Sunday Night Miscellany

Well, it's still Sunday in mighty Mountain Time...

  • IN-07: According to the Indianapolis Star, Democratic Rep. Julia Carson has committed herself to run for a sixth term in the House.  I can't say that I'm thrilled with this development.  Carson, who has had the misfortune of dealing with a series of serious health issues during her tenure, has performed weakly in her last two campaigns against underfunded and low-profile challengers, despite occupying a district with a PVI of D+8.7.  While Kerry won Indiana's 7th by 16 points in 2004, Carson only won by a margin of 10.  And while Democratic performance in Indiana's eight other congressional districts surged between 2004 and 2006, Carson's margin of victory slid to a mere 8 points, despite outspending her opponent by a lopsided margin and receiving DCCC assistance.  This seat shouldn't be in play, but as long as Carson is on the ballot, it will present a rare opportunity for House Republicans.  (H/T: Blue Indiana)

  • IL-18: Dick Versace for Congress?  Will he play in Peoria?

  • NH-01: Jeb Bradley offers his 100% support for the Iraq War.

  • WA-08: Make Dave Reichert pay the price for his enduring support of President Bush.  Toss in some coin to the Burn Bush effort via the Blue Majority page.

  • Consultants take note!  People-powered guru DavidNYC offers his step-by-step guide on how to run (and win) a congressional campaign in 2008.

UUGH!!!!!!!!!
As I've said here before, I absolutely adore Julia Carson, but she has no business running for re-election.  James is right that she's putting a should be safe seat in play, and she's not going to get the pass she's gotten over the past couple of campaigns.  That said, she's made her decision, so I'm going to TRY to stop bitching and complaining about it, and get ready to go to work where needed to re-elect her.

who's next in that district?
So we have two more years to cultivate the bench in IN-07.
Who's in the line-up for Julia's seat or other electoral opportunities?

That's where things get more problamatic

Rumor is (and I think this is what's happening) is that she's grooming her grandson Andre Carson to take her place.  He's currently running for an open seat on the Indianapolis City-County Council.  He's held a few different local level government jobs, and might be a good candidate -- but there's such a whiff of nepotism and entitlement with this it's even turning me off, and I've supported pretty much everything Julia has done.  Two other names I've heard bounced around (and I'd gladly support eitherof them) are State Rep. Carolene Mays and State Sen. Glenn Howard.  Both are experienced, pretty progressive black legislators from central city Indianapolis who I think could win over more of the white vote than Andre Carson could (remember this IS NOT even close to a black majority district).  We'll have to see how this all plays out, but it would have been A LOT easier if she had bowed out.

elephant in the room
Do we know anything about Bart Peterson's future plans?

running for re-election
He's running for a third term as Mayor this fall, and has ruled out running for gov. in '08.  Despite a bit bumpier second term than first, he still should win re-election pretty easily.  After that, who knows ...
