11:16pm: Move over, Sarah Palin and Jim DeMint, because the GOP has a new kingmaker, and his name is Dale Peterson. With John McMillan haven gotten the Peterson Bump, he sent Dummy back to his chicken farm, 52-48. (That's with 2800 out of 2804 precincts reporting, although there's still no call from the AP. Because they're thorough like that.) (Um, with that, I think we're going to call it a night.)
10:10pm: In what I'm sure is a case of a late-breaking surge of former Dale Peterson supporters, John McMillan has pushed into the lead in the Agriculture Commissioner GOP primary, 51-49, over that sign-stealing cur, "Dummy" Dorman Grace.
10:05pm: In case you're wondering, Sewell will face off in November against Donald Chamberlain, who won the AL-07 GOP runoff over C. Salter 57-43. In other news, congratulations to future Rep. Terri Sewell.
10:02pm: And with about 80% reporting, the AP has finally called AL-07, in favor of Terri Sewell. She wins 56-44, after outspending Shelia Smoot almost 10:1.
10:00pm: This is way down in the weeds, but the delightfully-named Twinkle Cavanaugh has won the GOP runoff for Public Service Commission Position 1, 61-39.
9:56pm: At the federal level, that leaves just AL-07. And with Shelia Smoot losing Jefferson County 53-47 (that's the county where she's a Commissioner), that doesn't bode well for her chances.
9:52pm: And hot on the heels of that, the AP calls AL-02 for Martha Roby. She's at 61%, over Rick Barber, and she'll face Bobby Bright in November. In the meantime, Zombie Lincoln must cry himself to sleep tonight, his nation condemned to health care slavery.
9:49pm: The AP has called AL-Gov for Robert Bentley. He'll face Ron Sparks in the fall.
9:33pm: Looks like more whimper than bang. Bentley 57, Roby 61, Sewell 54.
9:20pm: With 30% reporting, Bentley is crushing, 56-44. So is Roby (22% in), 58-42. Sewell (20% in) has widened her lead to 55-45.
9:09pm: Bentley up by more than 7 points now with 15% in statewide.
9:08pm: More results are coming in. AL-07 has shot up to 15% reporting, and the race has tightened to 53-47 Sewell.
9:00pm: Time, fortunately, appears to have resumed its forward progress. With 7% in, Bentley has a 59-41 lead. With 6% in, Roby is at 72%. AL-07 still stuck on 2%.
8:45pm: Some eleven-dimensional superstrings have wriggled a few AL-07 results into existence - for now. Terri Sewell leads Shelia Smoot 57-43 with about 2% (maybe???) reporting.
8:42pm: Hahah - this has been pretty funny. Now we're down to 1% in AL-Gov, but the vote totals actually keep increasing. Bentley leads 62-38, 2,727 to 1,666 votes. Forget about a ganja break - this has been more like an LSD break.
8:37pm: The DeLorean has hit 88mph, because we are travelling BACK THROUGH TIME. The AP is now down to less than 2% reporting in the gov race, or as I like to call it, the Curious Election of Benjamin Button.
8:30pm: Hmm, wonder if that was an error on the AP's part. We're now down to just 3% reporting, with a 56-44 Bentley lead. Over in AL-02, 1% is reporting, and Martha Roby has a 69-31 lead over Rick "The Barber" Barber. Nothing in AL-07 yet.
8:19pm: A teeny trickle of results are in so far. With 7% of precincts reporting, Robert Bentley has a 52-48 lead over Bradley Byrne in the gov race - though that translates to just 718 votes to 653.

We're watching runoffs in a trio of Alabama races tonight: AL-Gov & AL-02 on the Republican side, and AL-07 on the Democratic side. Polls closed a few minutes ago, at 8pm Eastern.

It's a Tuesday?
Guess no one's feeling the Alabama fever tonight

Still got a feeling
Barber might pull the upset.

Gather your *Yawns*
Mehz, AL races are boring.

Disagree
Look @ the AG Com. run-off. McMillan leads!

The thug tears down some yards signs
and pulls back into the lead.

50% of Alabama Republicans don't give a rip about Alabama.

Nearly 30% in
and thug up by 27 votes.  Too bad it isn't this close in the Gov race.

very weird AP issues
I'd ignore the results for a while.  AP keeps yanking back precinct reporting numbers, but is still showing Lauderdale County as mostly in, but with turnout down about 90% from the primary.

Let's remember AP's Mobile County numbers late on primary night, which fooled us all.

weird AP results continued
Now AP has yanked back Lauderdale as well, and we are back to one percent of precincts reporting statewide.

ap numbers are wrong
They have the Chilton County numbers wrong.  I live here and our local paper is giving the numbers live from the courthouse and the AP has 1280 for Byrne and 844 for Bentley when the numbers are actually 1082 for Bentley and 495 for Byrne a major difference.

Alabama has been really disappointing
First they opted to vote for thugs and criminals over Dale Peterson, and now it looks like Rick Barber won't be bringing the army of crazy, either. Thank God we still have South Carolina....

Kansan by birth, Californian by choice, and Gay by the grace of God.

Meanwhile, here in Virginia...
Portsmouth mayor James Holley got recalled by a 2-1 margin. This is actually the second time this has happened; I believe the last time was back in 1996.

What did he do to get recalled?

21, male, CA-15 (home and voting there), LA-2 (college)

[ Parent ]
He had an aide do personal errands for him and was verbally abusive to her.
It was actually 1987 when he was recalled last; he made it back into office in 1996.

[ Parent ]
Democracy by idiocy
So they recalled a guy once then elected him a decade later and then recalled him again.

First significant results
Partial returns from Chilton County, between B'ham and Montgomery on I-65, show Byrne winning 60-40.  In the primary, Byrne took only 12% in this county; James and Moore together took 61%.  Could be an indicator that Byrne's efforts to make AEA the issue are working.

Chilton numbers
They're wrong by a large margin.  Here's a link to a local paper covering Chilton county elections from the courthouse as they're being counted.  http://clantonadvertiser.com/n...

AP Screws Up Again?
Ah! Just saw the earlier comment claiming that AP has the Chilton County numbers wrong.  If so, then I retract my suggestion that the results are a big positive indicator for Byrne.

Physics joke!
String theory jokes are how you know this is a classy and wonktastic site. I heartily approve.

Also, I really hope Smoot pulls it out...and it would be impressive if she did, considering she was outspent like 10 to 1.

Kansan by birth, Californian by choice, and Gay by the grace of God.

Who Am I Rooting For?
Who will be a weaker candidate against Sparks? I know I'm rooting for Barber because he's crazy.

Neither
Both are leading by large margins in the polls, although Byrne is under 50% while Bentley is way over 50% against Sparks.

[ Parent ]
Rasmussen numbers
mean nothing.  Ras' weirdest trait has been oddball pairings pre-primary, with Colorado today being another such result (Romanoff outperforming Bennet).

[ Parent ]
This may make perfect sense
But not to me: How can 500 precincts be reporting in the Republican race for AG Commissioner, but 510 in the Gov race?

Obviously the work of
Thugs and criminals.

[ Parent ]
Thugs and criminals
Apparently thugs and criminals are dominating the Republican primary.

Bentley winning for real
Looks now like a Bentley win.  Byrne is up narrowly in Jefferson and Mobile, and is actually losing in Baldwin.  Bentley's up in a large majority of rural counties.

That surprises me
Driving through Baldwin County yesterday, I saw Byrne signs everywhere. Not one Bentley sign.

[ Parent ]
AEA
The Alabama Education Association is the big winner if Bentley ends up winning.  They've been all over Byrne since the very beginning and trying to sink him from the start.  Looks like it's going to work, and a relative unknown state representative from Tuscaloosa is going to be the Republican nominee for Governor.  This is going to be a major suprise.

How does "Governor Bentley" make the AEA a winner?......
Unless Sparks pulls off the upset in a Republican year in a conservative state, what does the AEA get for all this?  Is Byrne so much worse on their issues than Bentley and others, or were they just trying to stop the strongest Republican to give the Democrat a real shot?  As it goes, Sparks is the underdog no matter what I think.

Bentley
Byrne was proposing to do a major overhaul of public education and creating a bunch of charter schools and closing a bunch of public schools, and trashing the AEA every time he opened his mouth while Bentley has said nothing about the AEA and is believed to be close to them on education issues.  That's why "Governor Bentley" is much better than "Governor Byrne"

[ Parent ]
Thanks, I didn't know that backstory. (nm)

Um
The AEA and Byrne are bitter enemies. With the AEA in the GOP Primary, it's not about who is better for Sparks, it's simply about beating Byrne.

Interesting note though is that the AEA has contributed more money to Byrne throughout his career than Bentley.

Glad to see sedition is not even popular in the Deep South these days.  I feared we were going to have to restart Reconstruction.  I was preparing to claim to be the reincarnation of General William T. Sherman and engage in some cultural imperialism.

I
was really hoping Smoot could pill off a victory tonight, but by the looks of the numbers so far it looks unlikely. It would have been nice for a D+30 something seat to have a real progressive representative for once.

17, Gay Male, Democrat, NJ-8

Sewell's commercials
They were funny because they played up her connections to Barak and Michelle Obama and said nothing about Davis.

[ Parent ]
Bentley
AP called for Bentley. Matches up with what other outlets are reporting.

Ron Sparks has to be happy
Especially since the two have basically just been attacking each other nonstop and trying to see who could go furthest to the right. This race has the slightest Bentley edge, but, thanks to Byrne not winning the primary, Democrats have a shot.

[ Parent ]
Roby wins
I can't see Barber pulling it out. the only two counties that have not started reporting are Bullock, which she won with 47% in primary, and Geneva, which she won with 51% in primary. She is winning every county except for the very small Conecuh which is finished reporting.

Score one
for electability. Even though Bright is the slight favorite, (he is overwhelmingly personally popular), Roby is more likely to defeat Bright than Barber

Don Chamberlain: most effective use of campaign resources ever
I don't know about the runoff, as he didn't file a report, but for the primary, he raised $93.98, of which $88.48 was from the candidate himself. I don't know who donated the remaining $5.50, but they must be swelling with pride.

I think Alvin green still has that award.
61% with no effort.

Phew... AL State Senate 28 Dem Runoff...
I'm glad Beasley was able to beat Multiple-Party-Switcher Johnny Ford...  Though I was tempted to go and vote in the Republican Runoff (most of the Judge runoffs are on the Rep side), I decided, in the end, to vote in the Dem Runoff, as I would hate to see Ford to get in the State Senate...

Dale Peterson
His record is only 1 for 2 tonight has Barber was crushed.

RIP to NY St. Sen. Thomas Morahan
But now, we'd better frickin' field a candidate in a district where our registration advantage is 45.2-28.7

He was
retiring anyway. According to the NY senate Dems campaign website three Democrats are competing for the nomination.

And that's only our fourth worst failure in that chamber

By the way, as an Idahoan....
what are your observations of the ID-01 race?  Is Labrador making himself visible or is his campaign a flop?

Ad hoc, ad loc and quid pro quo!
So little time, so much to know!

[ Parent ]
Basically I think it's ours to lose
because someone normal like Ken Roberts didn't win.

On the other hand, as a whole, the Panhandle is way different than the rest (i.e. the state with three capitals: Boise, Salt Lake and Spokane), so the news around here may not be the same as down in Boise. And there is the culturally backwards factor ("Teleconferencing is no excuse for not communicating with constitutents." etc.).
