NY-23: Club For Growth Poll Points to Three-Way, Scozzafava Hammered From Both Sides in New Ads

Basswood Research for the Club For Growth (9/17, likely voters):

Bill Owens (D): 17

Dede Scozzafava (R): 20

Doug Hoffman (C): 17

Undecided: 45

(MoE: ±5.7%)

The Club For Growth seems ready and eager to jump into the fray in upstate New York after releasing this poll showing their homeboy Doug Hoffman in spitting distance of Scozzfava. The results are even more optimistic for Hoffman than those of Hoffman’s own polling (which had Scozzafava ahead by 30-19, with 20% going to Democrat Bill Owens). Both polls, with their fat MoEs (and in this case, a single-day sample), appear to have been done on the cheap, though. The fact that the Club For Growth appears to be ready to throw down must be music to the DCCC’s ears here.

Both party committees are up on the air with ads, but the NRCC has made the bigger investment: $120K vs. the DCCC’s $55K. But Team Blue is getting an assist from Hoffman, who’s up on the air with a new ad hammering Scozzafava from the right. Both the DCCC’s and Hoffman’s spots are available here:

  1. that Scozzafava has been put on the defensive really early in the campaign. She doesn’t have deep pockets like Scott Murphy so she can’t immediately hit back. Politico sends word that her 3rd quarter fundraising report is going to be lackluster at best.

  2. of the vote, I think Scozzafava’s path to victory is pretty difficult.  It’s hard to see many Democrats being won over by him, compared to Republicans, so he only serves to drain Republican votes.

  3. Up is down and vice versa. Prediction – all three are gonna end up in the 30’s and Dede in last place.

  4. Owens needs to run a positive message, let Hoffman and Dede beat each other up, drive up their negative ratings, and win because the conservative faction is split.

I’d like for Owens to drift to the left a bit so he can differentiate himself from Dede and Hoffman.  I know many of you believe that Dede might be better than Owens, but the GOP party will control Dede to the point she cannot vote her own way.  I doubt if Dede will be a better rep for us than Owens.  Owens is far from perfect, but if he can win this race, I think we all will be better off.

  5. Is the Hoffman ad actually on the air?  I read somewhere last night, wish I could remember where, that Hoffman produced and is circulating the ad online but is asking for money on his web site to put it on the air.  If what I read is right, that means no one’s seeing it yet.  Hopefully the CfG nuts will get their people to give some bucks and Hoffman will be able to get this up in the district.

  6. and is able to successfully paint Scozzafava as a liberal Repub and himself as the only anti-Obama candidate, I fear that he can win this race outright, much like Jim Buckley did in the NY-Sen race in 1970.
