Daves Redistricting 2.0.1

by: dgb

A quick diary here to say I uploaded Version 2.0.1. It will show all the districts all the time now, fixing one of your main issues. It's faster zooming, even with all the districts, but still not as perky as 1.0. On my laptop it does seem that panning is a bit slow for the large states, like NY, TX or PA, but acceptable. It is nice to always see all of the districts.

I'll be checking the diary tomorrow (Sat) and periodically next week, but won't be working on the app until after Thanksgiving.

Please keep the feedback coming. Thanks.

Great Changes
It occurred to me while working with Texas earlier though that the cities really need to be outline on the map, (accept when you turn them off), so that you can avoid splitting communities when you don't need to.

I agree
Sometimes the voting districts say the town but I really like it when I can see what city I am redistricting.

On my list
I will try to add the city shapes in a couple of weeks. (I'll won't be working on this next week.) I will probably try to only add in ones that are "large" but I need to look a little closer at that.

Thanks.

I just got a chance
to look at the new update, working with New York, and have to say, already major improvements. That is some amazing change about in just a few days. It looks a lot better, cleaner, works faster, and adds convenience to its improved features. Great Work.

This is really much better now
There are still some niggling issues, but you're getting there.

Thanks.

Thanks
With feedback from you and jwaalk and others I realized that I could avoid much of the slowness by going back to something closer to 1.0. In 1.0, all the shapes were simply drawn on a blank canvas. In 2.0, I drew them all on the map itself (using classes it gives developers for that purpose). But, naturally, letting the map handle all those shapes turns out to be very slow, hence my attempt to mitigate by showing fewer shapes. Alas, by going back to drawing the shapes on the canvas, and then simply telling the map about the canvas (and it doesn't have to know what's on the canvas) it's a lot faster. Not as fast as 1.0, it seems, but closer. I have to do the work of scaling the shapes on zoom, but I was already doing that for the labels (counties, CDs, etc.).

Anyway, I know there is more to fix and improve, but felt it best to get this change out to you sooner rather than later.

Enjoy. Thanks.

One note is that "Assign Quads" seems to have
stopped working entirely.

Ok thanks
I checked Assign By Old CDs, but not the other. It's not all that surprising, given the changes I made, but I will get that working again after Thanksgiving.

I was working about California, and I feel a change today

Surely it is this update. Big improvements since my way for use the application comparing with the 1.0 version. Thank you David.

This is ready for have pretty works from many people.

Definite Improvement
Much faster overall, and the screen shots are a ton better.

Two feature requests, though:
1) A way to disable "double-click to color".  If I'm panning a lot, I don't want to accidentally recolor things.  (I might have missed how to do this).
2) A way to assign an entire county to a CD.  Easier for states that insist on this, and a good way to avoid missing tiny voting districts.

Very much improved
Thanks a lot - I'm working on a NY State Senate right now, and having only half the districts showing in NYC was doing my head in. Much better now.

Having problems with renumbering though
When I renumber, the colours change but the district numbers don't and it doesn't want to let me save.

As far as I can tell, this isn't just lag.

Labels
I think I need to change the CD labels after renumbering. But if you can't save or it's more that the labels in some other way, that's another bug. I'll investigate when I get back from T-day. Thanks.

Greatest Time Sink...Ever.
I have a question, though. Is there a way to just lump an entire county into a district without having to hit every individual precinct?

"American X"

That would be cool
Maybe an idea for 3.0. Although Dave's earned himself a break for the holidays.

Popular request
I'll put it on my list.

Having trouble using the coloring function
I am unable to double-click on the coloring function to select district colors.  I am using a mac....

If I could start playing around with this version, I can see how in various respects it would be more user-friendly than the older version.  Been an avid fan since you came out with that version in Spring 2009...

figured it out
I seem to have figured it out, although on a Mac it is a bit clunky to use.  But I like the thinner lines...

Been playing around with a GOP gerrymander of PA for a while; the best I can get realistically without it becoming a dummymander is a solid 12-6 GOP map, eliminating either CD-4 or CD-12 in Western PA.  It is possibly to combine Altmire and Critz together in a narrow ugly district going from north Pittsburgh suburbs where Altmire lives along a narrow tendril across northern Westmoreland to Johnston, where Critz lives.  The GOP may very well do this as the resultant district isn't all that Democratic (50-52%) and the two may duke it out in a bloody primary, leaving the way for a Republican to snatch the seat.

Alternatively, I've been snaking Altmire up to Erie, which, depending on whether you give him part of Pittsburgh and shift PA-14 south to vacuum up the Democratic cities out of the old CD-12, brings him up to a 57-60% Democratic district.  It shores up considerably CD-3 and CD-18 for Republicans.  Then it is a rather easy exercise to eliminate Critz altogether by combining him with Shuster next door in a reconfigured CD-9.  Even stretching as far west as Greene and Fayette county, I've been able rather effortlessly to make this district a 57-42 or a 58-41 blowout for the GOP; that's how red the mountains are.

The Assign old CDs
does not work for CA, TX, or NY. Cause of special numbers or not?

28, Liberal Democrat, CA-26

Maybe I broke it
I did try this after making the 2.0.1 change, but not with either of those 3 states. I think I broke to Assign By Quads. I'll look into this after T-day.

Thanks.
