IN-05: Oh crap, Dem nominee is a teabagger

by: BruinKid

OK, who goofed?  Dave Weigel reports that Tim Crawford, the guy who won the Democratic primary earlier this month in IN-05, is a certifiable teabagger who seems to hate everything about Democrats and Obama.

Just look at what he's written on his Facebook page.

So... anti-health care reform, thinks we're all socialists, and a Tenther to boot!

How'd Indiana Democrats let this happen?  Nonpartisan had me convinced Nasser Hanna, an actual Democrat, would be the Democratic nominee.  Instead... we got Crawford, who handily won the primary, 61%-39%.

Ugh.

I'm willing to bet
he won the primary because he has a "normal" name.

I don't understand why people would run under a party label when they have nothing in common with the party.

The silver lining in the cloud in this one is...
...that an IN-05 Democrat is a sacrificial lamb anyway, and at least with this guy no Democrats will blow their money on him when they could spend it more wisely anyway!

Unlike Walt Minnick...

What
about Minnick?

[ Parent ]
He's been endorsed by the Teabaggers and the Club for Growth

Really?
I knew Minnick was relatively conservative for a Democrat, but he's not THAT conservative.  Confusing as to why the CfG and the Tea Party Express would get behind Minnick, although with how ridiculous Vaughn Ward is being, maybe even they've come to their senses.

I'm really thinking about pulling this seat out of the republican takeover category.

Afraid so
Teabagger Endorsement. Club for Growth Endorsement.  100% rating from CfG when the average Democratic rating is 3%?  Good lord.

No
Minnick scored a 100% on the CFG's "RePORK Card". His overall score is actually 53%. The article you linked mentions nothing about an endorsement from the CFG.

Here's the "RePORK Card": http://www.clubforgrowth.org/p...

Look at some of the Republicans with terrible scores. Tom Cole? Peter King? I hope you will not support them.

Here's a link to an article about Minnick's actual score, which is not even the highest in the Democratic Caucus: http://www.politico.com/news/s...

It gives him cover, sure, but there's no endorsement, as of yet.

Also, I find it interesting that you leave out Minnick's endorsements from NARAL and other liberal groups.

Now, the Tea Party Express endorsement is correct. I find that interesting as Palin and her family have been campaigning hard for Vaughn Ward.

Vaughn Ward seems to be somewhat of an idiot
Have a look at this stupid quote from him. If the Republicans manage to lose this House seat again, they're pathetic and need to do some deep reflection.

"I'm not a member of any organized political party, I'm a Democrat!"

A teabagger D v. Dan Burton?
Who will run more to the right? And if I'm reading right, Burton won the primary with 30%. Could Crawford actually win? Is he so far to the right that we'd actually rather have Burton?

Very Republican district, so - highly unlikely

[ Parent ]
Well, this is the district ...
... a few elections ago where Democrats nominated Bob Kern (he might have been calling himself Bobby Hidalgo then), a mentally unstable gay felon -- so they haven't always chosen wisely!

Can Republicans vote in Democratic primaries in IN?
I'm wondering if some inter-party mischief has taken place in this district.

It's possible.
All primaries in Indiana are open, and there are barely any Democrats to speak of who actually live in that district, save perhaps a few unfortunates in North Indy who found themselves just over the line.

[ Parent ]
It's not Republican mischief
All the action is on the Republican side.  Democratic primaries are non-events -- no media, little campaigning at all.  In these cases, people are going to go with the name they have seen on a flyer or yard sign.

[ Parent ]
Heheh.
Seriously, don't worry about it. It's IN-05. Take every cliche about ultra-Republican Midwestern suburbs, magnify it times 10, and take a deep breath. Hell will freeze over before anyone with a D next to their name gets elected in that district. In the meantime, if this guy actually campaigns and meets people, he can hold Burton to a comically low re-elect number for an R +17 district, giving all the more reason for Watermelon Dan to retire and let the teabaggers all rip each others' throats out (metaphorically speaking) trying to win the seat. Again.

For Indianapolis Dems, IN-05 is and always has been a cat fud district that we have no hope of winning, but that provides some pretty hilarious schadenfreude on both sides regardless. Relax and pass the popcorn.

We have no shot here.

Even when
Obama surged in Indiana in 2008, he only won 40% of the vote here.

If not, I'll take sour cream and onion potato chips instead.
