's a great politician. But I think someone like Tom Davis, who has spent the last 14 years of his career staking out the middle ground, instead of just pandering to both bases, can wash away that image for Warner.

Frankly I think it more likely he upsets the netroots
And besides, staking out the middle ground IS just pandering to both bases.
