Fun with Utah, entertaining map

So Utah gains a seat, having no clue about Utah Politics I decided to make a district as ridiculously large as possible while keeping the deviation of population as low as possible.  I knew that most of the population in Utah was around Salt Lake City and the Provo area, but I had no idea it was that concentrated.

CD-01:  Blue deviates from the average district population with +7
CD-02:  Green deviates the least from the district average with -6 people
CD-03:  Purple deviates the most from the district average which is -26 people
CD-04:  I admit that the Red district is packed with people to make it larger.  +25 people from the district average :p

I think CD-04 may be geographically one of the largest not-at-large districts

Not one of the largest
THE biggest non at large district.  That district has to be a good deal bigger than NV-02

NV-2 is bigger
In fact, NV-2, at over 105000 square miles, is bigger than the entire state of Utah, which is about 85000 square miles.

Utah
The Republican state legislature would never draw a map like this. It would give Matheson a district that voted for Obama and the republicans in the past have said that all districts should have some urban and rural areas. I think thats just their excuse to make Mathesons district (which was based entirely inside Salt Lake County when he was first elected in 2000) as republican as possible. There is an effort to get an independent redistricting commission initiative on the 2010 ballot. If that passes I could see a independent commission drawing a map like this since it is best way to maintain communities of intrest. In 2006 when it looked like the DC vote bill might pass and Utah drew a 4 district map the Democrats proposed a map similar to this but with the republicans holding big margins in the state legislature it didnt go anywhere.

Holy shit
this is hilarious.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

Wonder what the PVI's are for these districts
I'll bet the blue 1st district is deavily democratic and would elect a liberal like Rocky Anderson.

Actually, no
Salt Lake City is in the most northern part of Salt Lake County, but the blue district seems to be in the center of the county. But yes, your point holds in that a compact district based in SLC is likely to be at least around D+4.

Results for districts

I made this map a few months ago but never got around to writing a diary. There are a few differences between the two maps but I did calculate the results for mine.

District 1: Obama 32.8 - McCain 64.4
District 2: Obama 54.1 - McCain 43.2
District 3: Obama 21.6 - McCain 75.2
District 4: Obama 27.1 - McCain 69.6

Could Matheson win in CD-1?
I believe that Bishop lives in Box Elder Co, so he would be in CD-4.

Matheson
Yes Bishop would live the new 4th and Chaffetz would actually live in his own district now. Bush won Mathesons district 66-31 in 2004 while Matheson won with 54.8% in 2004. So I would imagine that Matheson could win the new 1st. I think Matheson could win because he already represensts some of the most conservatives areas in Utah. The Matheson name is already known statewide from his father being governor, his brother running for governor in 2004, from him serving 9 years in congress, and all of Utah is one media market.
