AL-02: Everett Retires

And yet another Republican has decided that being in the minority cramps their style. Rep. Terry Everett (R-AL) announced his retirement this morning:

In February I will celebrate my 71st birthday. While there remains much work to be accomplished by Congress, I made a difficult decision over the weekend not to seek election for a ninth term.

In a district that clocks in at R+13, the GOP will likely have a wealth of candidates declare for the race. State Representatives David Grimes and Jay Love, both of Montgomery, are likely contenders. When asked in July about Everett potentially retiring, Grimes told the Montgomery Advertiser "I'd love to follow a man like that."

However, Democrats also have a strong bench in the area. State House Speaker Seth Hammett (D-Andalusia) lives in the district, and could potentially be wooed into the race. In addition, state Senators Jimmy Holley (D-Elba) and "Walking' Wendell Mitchell (D-Luverne) have been mentioned in the past as candidates. Other names thrown about include state Rep. Terry Spicer (D-Elba) and Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright, who recently took 60% in his re-election bid among a crowded field.

And while we've been disappointed in the past, it's worth noting that Ag Commissioner Ron Sparks has also been mentioned as a candidate.

Update: State Rep. Jay Love (R-Montgomery) says he's "definitely running" and “has been on the phone all day with supporters.”

Update 2: State Rep. Greg Wren (R-Montgomery) has formed an exploratory committee.

Update 3: Speaker Seth Hammett (D-Andalusia) passes on race

If you're going to note
that Ron Sparks lives in the district, you should note whether he carried it, or parts of it.

Actually, I was wrong

and I've corrected it. Sparks lives in Montgomery, which is split between the 2nd and 3rd districts. Sparks just barely lives in the 3rd, but could easily move into the district.

However, I believe that Sparks carried every congressional district but the 6th.

Sparks' #s in the 2nd
There are 16 counties in the 2nd district. Sparks carried Montgomery County, only part of which is in the 2nd, with almost 70%. Within the other 15 counties, which are entirely in the 2nd, Sparks got 59%.

Good news numbers
These figures show that, while these Alabama voters may lean heavily Repub in the Presidential race, they do know how to split their tickets and vote for a Democrat when they want to do it. Next fall they may really, really want to do it.

going GOP to win?
According to Doc's Political Parlor (linked from the Hotline Blog), a couple of those Democrats, Bright & Holley, may switch to the GOP if they decide to run.  Here's the info from the article:

*****

There is a rumor circulating that Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright has been quietly "shopping the idea" of running as a Republican for the AL-2 seat. Bright has been long identified as a Democrat though Montgomery mayoral elections are non-partisan. (The district unquestionably trends Republican.)

If state Sen. Jimmy Holley (D - Elba) runs for the seat, he may run as a Republican. He has been one of a handful of Democrats to caucus with the Republicans in the state Senate.

That'd be a slap in the face...
...of Ron Sparks, who helped him out on the campaign trail, recently.  Assuming that's true.

[ Parent ]
Holley's a possibility...
considering that he caucused with the GOP during the last legislative session.

[ Parent ]
Its a bit disingenuous
To say that he retired because he didn't like being in the minority.

He goes into extensive detail about his recent health problems. I can't see any reason to believe his decision is influenced by anything else.

So maybe his health...
...was reason #1, but I think it's quite likely that being in the minority was the final straw.  Certainly it would influence him in some way.

[ Parent ]
He's been in poor health for a few years,
only in the minority for a few months. Coincidence?

[ Parent ]
If his health as deteriorated significantly
Then yes, it is a coincedence. However, I'm more pointing out the fact that the health reasons, which he went into great detail about, weren't even mentioned in the story, while someone assumed was the motive was prominently featured in the first sentence.
