FL-Sen, FL-10: Young Turns Down Senate Appointment

It looks like ol' C.W. isn't buying what Charlie Crist is sellin'. From the St. Petersburg Times:

We should have known when U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young showed up to his interview with Charlie Crist in tennis shoes and an untucked polo shirt. He won't be applying to fill Mel Martinez's unexpired term.

"I have the best job in the world now, and I work for the best people in the world. I would not want to leave in the middle of a term. I'm not a quitter," said Young, 78, who has been Crist's congressman for most oif the governor's life. "Truth of the mattter is I can do far more for Florida and Pinellas county where I am than if I took a different job."

Young still refuses to say whether or not he'll run for a 21st term in 2010, but he sure doesn't sound like a guy who wants to hang up his spurs just yet.

If he plans to beat Charlie Justice
he ought to let his fundraisers know soon.  I'd be extremely surprised if Young does run again.

Charlie
If Charlie wants to beat this guy he ought to start his fund raising as well. if my memory serves me correctly he didnt pull a lot of do last quarter.

I think he will retire
But honestly, who would want to finish a forty year career in Congress with an 18-month long stint as a lame duck Republican in the current Senate? It would be kind of like changing high schools in May. I don't blame him for wanting to stay in the House for a little while longer though, even if he doesn't run again.

Is Young explicitly dissing Palin the quitter here?
Am I the only one who thought of Palin when I read the quotation:

"I would not want to leave in the middle of a term. I'm not a quitter," said Young.

What's his deal?
Doesn't he realize that only quitters finish out their terms?

Young
He definitely doesnt strike me as a 'Palin Republican' so Im not at all shocked if he took a jab at her.

Any chance the
senate seat will just go vacant until 2011, thus giving the republicans one less vote. It doesn't seem like Crist can find anyone who the seat.

When pigs fly
That's all I'll say.

It is irrelevant really
We still need 60 votes to break filibusters, and no serious legislation is in danger of getting a majority.
