Wow, nice work
I think this would really be an improvement for California. The State Legislature is just too small for a state that size.

One small thing, I think you posted an Assembly map for the Central Valley.

agreed
California's bicameral legislature is just too burdensome

Though most states would do well to adopt a unicameral legislature; since both houses are both population based.

The federal government needs both for equality and representation.

I am a proponent of this
Smaller constituencies equal better representation. I really hope that the idea will come to the ballot at some point, it's worth consideration.

While I was working on the Senate map
I began wondering if somebody in the commission would suggest a unicameral legislature because of the difficulty of adhering to communities of interest, the VRA, and county lines in the Senate districts.

Do you think that's always true?
I've always thought that thinking about this question should incorporate more state-by-state comparisons:

It's a bit tricky to make state-by-state comparisons, because you want to pick otherwise-similar states that have fairly divergent constituency sizes.  For example(I guess?  Can you think of a better one?), Connecticut has 23,670 people per state representative, but Massachusetts has 40,923.  Similarly, Connecticut has 99,280 people per state senator, and Massachusetts has 163,691.  Those are pretty big ratios.  Do you think Connecticut has commensurately better representation, in terms of public policy, than Massachusetts?  That's not a rhetorical question, but I'm not sure how someone could go about answering it.

Meanwhile, if California had a 120-member unicameral, it would still have the largest population for any "lower house" constituency, and would merely move from first to fifth among "upper house" constituency sizes.  Still, I'd love to see all those elections...

I think it is in most instances
A legislator can only represent so many people and still be effective, smaller districts assure that they can stay connected with the electorate. Communities of interest and the VRA are also better implemented.

I think the ratio difference between Connecticut and Massachusetts are marginal at best, Massachusetts is bigger than Connecticut, yet the ratios aren't dramatically different.

California would still have the largest size of a lower house, but it would help with regional interest.
