SSP Daily Digest: 3/15 (Morning Edition)

Mon Mar 15, 2010 at 8:00 AM EDT

  • CA-Sen: No one does weird-ass like Carly Fiorina, who has another web video out that hails from the land of the bizarre.
  • CO-Sen: Seventh CD Rep. Ed Perlmutter has endorsed Sen. Michael Bennet over Andrew Romanoff in the Dem primary.
  • FL-Sen: It looks like Marco Rubio is finally starting to come in for some serious scrutiny. The St. Pete Times has a lengthy examination of the corporate money that has flowed Rubio's way, and the irregularities which have riddled his campaign finance reports.
  • IL-Sen: Alexi Giannoulias says he's going to return all campaign contributions from, as Politico puts it, "accused bank fraudster Nick Giannis and his family."
  • IN-Sen: Ah, this is good. Dan Coats is trying to run as hard as he can against the bailout... but back in 2008, he was lobbying the government on behalf of a hedge fund which owned 80% of Chrysler - a huge recipient of bailout funds. (He didn't do a very good job, it seems, considering that the fund, Cerberus, has its equity stake wiped out.) As Texas Dem astutely noted the moment Coats rumors started flying, "Usually retired senators get rich in some unseemly way that makes them unelectable in the future." Sure looks like the case here.
  • NY-Sen-B: I hope all those Democrats who supported Mike Bloomberg over the years are happy: The NYT has an in-depth look at Bloombo's hostility to Kirsten Gillibrand, and all the candidates he has tried to push into running against her. The latest is his own girlfriend, Diana Taylor. The Times fails to find any rational reason for why His Bloominess has chugged so much haterade, but devtob points out that they ignored a key item: Bloombo was a big backer of Caroline Kennedy, who of course was snubbed in favor of Gillibrand.
  • RI-Sen: Don't look to retiring Dem Rep. Patrick Kennedy to share any of his spoils with the DCCC. Calling his decision not to seek another term in the House more of a "sabbatical" than a retirement, Kennedy says he plans to transfer his $500K campaign purse into an interest-bearing account, just in case he should need it for a Senate campaign someday. This is total bullshit. (Thanks to SSPer Andrew for this one.) (JL)
  • ID-Gov: Dem Keith Allred has made it official. Allred, a former Harvard professor, had spent five years running a non-partisan "citizens group" called The Common Interest which he left to pursue a gubernatorial run.
  • MI-Gov: Virg Bernero locked down another big union endorsement: the AFL-CIO took a vote, and it was "overwhelming" (their words) in Bernero's favor. The United Auto Workers union, itself a member of the AFL-CIO, had already gotten behind Bernero, but now the entire umbrella organization (which also includes AFSCME, IBEW and AFT) is doing so. Bernero's been running exactly the sort of populist campaign his supporters would have hoped, lately proposing that Michigan establish a state-run bank, modeled after the Bank of North Dakota.
  • NM-Gov: Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez won the support of 47% of the delegates at the state GOP convention this past weekend, while former NM Republican Party chair Allen Weh pulled in 26%. Pete Domenici, Jr. took less than 5%, but still plans to file petitions to get on the ballot. Because Martinez and Weh got over 20%, they only have to file half as many signatures, but as Heath Haussamen points out, no candidate who hasn't scored 20% at the convention has ever come back to win the nomination.
  • OH-Gov: A voluminous auditor's report on the demise of Lehman Brothers was published last week, documenting all of the company's shady financial practices which led to its doom. Why does this matter to the Ohio governor's race? John Kasich was a managing partner at Lehman for several years, right up until the bitter end in 2008. Ted Strickland is putting some pointed questions to Kasich, whose response so far has been extremely feeble.
  • FL-08: Sarah Palin's gotten mixed up in the race to take on Rep. Alan Grayson, firing some broadsides at the Democrat during a recent trip to Orlando. Grayson did not let this challenge go unanswered.
  • KY-03: Tacked on to a Louisville mayoral poll, SUSA included a sort of unusually-worded question about Dem Rep. John Yarmuth's re-elects. They asked voters if they would vote for or against Yarmuth "no matter who else is on the ballot," with a not sure "until I know who else is on the ballot" option. Yarmuth scored 27-23-48. It still seems that Yarmuth's only challenger so far is a dude who owns a bunch of Pizza Huts.
  • NY-14: EMILY's List has finally done something right: They're endorsing Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a longtime advocate for women's issues, in her primary fight against Some Dude Reshma Saujani.
  • NY-23: After months of sounding pretty serious about a bid, state Assemblyman Will Barclay has decided to pass on a race against Dem Rep. Bill Owens. Barclay's exit greatly improves the chances of Club For Growth nutter Doug Hoffman in the GOP primary, where his main rival now appears to be investment banker Matt Doheny, who lost the special election nomination to Dede Scozzafava last fall. (JL)
  • OK-05: The Republican primary to succeed Mary Fallin in the House just gets bigger and bigger. State Rep. Shane Jett is now the sixth candidate in a field that includes state Rep. Mike Thompson, former state Rep. Kevin Calvey, and Some Other Dudes. (JL)
  • IL-Lt. Gov: The 38 members of the IL Dem central committee will hold interviews with prospective candidates around the state next week and then pick a replacement Lt. Gov. nominee on March 27.

    Yarmuth
There are a bunch of nobodies running against him -- the filing deadline passed a while back. The Pizza Hut guy is probably the most likely nominee, as he can potentially self-fund (although he hasn't yet).

Reshma Saujani is many things ...
    I didn't say she was a dude
I said she was Some Dude. She has no public profile, no prior elective experience, and isn't even a self-funder. That qualifies for Some Dude status at SSP.

    [ Parent ]
    But...
She's Some Dudette -- what is EMILY's List doing getting involved in a primary between two pro-choice women? They don't even have the fig leaf they did in the Steve Cohen/Nikki Tinker primary, where their endorsed candidate, however anti-Semitic her campaign was, was at least a women. What the hell is going on over there?

    [ Parent ]
I've heard lots of theories ...
... that this could be a proxy war for Hillary/Obama bitterness or Gillibrand/not-Gillibrand.

    [ Parent ]
    Interesting
I searched Google News for Reshma Saujani and this very SSP diary is the #4 hit already!
    The first return was:
Reshma Saujani Breakfast Fundraiser Brings Out Big Female Backers

This may get to be an interesting primary. And no matter what happens we'll keep a PVI D+26 district.
Usually when running against an incumbent, a challenger must first convince the voters that the incumbent deserves to be fired/replaced, and then secondly that you're the person they should put in.
I don't see what her arguments are on why Carolyn Maloney should be replaced, yet.

    question for SSP community
Has anyone researched whether second-time candidates do better than they did the first time around?

In a bunch of Iowa House districts the GOP is running the same candidates the Democrats beat in 2008. I get that 2010 is an off-year election, so Dem turnout may be lower, and the atmosphere generally is not so good for Dems now, but I'm still surprised the Republicans didn't recruit new candidates for some of these districts.

Just curious about what research is out there.

Crisitunity had a post dealing with repeat House candidate performance
Here. The contrast in performance between male and female candidates seems very odd.

Does it have anything to do with the numbers
The one you gave goes [SSP URL]/6579/[diary, etc.].  This diary (the digest) has 6579.  I noticed my most recent diary was something like 6509.  Maybe you're just putting in the wrong numbers.  Are you copying the entire URL or just doing "/[diary name]"?  That may screw it up.

    More on possible NY-29 candidates
First, it looks like Patterson is looking to call a special election ASAP, whatever that means, ref http://www.democratandchronicl...

    also

    http://www.13wham.com/news/loc...

Assemblyman David Koon of Fairport, Brighton Town Supervisor Sandra Frankel, Canandaigua Mayor Ellen Polimeni are still names in the discussion.

    snip

Democratic Chair Joseph Morelle hinted at it in this D&C article:

Morelle said Democrats also are looking at non-traditional candidates with no background in holding elected office.

These "non-traditional" names include David Nachbar, a former Bausch and Lomb HR exec, and Mary Wilmot, a Patterson regional director for the area.

    Grayson is nuts.
That e-mail was incredible.  Stupid, and over the top, but incredible nonetheless.

    There are some days
There are some days when I'm glad I sent Grayson twenty bucks, and there are days when I am a bit ashamed of having done so. This is one of those glad days. Seriously, that takedown was so awesome, I'm having trouble picking a favorite line, although these are probably the front-runners:

"Palin, the former half-term Governor, current-nothing and future-even-less, charmed the all-Republican audience with her folksy folksiness and her homespun homespunnery."

"Grayson added that Palin deserved credit for getting through the entire hour-long program without quitting."

"Grayson observed that Palin is the most-intelligent leader that the Republican Party has produced since George W. Bush."

""I look forward to an honest debate with Governor Palin on the issues, in the unlikely event that she ever learns anything about them," Grayson added.

Seriously. Epic. Read it. I have to say, we could do a hell of a lot worse for our in-House firebrand than Grayson, whose balls are going to need their own zip code soon.

Kansan by birth, Californian by choice, and Gay by the grace of God.

    [ Parent ]
    Honestly
I do agree that there are some days that I feel that Grayson is our Bauchmann but most days, like this one I am proud to have him in Congress. He is a current congressman is with balls and that in it's self is very rare. Democrats are always easily defeated and god forbid some one disagrees with us we try to compromise to death. Grayson tells it like it is and for that reason he is one of my top 10 favorite politician list.

    17, Gay Male, Democrat, NJ-8

    [ Parent ]
Ive always LOATHED the Grayson-Bachmann comparison
As someone who until just very recently considered Bachmann his representative (college messes with constituency), I really hate the comparison.  I fully recognize my seeming hypocrisy on this, but Grayson's mouthiness comes from wit and intelligence.  Bachmann's comes from retardation of the brain and mouth.

    [ Parent ]
    you're correct
The people who casually lump together Grayson with Bachmann are just being incredibly lazy.

    [ Parent ]
    I disagree

From a purely electoral viewpoint, Grayson and Bachmann are arguably similar in that their willingness to say, um, things, makes them more vulnerable to a challenge. Granted, there are differences (Grayson would be a wobbly incumbent anyways, given the slight R-lean of his district), but his verbosity certainly gives him a bigger profile to target than that of, say, Suzanne Kosmas. In Bachmann's case (or Joe Wilson's!) would we even consider them vulnerable if they weren't going around yelling nonsense?

However, it could also be said that some voters are more likely to support a Grayson or Bachmann for their decisiveness and directness. Even if what Bachmann advocates is crazy, it's probably not difficult even for a low-information voter in her district to find out what she advocates or believes.

On the basis of their styles or approaches, yeah, the Grayson/Bachmann comparison isn't fair. Bachmann just makes things up while Grayson tends to be grounded in fact, even if his style in presenting those facts is decidedly hostile.  Thank you, PolitiFact!

I hope the links work this time.

Don't you mean Grayson is one fry short of a Happy Meal.....
Grayson is an embarrasment. This kind of juvenille stuff is what you expect from some meaningless college political club and NOT from a sitting US Congressman.

While everyone laughs at what Grayson writes the reality is that the souring of the discourse Grayson encourages hurts the work the Dems are trying to get done in Washington.

    Yes
He should grow a yellow streak down his back and hide under his desk, as most Democrats do in the face of Republican attacks.

This is a problem in itself
When people can't see the difference between extremes. You can be partisan without being a prick.

    [ Parent ]
    I don't mind a few jabs.
I don't think making a humorous remark or two or three makes one a prick, though this e-mail goes a bit too far.

But I like it solely because there's so much of it coming from the other side, that it's nice to have balance.  Is it good for political discourse?  No.  But is it going away?  Nope.

    [ Parent ]
    Oh I agree
I just don't like it when people can't (or won't) differentiate between black and white.

    [ Parent ]
    Psh
    Fuck Sarah Palin.

I wont defend everything he has said, but he can attack Sarah Palin all he wants in any manner he wants.  She is a complete embarrassment and I cannot believe there are people in America stupid enough to believe the trite, retarded shit she peddles.

Yes, Ive said "retarded" a lot this thread.  But there is no other way to describe what Sarah Palin plans to do this country, retard it into 3rd world-ness.  Ugh, GO GRAYSON!  If he werent rich as hell, I'd be sending him a $20.

    [ Parent ]
    I
share the Anthony Weiner's view on Grayson, which is that he is one fry short of a happy meal. I agree with Grayson on most things but his problem is communication, like he could find a better way to discredit a woman than calling her a K Street whore.

Proud member of the Indiana Democratic Party from IN-9.

Yeah Grayson is quite ott sometimes.
I'm in the minority here but I'm not a fan.

    [ Parent ]
    Could you imagine?
Alan Grayson debating Sarah Palin?  Oh my lord, there would be nothing left for the audience to gasp at by the end of it.  If those two were ever nominated for president by their respective parties, I could see an indy winning the white house because who would be able to stomach either of them as president?  Not me.

Do you mean on style or policy?
Grayson's policy positions seem pretty mainstream libertarian liberal policies to me, though I may have missed something.

I meant more style than substance
If you really wanted a ridiculous debate on policies, then you're looking at something along the lines of say, Michelle Bachmann vs Dennis Kucinich.

    23, Male, Democrat, OH-13

    [ Parent ]
    I've voted for Kucinich before
in Presidential primaries, because I agree with a lot of his stated opinions, but he has lost me with his numerous votes against important Democratic legislation that wasn't 100% Holy Writ to his warped way of thinking. Years ago, when Congresswoman Maloney voted against Clinton's first budget without providing an alternative, I wrote a letter to her lambasting her for nihilism. Legislators have to run the country, so my comment about Kucinich is: Nihilism is unacceptable in a legislator. Opposing everything because it's not exactly what you want is irresponsible. And yes, that makes him functionally a great deal like a Republican.

Threatening to withhold their ballot line from people voting no on HCR. Awesome. I would go further and withdraw DCCC support.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/...

    Good
Hopefully this will have an effect of some kind.

    [ Parent ]
Except the DCCC is primarily an incumbant
protection unit.  I can't see them withdrawing support for anyone sort of perhaps a serious criminal investigation.

    [ Parent ]
    They have to do something
I don't think Obama offering to visit will wash. They won't even appear with him for his recent speeches.

    [ Parent ]
    Becareful what you wish for...
The Working Families Party is basically threatening to "Teabag" Democrats in New York who don't vote their way on healthcare.

Please remeber that the WFP is a third party in New York. What they are talking about is runnign a 3rd Party candidate against sitting Democratic Congressman in key swing districts.

Scott Murphy barely survived "Panic at Tedisco". How do you think he would fare running for re-election with a 3rd party labor backed candidate soaking up a good share of the protest vote? Or Mike Arcuri who faces a tough re-election? Bill Owens without WFP support probably means a Congressman Doug Hoffman.

Also keep in mind New York doesn't have the sole loser rule other states do. So WFP could back candidates in the Dem primary who could lose to the sitting congressman then still keep running and siphoning off votes in the general.

    If HCR doesn't pass
They are likely toast anyway. Have to find leverage somewhere.

    [ Parent ]
    It's a good threat
Would you prefer they didn't whip votes?

I'd rather congressmen lost because they voted against healthcare, it passed and the WFP ran against them than that congressmen lost because healthcare failed.

    Khazei
Second that.  There was a brief time before the primary when I thought he was gaining traction (I was out doing non-electoral door-knocking and found his supporters to be the most vocal and visible bunch), and was pretty pleased by the idea.  That kind of support could pay off for him in a longer primary campaign without such a clear frontrunner.

What I like about the idea of him in 2012 is that it changes the nature of the race from insurgent vs. state machine to two different brands of change-themed rhetoric, of which I;m pretty sure Khazei's would play much better.

My bad, I also thought you meant Deval Patrick.

honestly I personally don't think Patrick Kennedy is going to jump at the senate so quickly. Running against Scott Brown will take much more effort than waiting for a seat in RI to open up, and Patrick's mental health is such that it's unclear whether he's ready for the hardest campaign of his life. Personally I would like to see him just take a few years off of politics to set his life in order, and I think there is a possibility he will do that.

    The
Louisville mayoral poll is actually pretty interesting. It confirmed my fears that Tandy is a leading candidate (he's a horrible Council Pres.) yet surprised me that Fisher is doing so well. If Fisher wins then I think he would probably not run for a second term and instead run for Senate. It could be the winning combination, he would have the Jeff County vote sealed up and would use his personal wealth to blanket the rest of the state with an add buy. I am actually supporting King, but as long as it's not Tandy.
