TX-Gov: Medina Surge Dwindles, Perry Poised to Win Runoff

PPP (pdf) (2/19-21, likely voters, 2/4-7 in parentheses)

Rick Perry (R-inc): 40 (39)
Kay Bailey Hutchison (R): 31 (28)
Debra Medina (R): 20 (24)
Undecided: 9 (10)

Rick Perry (R-inc): 52
Kay Bailey Hutchison (R): 35
Undecided: 13

Rick Perry (R-inc): 55
Debra Medina (R): 36
Undecided: 9
(MoE: ±5.2%)

Bill White (D): 59 (49)
Farouk Shami (D): 12 (19)
Undecided: 18 (24)
(MoE: ±4.9%)

PPP has another look at the primary fields in the Texas governor's race, with election day fast-approaching on March 2. Most notably, they find that Debra Medina's surge, which they were the first to show a few weeks ago, seems to have peaked and eased off. A lot of that, one would expect, is probably a result of her 9/11 truther inclinations having come out via a sandbagging from Glenn Beck, of all places. There's a corresponding gain for Kay Bailey Hutchison, suggesting that there was a chunk of not-voting-for-Perry-under-any-circumstances voters who liked Medina's freshness but switched to the insidery KBH once Medina's kookiness came to the surface. Although the race looks to be headed to a runoff anyway, Rick Perry looks poised to win against either opponent. (Chris Cillizza has a thoughtful piece today on what went wrong with the once-promising KBH campaign. Shorter version: KBH's lack of an overriding reason to fire Perry (other than "it's my turn") and her focus on genteel general election themes in a primary with a red-meat-hungry base.)

Waiting in the wings for Perry is Democratic former Houston mayor Bill White, who looks to be building support (as Farouk Shami's novelty wears off). White is clearly gearing up for an expensive general, and has been going nuts on the fundraising front, just releasing numbers indicating that he raised $2.2 million in the most recent reporting period (ending Feb. 20), leaving him with $5.4 million CoH.

PPP Poll
The PPP only shows that a runoff is eminent.  Conservatives have the upper hand and will determine who will be in the runoff.  If you want to ensure the most conservative candidates are in, vote Medina.

I know Debra personally, and she is NOT a truther.  Here is a recent interview on the topic.  http://www.bit.ly/bt8W1M

Go to her web site and find out more about her.  Don't listen to rumors and spin, do your own research.  http://medinafortexas.com

I'll second that.
It was a nice mid-day chuckle.

Medina is a maniac

A quick google search will put Jennifer Asper as highly involved with the Medina campaign.
She is clearly on this site boosting a republican candidate.
That being said, this cannot be a great sign of competence from the Medina campaign.  What could they possibly be accomplishing by posting in the comments threads of virtually every political website that pops up with Medina on it.  This is amateurish at best.
Even though she is boosting for a republican candidate and saying to vote for her to ensure a conservative victory, we should leave her account open just to see what sort of crazy stuff we can get out of their campaign, no?

NO!
Or I mean yes!?  I dunno, Im not English, Im American, but I agree nonetheless, :)

[ Parent ]
Why
the hell would she leave her name? I mean even without it you could tell she worked for Medina, but still it's like she thinks members SSP are stupid or something.

Proud member of the Indiana Democratic Party from IN-9.

I'm glad she left her name.
The post seemed to me like coming from a campaign worker, so I'm not surprised.  At least there was no attempt at hiding that fact.

Oh sure, let's have some fun . . .
What positions of Debra's are so attractive that I, or any of the other Texas Democrats would want to vote for her?

I am interested in allowing the state government to function properly with dedicated public servants, coopering WITH the federal government, enforcing safety (gun) laws, and working on creating a clean energy future that relies less on oil and more on solar and wind, cleaning up port of Houston, and instituting more public transportation options meaning bike paths, rail, and buses that reach into the suburbs.

How can Medina help me?

*Look before you leap next time. This is an open Democratic site. We're all pretty much White supporters.

Duh, I know exactly why you should support Medina
Her dumb ass as the GE nominee means a much easier win for White as Governor.  :)

Seriously, if we lose an overall total of 5 gubernatorial seats but we win TX, Ill be happy nonetheless; winning TX and getting creamed everywhere else will be reason enough for me to celebrate on election night.  Gaining 3-4 House seats AND getting to veto any plan we dont like is pretty dope.  And since TX is my 2nd home, I may even throw in a contribution to win this race.

On the other hand
It IS an open primary, and it might be worth some laughs to see just how crazy the Texas Republican party really is.

LOL
Jennifer, if you are looking to get votes this isn't the place. We are a progressive blog, there are some republicans here, but I don't think we have any in Texas. Also don't put your name, I googled you and instantly found that you worked for Medina within a second. Wow I was SOOOOOOO surprised!

Hey, Thanks Jennifer!
You should really check out RedState or Foxnews.  Almost all of the bloggers on this site have brains, so unfortunately for you the Medina cries won't do you any good here.

Question
Can White use the money he raised for the Senate race in his run for Governor?  Or is that money lost to him now?

The Crolian Progressive: as great an adventure as ever I heard of...

White must raise seperate money
White is welcome to return money earned toward his Senate race to his donors, but he can't use the money for a gubernatorial bid.

Fundraisin' Machine
The $5.4 million CoH figure is pure gubernatorial, though, since he switched awhile back and has been pouring cash like a waterfall into that account ever since.

And with Perry looking likely to emerge battered from the primary, and with KBH's moderate base pissed off and the anti-Perry vote as strong as ever, I'm liking White's chances more and more by the day.

Wow
He raised over $6 million for the Senate race, so that means he's raised nearly $12 million in less than a year.  The only other Democrat who's fundraising at that pace is Jerry Brown, and he's got decades of national connections that he can draw on.  Where is White getting all this money?

The Crolian Progressive: as great an adventure as ever I heard of...

[ Parent ]
I'm assuming if he was required to fundraise seperately
He just called donors and said "Would you mind if I switched your donation to my gubernatorial campaign?"

[ Parent ]
Let this be a lesson to other Texas Democrats
Four things you need to run a competitive statewide campaign in this ginormous state.

1. Money
2. Name Recognition
3. More Money
4. Even More Money.

Perry v. Medina
I was hoping for a Perry v. Medina run off.  That would be a right-wing conservative run-off for the record book!  Bill White has a true shot and picking up the Texas Governorship in a year which has already been called for the Republicans would be big for the Democrats.

That would be bad
It would make Perry an establishment candidate, and bring many moderates back to him.

Perry defeats KBH, or Medina defeats KBH... those are the two best scenarios for Team Blue (aside Medina beats Perry which just ain't gonna happen).
