FL-Gov: Chiles Will Exit Race, Endorse Sink

Sweet score for Alex Sink:

Independent candidate Bud Chiles confirmed Wednesday he would drop out of Florida's race for governor and back Democratic nominee Alex Sink. [...]

In a statement, aide Jim McClellan said Chiles would make the announcement official at a Thursday morning news conference in Tallahassee.

Democratic pollster Tom Eldon said the rise of surprise GOP nominee Rick Scott ended up changing the electoral math for Chiles, the son of former Democratic Gov. Lawton Chiles, who had jumped into the race in June as a alternative to the two major party candidates.

"Democrats, independents and a healthy percentage of Republicans have been coalescing around Sink ever since Scott's receipt of the GOP's nomination and this has marginalized Chiles in recent polling," said Eldon. "Chiles, like these voters, is rightly worried about the damage Rick Scott could do to the state if he were to be elected governor. Chiles could live with himself if Bill McCollum became governor. I don't think he wanted to face the morning-after had Rick Scott just been elected governor."

PPP's most recent poll indicated that the bulk of Chiles' support came from conservative-leaning folks who just couldn't stomach Rick Scott. His exit may only have a net neutral effect, but his endorsement is surely welcome news here.

UPDATE: Some more from Chiles:

Chiles added that he came away from the meeting "feeling a whole lot better" about Sink's stance on issues he cares about, such as renewable energy, children's issues and spurring small business. "It seemed to me like that there was a lot more agreement than I might have thought."

Oh, this is wonderful news!
This should be the impetus that will put Alex Sink across the finish line well ahead of Rick Scott--I'm psyched.

Good news
This is good news for Sink!

Even if it is a net neutral...
it takes out a potential wild card.  Now it's a Sink vs Scott straight up general campaign, and this will allow Sink to better stake out the middle.

If I was in Crist's campaign I'd suggest that he endorse Alex Sink.  Charlie would have to say that he respects the fact that she's supports Meek, but that he's worked well with her before and think she's a better candidate for Governor than Scott, partisan politics aside. This would also force Rubio to answer questions if he supports/endorses Scott.

Crist
That would be awesome for Sink, but I think that would probably cost Crist a lot of center-right voters, which he can't afford to lose to Rubio.

I think the center-right sees Scott as a fringe nut...
So Crist endorsing Sink would burnish his indie cred, showing he puts Florida first.  Would Rubio take the bait and support/endorse Scott?

in a perfect world for sink
she would SOMEHOW get mccullum to back her and then crist would have cover.  quite unlikely tho.

Good Point
I forgot to consider that Scott is so far-right that the moderates don't like him anyway.  And if, as Doug said, McCollum backed Sink, would it look sore-losery or just common sense?

i think
it would have to come after a pretty big gaffe by scott.  something putting his sanity into question, or something that risks the status quo of florida.  Maes style "bikes r teh UN's tool of 3vil" statement, or somehow calling for elimination of social security (only valid in FLorida ofc)

McCollum backing Sink would mean two things.....
First, it would mean Sink is a conservaDem, which a lot of base Democrats won't like about her governorship if so, but McCollum is conservative and simply won't endorse a Democrat who isn't sufficiently to the right.

Second, it would mean McCollum is committed to NEVER running for office again.  Remember that even Jeb Bush and Haley Barbour have rallied behind Scott, so McCollum actually endorsing Sink would put him truly on an island, forever regarded as a traitor.  Why does he want to do that to himself?

It's absurd to think McCollum will endorse Sink unless his resentment toward Scott is much deeper and stronger than any of his political instincts.

Good God, no, anything but! Sink is going to have to fight tooth-and-nail to win......
People here need to drop any illusions about FL-Gov.  Yes Sink has new life thanks to Rick Scott running at all and now beating McCollum, but at BEST she is no more than a SLIGHT favorite to eek out a NARROW victory.  By all accounts Sink had run a terrible campaign before Scott entered, and everyone seems to forget that and disregard that she actually needs to run a GOOD campaign to win even against Scott.  And Scott will just attack her to death on the airwaves with his unlimited cash, it's foolish to think that won't have an impact.

This is a dogfight and I would give only the narrowest of leans to Sink.  The Chiles endorsement is one small piece of a very big puzzle for her, it's not THAT big a deal.  Chiles himself has NO organic support, he's just a proxy for people who don't like the other choices, and it's debatable whether more than just a very few of them are likely to give his endorsement of Sink all that much weight.

That's right.
You make a good point. I remember that people were comparing her to Martha Coakley a couple months ago.

Guilty
as charge. I was comparing her to Martha Coakley a few months. Yes let us have no illusions. Just because Rick Scott is a SOB, he's a SOB with tons of money and as we've seen with Jon Corzine and hopefully Meg Whitman in November, you have tons of money to make the race a dogfight up to election day.

Your assuming anybody still likes him or
even trusts him. Sink in still in the favorable range while Scott has become the epitome of toxic, and guess what everyone in Florida know's this. It played out in front of them for several months. While Sink sat back and watched and slowly, but surely inserted her self into the front of the pack with out a ton of name recognition. Moderates will most likely vote for her and we know that, because guess what NO one likes Scott except for his half of the Republican party. Chiles had no logical reason to enter the race. He thought he could be the Crist of the Governors race. It didn't happen, but he did receive the support of a number of disenchanted Mccollum supporters and drew some Democrats as well. Some of those Mccollum supporters will either return to Scott, stay home, or vote for the moderate Sink. It's the only logical conclusion. Of course this is all dependent on the GOTV effort as well. But I bet you a million she is the Governor of Florida by January 2011.

feeling jealous
Florida Republicans nominated Scott, Colorado Republicans nominated Maes. Why couldn't Iowa Republicans have nominated Vander Plaats?

Be careful what you wish for, Iowa likely would have gotten...
...GOVERNOR Vander Plaats in that situation.

Remember that Maes and Scott were nominated for open seats, not against unpopular incumbent Democrats like Culver.  Culver can never be as strong this fall as Hickenlooper and Sink, as fresh faces, can be.

Culver would have been no better than 50-50 against Vander Plaats.

Yeah
Normally I cheer on the cat fud and think it's best when the most conservative candidate is nominated by the Republicans.

But, not this time-- Culver likely would have lost to Vander Plaats.. as debatable as it is. I would much rather have Governor Branstad than Governor BVP.

gotta say
I love "Rick Scott Versus The Universe" almost as much as "Rick Scott's Finest Hour."  "Rick Scott and the Infinite Sadness of Election Day" will probably be the best though.

In case you're wondering

book 1 Rick Scott Versus the World

book 2 Rick Scott Gets It Together

book 3 Rick Scott's Finest Hour

book 4 Rick Scott Versus The Universe

book 5 Rick Scott and His Precious Little Support

book 6 Rick Scott and the Infinite Sadness of Election Day

Chiles was probably the FL equivalent
of NV's none-of-these-candidates choice for a lot of those poll respondents.

So with Chiles' endorsement, hopefully his supporters (mostly Repubs and conservatives according to PPP) will grudgingly move to Sink. Especially if he follows up with a few campaign appearances on her behalf.

PPP: new FL poll ASAP please!

Who was is that said they would vote for chiles instead of Scott on here?
I think is was GOPVOTER.  What would he do now?  Stay home?

The nods made it clear the other day that singling out people's specific votes is something we should avoid.

Thank you.
Yes, these types of discussions aren't really useful and are prone to de-rails.

[ Parent ]
Not as good as it sounds
Good grief, Chiles supporters went 63% for McCain.

If Chiles really wanted to maximize his impact on helping Sink, he should have stuck around and ran as a social conservative populist, a quasi-Huckabee. The Cubans and central FL trailer-parkers were McCollum's base. Even a low-budget, grassroots campaign targeted at those specific folks would have a huge impact.

on the update
if chiles was REALLY in the race b/c of the issues shouldn't he have spoken to Sink before hand to find out her positions to see if a run was necessary?  sounds like a cop-out to me.
