UT-Sen: Bennett Won't Run As Write-In

After publicly mulling the idea of running as a write-in, giving hope for cat fud fans everywhere, unfortunately, Bob Bennett has decided to go quietly into the night after all.

"If I were to do it, it would revive all of those passions and divide the party in the state of Utah," Bennett said, calling the campaign "the nastiest race for a party nomination in the history of Utah."

The fact that his announcement was at NRSC headquarters was a pretty clear tip-off ahead of time that he wasn't going to break away from the party. Bennett didn't endorse anyone, but has a meeting scheduled today with Tim Bridgewater (who faces a primary against Mike Lee, both of whom finished ahead of Bennett at the GOP convention).

Poor Orrin Hatch
If Bennett gets tarred and feathered at the state Republican Convention, they will send Hatch to the electric chair in a few years.

You mean firing squad
It is Utah!

It would be a firing squad...
But Hatch won't have to worry about it since his conviction would be done after 2004....

Seriously, Hatch should be a nervous man if he wants to be reelected.

Hatch has two years' notice, though.
They're not going to catch him off-guard.

[ Parent ]
How will they respond in two years
If Mitt Romney is still in the running (or winning) the R nomination for President at this time in '12?

[ Parent ]
I imagine they won't care
Romney would pretty much pull a Michael Steele and say that it should be resolved within the state convention.  In turn, the wingnuts will rip Hatch to shreds.  If Romney would say something to the effect of "leave Orrin alone", Hatch might be able to survive.  But Romney is pretty spineless, so I don't see that happening.

In regards to Bennett, it doesn't hurt my feelings at all that he will soon be a distant memory and was totally dissed by the Utah Republican convention.  I can't find any redeeming qualities in Bennett.  With Hatch, I guess I have respect for him because he could be a friend to Ted Kennedy, work with Kennedy on legislation, and not be a general right-wing nut like so many others within his party.

I'm not a huge Bennett fan either...
But he did partner with Ron Wyden on a very interesting piece of alternative health care legislation that was a non-starter, but still showed he was at least willing to work with the other side.

[ Parent ]
Thanks for reminding me
I remember that piece of legislation, and on face-value it looks pretty intrinsic on Bennett for his willingness to work with the other side of aisle.  I thought at the time that it was more political posturing made by the Republicans than anything else, but I might be wrong.

I have very little faith that what the Republicans ever do is on the up and up.

Bennett isn't that bad...
...in the sense he is actually willing to work behind the scenes to strike deals and get stuff done.  The problem is that he is a true party loyalist and will follow orders when they are given.  That overrides any bipartisan instincts he has.  Harry Reid wishes he had a few more men like that.

Bennett strikes me as a team player
As I mentioned in another thread, I felt he was too much of a team player to "rebel" over just this.

Kos tweeted last
week IIRC that he'd be scheduling a UT-Sen R2K poll with a write-in Bennet included as a choice in the general election.
Too bad it didn't get finished and published.
If it had shown Bennett leading, maybe it could've changed the narrative (a la what Ras has been doing). And given Bennett something more to ponder before making his decision. Oh well.

is he giving his $$ to the NSRC?
Didn't he have a lot of cash on hand?
