IN-03: Dungeons & Dragons & Wingnuts

In the race to replace disgraced ex-Rep. Mark Souder in the House of Representatives, Republican state Sen. Marlin Stutzman is the undisputed front-runner to take control of this conservative northeastern Indiana district in November.

Democrats have a very respectable nominee for the seat in former Fort Wayne councilman and physician Tom Hayhurst, but the partisan lean of the district poses an incredible climb in times like these. So it may be worth taking a closer look at Stutzman, who earlier this year lost the GOP nomination for Evan Bayh's Senate seat to lobbyist kingpin Dan Coats. A new profile on Stutzman by the Fort Wayne Reader presents plenty of dirt, including this particular detail that offers a hint at just how much of a nutbag this guy really is (emphasis added):

In 2009, Stutzman co-hosted a dinner with State Representative Cindy Noe (R-87) at the annual Creation Evidence Expo, an Indianapolis organization that seeks to "make current scientific evidence that supports the conclusion that God created man." Stutzman says that he and Noe (who is on the Education Committee in the Indiana House) were asked by the group to host the dinner, to which many legislators were invited.

"The information they had there was good information," he says. "We had some very good conversations with the folks at the Expo, just getting to know them, over the last couple of years. They wanted to raise awareness of their issue, and wanted to meet as many folks who are willing to support their organization and also make those who are in the legislature aware of their issue as well."

Over at Blue Indiana, Thomas (a great friend of SSP), asks a pretty pertinent question: Exactly what "information" did Stutzman find so compelling that day? Was it anything along these lines?

As if the website for this event wasn't enough, a quick look at some of the groups behind the operation reveal all you need to know about the scientific validity of these clowns. Take the Institute for Creation Research, which features a story at the moment entitled "Is there some truth to dragon myths?"

There are other reasons to doubt that dragon legends arose from fossil-based speculations. Tales of dragons are almost universal and were incorporated into the historical background of virtually every people group on every continent. How could so many different cultures conjure up such similar details in their dragon legends, unless their ancestors actually encountered them?

It would be easily explained if humans had actually seen living dinosaurs.

Emphasis definitely fucking added!

I suppose it should be pretty frightening to know that this guy -- an individual who throws parties for grown men and women who believe in the existence of dragons -- could easily wind up as a national lawmaker next year, but I think he'll be right at home among the teabagging class of 2010.

Obviously dragons exist...
didn't you ever see Mulan? Just because it was a cartoon movie doesn't mean that it didn't depict reality faithfully.

wow
Funny, I really did not think that he was all that bad when I met him. Interesting to say the least. He is still a step above Souder at any rate. God why does this have to be such a Republican year? Why couldn't this have happened in 08 or 06 it would be lean D for sure. One thing worth noting though is that Hayhurst out raised Stutzman. Hayhurst is a GREAT candidate. The thing about these comments are that there are probably a lot of people who do not care or even agree with them in the district. Let's see how this plays out, I do not think it is impossible for Hayhurst to win. If we lost the House but Hayhurst won I would be very happy. If anyone is interested in donating money Hayhurst is a good bet, I have heard a rumor that Stutzman is thinking of running for Senate in 2012 if Lugar retires. I know you guys do not want that. I am offering my 2006 Lexus LS 430. It has 55 thousand miles. I am the original owner. This is a great car, I drive it from Harrison County to Louisville and back every day and I have NEVER had any mechanical issues at all. I have serviced it every 3k miles at Tafel motors. I have all records and would be happy to provide a carfax. It is white with tan leather. It has a bose sound system, heated seats, a moon roof and every feature you can imagine. I am asking only 25,000 dollars. I am not interested in a trade. Please email me with any questions you may have. Please make mention of the weather in the email because I know there are a lot of hackers on Craigslist and I want to make sure you are human. Thanks!!!

To hell with it
I sometimes put my comments in word to spell check them and I had a rough draft of a Craig list post already opened and I pasted it there and somehow I copied both on my post. I have not had coffee today, that would explain it. Well since I already posted it does anyone need a car?

I once had accidentally copied a SSP post
to one of my draft chapters..... I am sooooo glad my editor chose to not comment on it, beyond the standard dele.

Hahaha
I have no idea what you do for a living but now I'm starting to wonder what the most awkward context is to randomly insert political comments...:D

On the plus side...
When I go to DC next year, I have someone to invite to my weekend D&D session.

I think there's a lot of evidence to actually support their human/dinosaur position
Several television documentaries have clearly shown that Fred, Wilma, and Pebbles had a very close relationship with Dino.  James, I think an apology is in order.

Funny thing is
I just watched How to Train Your Dragon on the plane a few days ago. :P

It is an interesting question though
Whether dragons and other monster myths originated from finding fossils and making up stories to explain them or memories passed down orally of early man's encounters with Pleistocene megafauna.  Obviously dinosaurs had been extinct for millions of years and would only factor in the fossil theory, but plenty of huge mammals were still around and could have formed the basis of such legends.

Personally I think creatures that are alive today and human imagination were enough to invent these stories.

What's interesting though
is how different dragons are across the world. In the Europe dragons are fearsome monsters that have to be slain by Beowulf or whatever, in China they're not really like that. I guess people in China really did keep dinosaurs as pets, but in Europe they were all T-rexes and velociraptors so they were evil?

Santa myths prove santa is real!
Also, this reminds me of a t-shirt often seen at gaming conventions:

(front) Jesus Saves (back) Others take full damage

Does Jesus have the Evasion feat?
If so, he takes no damage instead of just half damage.

I thought you were actually talking about more political posturing about tabletop role-playing games
such as D&D.

Because I don't see the dungeons anywhere.  Unless you're talking about where these people think up these things.

While the story is funny as heck I hate guilt by association
I mean just cause the guy hosted a dinner for a bunch of nut jobs and said nice think about them doesnt means he believes in Dinosaurs!

That's what politicians do. They do to dinners and events and try to make the participants think they are sympatico.

I mean how many events did Jerry Brown attend with Jim Jones:
http://www.redroom.com/files/i...

or Obama with Rev Wright.

Doesnt mean they believe the same wack-a-do stuff that those nutjobs do.

Nowhere did Stutzman ever say he believed in their cause or in people riding dinosairs. In fact his statement about them having "good information", "getting to know them" and them "getting their facts out" seems like typical standoffish politico talk as you can get.

Until I start to hear Stutzman talk about "evilution" and "monkeys" I think this is a bit of a hit job diary entry.

my reaction was the same
I thought his comments sounded like standard politispeak.  I don't think this story hurts him in this district (where I grew up.)  The people who will be alarmed by it were already commited to vote for Hayhurst anyway.

Hold On A Minute...
"It would be easily explained if humans had actually seen living dinosaurs."

You mean, humans haven't actually seen living dinosaurs?

Yeah
Like Jurassic Park never happened!
