FL-Sen: Muck on Meek

Kendrick Meek has been the squeaky clean one so far in the Florida Senate race, even as Marco Rubio got his halo tarnished by the RPOF's credit card scandal. That's changed a bit with revelations over the weekend:

As U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek championed a proposed biopharmaceutical complex for Liberty City in 2003, his Miami chief of staff received $13,000 from the project's developer to help the aide buy a house, newly released police records show.

The developer, Dennis Stackhouse, is now awaiting trial, accused of stealing nearly $1 million from the failed Poinciana Park project that was supposed to revitalize the blighted Liberty City community. Nothing was ever built.

The police records show that Stackhouse engaged in an elaborate campaign to curry favor with Meek as the builder sought the congressman's help in obtaining federal funding for the project. In addition to helping the aide's house purchase, Stackhouse hired Meek's mother, former U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek, paying her $90,000 in consulting fees and paying for a Cadillac Escalade for her to drive.

Meek twice sought congressional earmarks to benefit the project but has insisted that was unrelated to his mother's work for the developer.

Billionaire primary challenger Jeff Greene, who just got into the Democratic primary a few weeks ago, quickly seized on this in order to get some traction in the race, calling for a House Ethics investigation. The Meek camp quickly fired back, trying to turn the subject back to Greene's pioneering (and disastrous) use of credit default swaps.

It's unclear how big a deal this will wind up being for Meek, who's been struggling to find his footing after Charlie Crist's switch to an independent bid (as seen in the polls, today's Rasmussen being a prime example). With Crist repositioned and sounding many Democratic-sounding notes now, a number of potential backers are sounding ambivalent... or outright gone, in the case of Democratic state Rep. Joseph Abruzzo, who's made clear he's backing Crist. The link also lists a number of other Dems on the Gold Coast who are publicly displaying their ambivalence or worse; a key example is former Rep. Robert Wexler CoS Eric Johnson, who's now about to start working on Crist's campaign. (Wexler himself has yet to endorse Meek, for that matter.)

Of course, not everything's a bed of roses for Crist these days. Crist is still drawing a lot of heat for his decision not to refund campaign contributions to Republican donors, and was heckled loudly about it at the opening of his new Tampa campaign headquarters.

Kos had great analysis on this race today...
When Crist first became an independent, I thought his support would dry up once Democrats started drifting back to Meek. Now it's clear that Crist is intentionally supplementing Meek as the Democratic candidate. What's more, it looks like he's succeeding.

At this point, I'm wondering if the only question is whether Meek is subtly pushed out of the race by at some point Democratic elders.

Whatever else you think about Crist, he's a smart politician. If he does become the de facto Democratic candidate, I think it's his race to lose, given his residual support among Indepedents and moderate Republicans.

The chart used in that Kos diary
tells the tale. http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...
For the past two months, the slope of Crist's line going up is the exact same mirror angle of Meek's line going down. That picture is worth a thousand words.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, he's REAL SMART ...
He managed to turn a 30 point lead into a 30 point deficit. He managed to be on both sides of just about any issue all at the same time. He managed to get run out of his own party, when he was the Mother F&#king GOVERNOR of his state.

If it's his race to lose, I have no doubt he will.

Charlie Crist has let his ego get the better of him.  He has an almost zero chance of being elected,IMO.

If this Meek story is true, put Chiles III in there.  Crist is a joke that will not be taken seriosuly in DC if by any miraculous chance he were to be elected.

[ Parent ]
You're right
What I should have said is that Crist has been smart in the past month. Previous to that, he threw away what should have been a sure thing Senate seat. So, mea culpa.

[ Parent ]
I'm sure Meek is going to get asked to tank

his campaign so Crist can win.  I haven't been impressed that it was more than a warm-up campaign he was waging preparatory to a serious run in '12, anyway.

Let's see what he gets in the bargain.

[ Parent ]
Oh great
This is muckier than than the muck on Alexi. Crist looks pretty good right now.

I'll gladly take Crist as a reverse Lieberman, which is what he'd be except that...
...he'd consummate sticking a fork in the GOP's eye by caucusing with the opposite party, unlike Lieberman who got revenge on us and then caucused with Democrats anyway.

Really, in a year as tough as this one, you declare victory any way you can.  If that means making a de facto quasi-Democrat out of Crist, we have to take it.  In a better year, we'd not settle for this, but in a year like this, we must.

Even without Meek having any personal baggage, I was thinking he easily could be tossed aside as the months go by if Crist remains the only serious challenge to Rubio.  This only makes it that much harder for Meek.

Unless this story turns out to be totally false
I think it's safe to say this is the death knell of Meek's campaign. He's already been languishing well behind in the opinion polls. And what's more, if this story is true, good riddance to Meek as a potentially viable candidate. If I were in Florida, I seriously doubt I'd vote for him if this story is true. And I believe I'm well to the left of most Democrats. In other words - again, IF this story is true - he may have lost most of the non-black liberal Democratic base, and some black voters, too.

So, I guess the question is...
Does this mean Jeff Greene is likely to be the Dem nominee now? And how does that affect the race?

[ Parent ]
If
Greene is the nominee then I think I will root for Crist, assuming he looks like he will probably caucus with the Dems. I don't want to but I just can't image a way I can support Greene.

Yikes, it's hard to imagine Greene
as the Democratic nominee. If I were faced with that choice, and again, if this story is true, I don't know what I'd do.

With friends like these....
Jeez, looks like folks were looking for a reason (really any reason) to dump Meek once it appeared Crist would run as an indy! Even Kos, subtly implied so from his numerous "Crist is done if he runs in the GOP primary" stories, all but begging him to be the Dem's standard bearer. It kinda puts some truth to the idea that Dems care more about winning seats or political office with anyone while the GOP cares about ideological purity. A pox on both houses!

At least wait to see what is going on before jumping overboard at the first sign of trouble. It's a ways before election day and who knows what skeletons Crist or Rubio may have in their closet. I personally didn't think Meek is the strongest candidate (I've said that on here many times), but I'd be opposed to folks just bailing on me the minute they smell smoke. It's reasons like these that make DC Dems play the Dem base for suckers cos they figure they'd fall in line anyway on anything just cos they only care about winning seats with any thing with a D, weak D or fake I-D next to his/her name.

Pan was pretty clear
IF it is true. You have to admit it looks terrible. But we shall see.

[ Parent ]
Oh I agree, but...
I would want to see the as much of the facts first before even commenting on how damaging it could be. Maybe it's just about semantics but I feel there are a lot of folks here who care about beating Rubio than electing Meek and would gladly ride with Crist if his is the train that will get them there. It just seems that stuff that could harm any political campaign is more amplified if you are the lagging candidate than the front runner.

I don't think us commenting
Makes a jot of difference. I also think it is sometimes necessary to favor prudence over ideology. But I haven't had that sense at all leading up to this.

[ Parent ]
I certainly DO care more about defeating Rubio
than electing Meek, and I think every Democrat should feel that way. It's quite an exaggeration to suggest that I'd "gladly ride with Crist," though. He is a very flawed candidate with a very flawed record, and it is quite unclear what he would do as a Senator.

But the fact is, people are faced with choices between flawed candidates all the time, and it's really a cost/benefit analysis: How bad is Candidate A, who is most or 2nd-most likely to win? How much less bad is Candidate B likely to be? And does Candidate C have any chance to win? Finally, comparing the odors of corruption or/and malfeasance surrounding each of the candidates, which ones smell worst? With any luck, these things will become somewhat clearer in the coming weeks and months, giving the voters a reasonably educated choice.

Is
it still possible to get someone else to run in the primary? Lawton Chiles is still thinking of running for Governor. Surely we can get someone better than Meek if this is true. If this is true Crist will likely be our de-facto nominee. As a political junkie this is going to be a fun race to watch .

Proud member of the Indiana Democratic Party from IN-9.

From the beginning Meek was lame lame lame
But no one has gotten in, largely because no Dem could beat Crist.

But a three candidate race... really, anybody could win, so why don't we get someone like Chiles?

Opportunities like this (think of it like the House seat in Florida) don't come along very often  A solid (and leftish) Democrat has a great chance to win this race with 40% of the vote, so why doesn't anybody want to try?

[ Parent ]
tommy, there's nothing special about Chiles......
Just as Pete Domenici, Jr., lagging in a distant 3rd in this year's NM-Gov primary, how far a famous name gets you.

Chiles has never been elected to anything, and U.S. Senate in a huge state like Florida is an imposing task.

A serious candidate is one with serious proven, even if only at the local level, or otherwise indisputable vote-getting ability.

But we have a tough year for Democrats, it looked for a long time like Crist was the presumptive Senator, and our bench in Florida is disturbingly thin.  All that adds up to our few good choices refusing to give up a safe seat wherever they are for a tough statewide federal race.

like Rep Kathy Castor
Betty Castor's daughter and a possible replacement candidate for Bill Nelson should he choose not to run for reelection as there have been some rumors.

[ Parent ]
No
the filing deadline for federal races has passed. State-level races are still pending.

[ Parent ]
Well
that sucks. That leaves us with either Greene or Crist to support. I'm just hoping this is not true.
