SSP Daily Digest: 5/31 (Morning Edition)

Even the mailman takes off today. But not SSP....

  • AR-Sen: Mitch Berry, the son of retiring Dem Rep. Marion Berry, is stepping up his fight against Bill Halter's purported war on common sense. Berry's PAC, Arkansans For Common Sense, just filed a $150,000 media buy against Halter, bringing their total expenditures in this race to nearly $350K. (J)
  • NV-Sen: Salon notes that hard-charging teabagger Sharron Angle has been handing out her own newspaper-style pamphlet at campaign events, titled "The Angle Examiner." Underneath eye-grabbing headlines like "Reid Waterboarding the Economy" are photos of Angle in various action poses, including one in which she's firing her .44 Magnum, which she calls her "Dirty Harry Hand Cannon." Salon editorializes that "the breathless tone of its writing, and the very un-slick design, makes it seem like one more piece of evidence that Angle may not be quite ready for prime time."
  • Ready or not, Angle is getting some big help in the closing days of her insurgent campaign. The Club for Growth filed a half-million dollar expenditure report with the FEC, the bulk of which is being spent on direct mail and attack ads hitting front-runner Sue Lowden. At the same time, the Tea Party Express has upped their media buys supporting Angle by another $50K. (J)

  • AZ-Gov: Get a load of this tyranny. GOP Gov. Jan Brewer says that she "has removed" state AG Terry Goddard, a Democrat running against her this fall, from defending the state against possible litigation by the federal Department of Justice surrounding the state's "papers please" immigration law. Apparently, Brewer thinks that Goddard is "colluding" with the DoJ after learning that he met with DoJ lawyers shortly before they met with the governor's legal advisors. This is a routine practice for Justice Department attorneys when considering legal action against a state, but Brewer will have none of it. Goddard, for his part, insists that he will be "definitely defending the state" in any challenges to the law. (J)
  • NY-Gov: Ex-Rep. Rick Lazio scored the Conservative Party's endorsement, but he didn't exactly do it in fine fashion. Chairman Mike Long pushed the party convention a week ahead of the GOP confab, in the hopes of pressuring the Republicans to nominate Lazio instead of recent ex-Dem Steve Levy. But this move ruffled quite a few feathers, it seems, and supporters of Levy and ultra-creepbag Carl Paladino conspired to also put Erie County Conservative chair Ralph Lorigo on the ballot as well. This means that if Lorigo sees it through, Lazio could face a contested primary for the Conservative line. That would mean two different primaries for two different parties with two different sets of opponents for Lazio at the same time! I also have to wonder whether Long will also face backlash over his continued meddling in NY-23 as well. Ah, the Republicans: They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
  • CA-36: Not taking any chances, Dem Rep. Jane Harman is out with an incendiary ad against her primary opponent, activist Marcy Winograd. The ad, which began airing on local cable stations and FIOS last Thursday, hits Winograd for wanting to "kill the defense budget" and to "destroy Israel."  Kudos to the Politico's Alex Isenstadt for inquiring about the size of the ad buy, but shame on the Harman campaign for declining to provide details. (J)
  • CA-42: Teabagging accountant Phil Liberatore pumped another $375K of his own cash into his race against GOP Rep. Gary Miller. Liberatore has now spent half a million trying to unseat Miller, who has spent "only" $337K. There are also a couple of Some Dudes in this race. The primary is June 8th.
  • FL-10: Even though the House ethics office cleared Bill Young in the PMA lobbying scandal back in February, a criminal investigation is apparently underway at the Justice Department. (You may recall that several lawmakers were accused of steering defense-related earmarks to PMA clients, in exchange for campaign donations.) Dem Charlie Justice seems to be overplaying his hand here (if he even has one), calling for Young to resign from office.
  • GA-09: Sure, anyone can file a lawsuit, but banks aren't Orly Taitz, and they usually only sue debtors when they mean it. So it's a bit startling to see that a local bank is suing Tom Graves, the leading candidate in the GA-09 runoff, to recover an unpaid $2.25 million business loan. They're also accusing him of fraudulently transferring some property in order to frustrate the bank's collection efforts. This sounds pretty serious, and could be a real game-changer. The second round of this special election is on June 8th, where Graves, a former state rep., faces Lee Hawkins, a former state senator. (Graves led 35-23 in the first round.)
  • ID-01: Walt Minnick just rolled out a list of 100 key supporters across his district, including a bunch of prominent Republican donors and elected officials, like some county commissioners and the former head of the National Cattleman's Beef Association. Whoo-eee!
  • IL-10: Biden alert! The VPOTUS will do a fundraiser for Dan Seals on June 21st in Chicago.
  • NC-08: It's always the sign of a successful campaign when the candidate starts threatening to sue members of his own party for defamation. That's what SSP fave Tim D'Annunzio is doing, claiming that the state GOP chair is spreading lies about him. Oh, and he wants $5 million. God speed, little Timmy!
  • NY-01: Bill Clinton will be doing a $2,400-a-head fundraiser for Rep. Tim Bishop in Manhattan this Thursday, while Henry Kissinger will be doing the same for Republican Chris Cox. (Cox is the grandson of Richard Nixon, who of course was BFF with Kissinger back in the day.) P.S. Note to CQ-Roll Call: There is no "furor" about this dumb Sestak job non-story.
  • SC-02: GOP Rep. Joe Wilson raised an unbelievable amount of cash after his infamous State of the Union outburst, and he's spending at an equally prodigious clip, too. Wilson's pre-primary fundraising report, filed with the FEC, indicates that his campaign brought in $190,000 in a six-week period following the end of March, but he also spent over $450,000 out of his war chest, leaving him with under $1.9 million cash-on-hand. All told, Wilson has spent a whopping $2 million on his re-election campaign already, despite not facing any primary opposition. (J)
  • UT-02: Rep. Jim Matheson scored the backing of the 18,000-strong Utah Education Association teachers union. It so happens that his primary opponent, Claudia Wright, has been a teacher for 30 years.
  • NRCC: A good observation by Steve Benen, who points out that the NRCC has recently begun lowballing expectations. While Republicans had for months been acting as though they were sure to retake the House, NRCC recruitment chair Kevin McCarthy has reduced his oddly specific takeover from 45 to 37 - just short of what the GOP would need for the majority. Benen wonders if the NRCC is playing a deep game here, trying to goad supporters into giving their all, lest they become complacent. But in the wake of PA-12 and other embarrassments in primaries, maybe the Republicans really have dialed back their hopes a bit.

    Quick comments.
CA-36 - Jane Harman's adbuy comes at a pretty inopportune time, because both legs are involved in the Israeli Navy attack early this morning on six ships trying to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid, where they opened fire and in which 10 activists were killed. (Cynthia McKinney was on one of the ships, but she's fine.) I don't know how that plays in America, but there's shades of coming out in favor of offshore drilling right now.

ID-01 - I'm rather curious to see whether Minnick holds on, but not familiar enough with the lay of the land to know whether DavidNYC's being sarcastic or not.

    Israeli attack
Yeah, I don't know how it'll play in America but the sh1t has really hit the fan over here. Ireland's always been one of the most israli critcal states in the west and it's the main news in all news broadcasts. There were alot of Irish on board including a green party senator (but I think he remained in Cyprus).

Could be a headache for alot of israel supporters in congress but watching Fox this morning, it's not getting much air time.  I worried originally for people like Shelly Berkely in NV. It's important to note that they were running a blockade and were armed. The action was legal.

    [ Parent ]
    Legal?
Ah, this isn't the venue for this discussion, since it's not about American elections, but it's interesting to see the difference in reporting.

They were running a blockade, yes, but the media emphasized that the ships were in international waters. Israeli sources claim that the aid workers were armed, but a Navy spokesperson said there was small arms fire before they had reached the flotilla; while a government representative characterized the weapons that were found as "sharp objects". The victims themselves said that the Israeli Navy fired at the ships from a distance (which is where the sounds came from) and kept this up after the white flag was raised.

All of those things cast doubt on the official narrative and the legality of the action, and it'll probably be several days before legality can be worked out, with a large number of complicating factors.

It's gonna be very interesting to see how this plays in the U.S., where domestic politics never seem to stop talking about Israel.

This is absolutely the wrong venue
For a discussion on the Israeli incident. Full stop.

Minnick has proven himself extremely savvy, even getting 50% in a jungle poll against both Ward and Labrador.

    I'd give him better-than-even odds.

But not for the general right?
I mean the primaries for Idaho were only last week and it will probably take some time before voters will be able to vote by absentee right?

    [ Parent ]
    Early voting began May 10
    http://www.mercurynews.com/bre...

California has had a large share of its voters voting by mail for a while, so I'm guessing a large number of votes have been cast already.  If this incident does effect the campaign one way or another the effect will be mitigated a bit because a lot of votes are already cast.

No comment about the impact of the incident off of Gaza
as per the appropriate warning from moderation, but the ad seems audacious, considering the controversial nature of Harman's relationship with AIPAC (of which I will say no more; anyone who wants more coverage should simply do a web search).

Do any subscribers have a sense of how this kind of ad from Harman is likely to play in that district?

I moved out of Jane Harman's district a few months ago
Without commenting on the merits or news or anything outside the political ramifications of this ad, I would say it was be designed to appeal to Democratic Jewish voters, yes? And very pro-Israel non-Jewish Democrats, too, presumably. As to how that'll play in the places she reps: Harman's district is kinda odd.

She represents some funky, diverse (but fairly well-off) beach cities--Venice, the funkiest, along with Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach & Redondo Beach. Potential for backfiring is highest here as religion-baiting would not go over well in communities that pride themselves on tolerance (as Manhattan Beach's gay black mayor, Mitch Ward, will tell you).

Then there's some even wealthier, older (demographically-speaking) districts like Marina del Rey, a small chunk of West LA*, and parts of Torrance (the beach cities also have some folks for whom this might prove true, too) that might have older Jewish voters with "instinctively back everything Israel" permanently implanted in their brains. Wealthy, centrist Jewess Harman is likely to clean up anyway among these voters, so I guess this could be considered "playing to her base."

*Importantly, the 36th is close to, but doesn't encompass, West LA's Orthodox Jewish neighborhood.

There are mixed-race middle and working-class neighborhoods in Lomita, Torrance, West Carson & Wilmington. Probably quite low levels of Jewish population. I doubt this ad would have a large effect here, other than to make people go "Who's Marcy Winograd?" which is actually good for Winograd.

On the whole, without getting into any policy issues (I'm trying, moderators!) I would think this type of ad would be a net negative for Harman.

Disagree. Ad is a net positive for Harman
This ad is a net positive for her. With Israel under attack (both literally and figuratively) ads like this serve to motivate her pro-Israeli base to get out and vote. Especially if she can portray her opponent Marcy Winograd as part of the anti-Israel (or to put better the blame Israel) crowd.

With Obama breaking with the historic US policy towards and taking a very hard (or should I say more European) policy towards Israel I think it is important for Democrats like Harman to show that she disagrees with that approach and motivates pro-Israeli Democrats to the polls to vote for her.

How many pro-Israel Democrats are there?
Both nationally, and in her district?

Or more specifically, how many people would she be able to shore up support from, with this ad?

For what it's worth, this does seem like a more swingy group, given its hawkish stance, and how some Republicans have tried Israel-baiting the Democrats before.

    Comments and questions
AR-Sen: Why does Mitch Berry want to do this?

AZ-Gov: Just goes to prove their usual mindset of suspecting everyone who isn't firmly already on their side.  Yay McCarthyist paranoia.

SC-02: What has Wilson been spending that money on?

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

    addendum for AZ-Gov
Specifically, they seem to assume that everyone will be working for the political interests of whatever side they're on, and using their position to push their issues/stances.  Rather than, y'know, doing their job properly, regardless of their side.

Maybe it's because that's what they are like.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

    Not
sure why Mitch Berry want's to do that. Maybe he wants to venture in politics someday and he thinks it will somehow help him. I am afraid because assuming Halter wins both Berry's could refuse to endorse or endorse Boozman.

    RE: GA 09
The special election run-off is on July 20th (the same day as the primaries) not June 8th. Pretty long time for a run-off campaign but it was an effort to save money by having the election on the same day.

    I don't think that's right.
    AJC:

Graves is running against former state Sen. Lee Hawkins to fill the unexpired term of former U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal, who resigned to focus on his gubernatorial campaign. Regardless of who wins in their June 8 runoff, both are preparing to compete in the July 20 GOP primary for the next term in office.

    Just read
Sharron Angle's "newspaper" check out this tidbit:

"...and en-courage nuclear desalinization plants along the U.S. coastline to provide more sources of water."

I'm all for nuclear power, but only idiots would suggest placing nuclear power plants along the coastline.

    19, Male, Independent, CA-12

    Why?
Nuclear power is an evil plague, but if you do build them, putting them on the coast is where they naturally go due to the superabundance of (non-drinkable) cooling water.

Nixon's western White House is the second closest house to one of the California coastal plants.

    [ Parent ]
and obviously desalinization plants go on the coast
I don't get why they would need to be nuclear though, or why she would think mixing nuclear with making drinking water was a good idea.

Desalinization is an interesting issue, too bad a wingnut had to bring it up.

    [ Parent ]
I think because the coast of California
tends to be near major fault lines. Just a guess here.

"I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Democrat!"
    --  Will Rogers

    [ Parent ]
Yes because you want to build a nuclear power plant as far away from water as possible?
    Roll your eyes here!

I am sure there are a lot of things to criticize Angle for but building nuclear power plants near abundant sources of water is not one of them! (A nuclear power plants kind of needs to built near water.)

Again not the forum for a debate about cleanest form of energy. But Nuclear Power produces no greenhouse gas and the debate still rages as to weather desalination is more environmentally sound way of getting clean water.

Not a bad debate to have out in a public forum. Not sure Ms. Angle is the right person to start that discussion.

sorry to be off-topic - but any diaries about mark kirk's lies/exaggerations?
i read a small article in my local paper about him claiming to win "intelligence officer of the year" in 1999 when he never did...

i came to swing state to get the conclusive word but...not that i can see.

As with Blumenthal I don't think it is that important. Actually, in this case I think too much focus on it could backfire. Kirk's response in that video is very strong IMO.

    I'm sorry, but
But "Dirty Harry Hand Cannon" just sounds so wrong, in so many ways.

Do have to say, though: that's some mighty fine crazy Angle's got there.
