(NV-Sen) Sharron Angle's Downfall: REPUBLICANS

(Originally from Nevada Progressive)

Not that long ago, the Nevada Republican Party truly was a "big tent", one that could fit the more traditional "libertarian conservatives" that once dominated, pragmatic conservatives, moderates, and others. But these days, it seems to be dominated by "Tea Party, Inc." and the radical religious right. And no one better demonstrates this better than Sharron Angle and her ascendancy in the Nevada GOP.

Perhaps this is why we're seeing more and more "Republicans for Reid" speaking out?

atdleft :: (NV-Sen) Sharron Angle's Downfall: REPUBLICANS
Former Clark County (Las Vegas Metro) Sheriff Bill Young spoke about how Harry Reid has delivered in keeping Nevada safe.

And Former Nevada First Lady Dawn Gibbons spoke about Reid's commitment to education, reminded us of all her work on education reform, and made sure we didn't forget about Sharrontology's desire to starve it to death.

Republican former First Lady Dawn Gibbons said today that she supports Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid because of his diligence and hard work, not because she wants to spite her Republican ex-husband, Gov. Jim Gibbons, who she said cheated on her and who has been a frequent Reid critic.

"I've known Harry Reid for a long time," Dawn Gibbons said today during an endorsement event at UNLV. "He's a strong advocate and a strong voice -- someone we need in these trying times."

Gibbons also noted that Reid is a good husband to his wife Landra and calls his kids daily. [...]

Taking a page right out of Reid's playbook, Gibbons criticized Reid's Republican opponent Sharron Angle, accusing her of having an "extreme and dangerous" policy on education.

During the 15-minute event, Gibbons said the words "extreme and dangerous" four times. Students who have benefited from government grants and scholarships and spoke with Gibbons to lend their support to Reid repeated the phrase another four times.

Interesting enough, John L. Smith wrote in his column this morning about what may be a larger trend of prominent Republicans coming out to endorse Reid. Why? Well, they've been here in Nevada for quite some time, they understand the strong relationship Harry Reid has with our state. Plus, they've also seen with their own eyes Sharron Angle, her dangerous extremism, and how detrimental a "Senator Angle" would really be to our state.

No wonder why more and more Republicans, whether they be traditional "paleo-conservatives", pragmatic business folks, or middle-of-the-road moderates, are speaking out and speaking up for Reid.

Remember that this used to be the party of Abraham Lincoln, the party of Teddy Roosevelt, the party of Dwight Eisenhower, the party of Barry Goldwater, and the party of Former Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn. This used to be a big tent for civil rights advocates, environmentalists, libertarians, old-school conservatives, rural interests, urban interests, and more. But now? Now it's this?

Perhaps it's the reverse of what Ronald Reagan used to say. These people haven't left the Republican Party. The Republican Party has left them by veering so extremely to the right and nominating people like Sharron Angle who care more about getting praise from outside interests than doing what's right for Nevada.

Sure, there have been many times when progressive Democrats were irritated by Reid. He's certainly no progressive icon, and there have been many times I've taken Reid to the woodshed for not being more progressive.

But you know what? At the end of the day, Reid is not in the Senate to be some progressive icon. He's there to serve ALL OF US in Nevada. Perhaps that's why all of these Republicans can join Democrats, even "dirty fucking hippie" progressives like moi, in supporting Harry Reid. That's something Sharrontology doesn't get, and I guess that's why she can't win here.

Why aren't the videos showing?
Is there a problem posting YouTube vids today? I'll keep trying...

Yes, Virginia, there ARE progressives in Nevada!

Never mind!
Phew! Now I see them. ;-)

Reid needs to bomb the airways
with a "Republicans for Reid" ad to make conservatives who don't like him a little more comfortable voting, independents too. Feature Bill Young, Gino Sparks, and Bob Cashell for one, it'd be a pretty potent ad.

sorry, Geno Martini

He is, he is...
In fact, the last YouTube features Bill Ames, President of the Nevada Peace Officers Research Association. He's a Republican, and NRA member, and a Republican for Reid. I think it's brilliant that they chose him for the ad hitting Sharron Angle for her "Second Amendment Remedies" BS.

Oh yes, and another Republican for Reid was featured in his very first ad released October 2009:

I wouldn't be surprised if more are asked to come forward in these next few days and weeks. :-)

I don't mean online ads
I mean million dollar ad buys.

That WAS a million $ ad buy!
The above ad I embedded was airing last fall all over the place, and IMHO helped in stopping the bleeding late last year and stabilizing Reid's numbers (they had to stop falling before he could bring them back up).

Now, I'm just waiting to see what new ads they do with Dawn Gibbons, Elaine Wynn, Wayne Newton, Bill Young, and/or any of the other prominent "Republicans for Reid". It's not like there's a shortage of material to work with!

Peter Coyote narrating is a nice touch

Wayne Newton is a prominent Republican?
Somehow you are forgetting about Bob Cashell, probably the most important get for a Reid, mayor of crucial swing part of the state, Reno, and highly respected as a moderate.

He's popular here in Vegas...
The part of the state where Reid needs to run up his margin (must be double digit win in Clark County!) to win statewide. That's why I was thinking aloud about business leaders, folks in the gaming industry that people here listen to.

Here's how the Nevada electoral math works:

- The rurals are heavily Republican, so Reid just has to avoid a 3-1 or 4-1 clobbering.

- Washoe County (Reno & Tahoe) is the swing area (plus Angle served as a legislator from the Reno suburbs from 1999 to 2006). If Reid can at least stay even there, he'll be fine.

- Clark County (Greater Las Vegas) usually leans Democratic, but any candidate running statewide MUST win Clark by double digits to win the state! Reid knows this, so that's why the state party has three field offices here, our airwaves are full of his ads, and events are happening all the time. Reid MUST win BIG here in Vegas to win statewide.

You're probably right about Bob Cashell, as he does seem to have a good reputation in Reno... I'm just wondering how it would play down here in Vegas. (North/South divide, it's complicated...) Perhaps it can just be targeted to Reno? Or maybe he can be included in one with Oscar Goodman? I know he's a wild and crazy loose cannon, but "The World's Happiest Mayor" is still hella' popular here in Vegas and his recent endorsement certainly helped.

He's walking advertisement
from a beer commercial, "Oscar Goodman, the most interesting man in the world". His popularity is baffling, but I am kind of glad to see his relationship with the Democratic party is on the rocks, they don't need to be associated with riffraff like him. If he'd been the Democratic nominee for Governor I would have quietly backed Sandoval.

Sharron Angle's "downfall"?
If anything, I think Angle has, at least for now, stopped the bleeding. Sure, she probably underperforms "generic Republican" by ten points, but I think she's stemmed any "downfall" over the past few weeks.

No, she hasn't...
Ask people in the know here in Nevada. It's mainly been NRSC/RNC/Rove $ that's been propping her up, but many Nevada Republicans don't even like her and the state GOP's field operation is still laughed at as an EPIC FAIL. While this hasn't been smooth sailing for Reid, there's no way Angle can really say she's "on top" here.

You should also mention...
that Frank Fahrenkopf, the RNC chair when Reagan was President, also endorsed Reid for his ability to get things to the floor of the Senate and actually voted on.

Yes, Fahrenkopf does represent gaming interests now who have a stake in this.  But still... it's Reagan's freaking RNC chairman!!
