FL-Sen, FL-10: Bill Young Being Considered for Senate Appointment

by: James L.

One door closes, another opens. After Lincoln Diaz-Balart put the kibosh on his Senate appointment, the latest word is that near-octogenarian and Tampa Bay-area congressman Bill Young is under consideration for the appointment:

RPOF chairman Jim Greer just confirmed that longtime Congressman C.W. Bill Young of Indian Shores is among those being considered to fill U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez's seat for the remainder of the term.

Young could be an ideal choice for Gov. Charlie Crist, given his Tampa Bay roots and his respect and clout on the Hill. But Young's move to the Senate could put what is arguably the state's most competitive congressional seat up for grabs.

No word yet on Young's interest, but this would make a lot more sense for a guy who's both long in the tooth and facing his most competitive re-election campaign in eons from state Sen. Charlie Justice. And if Young did decide to cap off his career with a Senate hoedown, his open House seat would likely be the site of a huge special election battle. It's about as closely-divided at the partisan level as they come; Gore won the district by 2% in 2000, but the area went for Bush by two points four years later. Last November, Obama carried the district by a 51-47 margin.

UPDATE: A couple more items off the Florida Senate appointment wire: Ex-Rep. Clay Shaw says that "my phone's not ringing", essentially signaling that Crist is not interested in giving him the job. Meanwhile, the St. Pete Times gives a rundown of the pros and cons of the major choices under consideration.

Like you said a couple of days ago,
I don't think the FL-GOP rabble would ever let Crist live down "Representative Charlie Justice (D-St. Petersburg)".

I don't think it was me who said that
But that's still a good point. However, maybe Young is going to retire this cycle, anyway.

It makes more sense than a Diaz-Balart. That's for sure
Really, who would end an ongoing congressional career for... Nothing?  Young would be ending his because he's done anyways... It makes sense.  There's no other reason to go to the senate just to leave 12 or so months later.

Indeed.
LDB really seems like a more likely candidate against Nelson in 2012. In a year where Dem resources will be stretched extremely thin, he might even win.

[ Parent ]
Bill Nelson has become a strong candidate
over the years, it would take a 1994 scenario to possibly take him out. But Nelson losing in 2012 is out of the question with Obama on the ballot.

[ Parent ]
Depends whether Obama is getting re-elected
If he is than will be a buffer to the difficult battleground that year. If not then the senate will be a bloodbath.

[ Parent ]
Obama not winning in 2012
would probably mean we lose MO, VA, possibly open seat WI, OH possibly, open HI possibly with Lingle, possible open NM, and MT.  CA should stay ours if Feinstein retires.

And if there are any surprise retirements, that only adds.

Absolutely agree
Way, way too soon to know what will happen in 2012. Hell, too soon to accurately predict 2010. Dont get me wrong, the GOP has some seriously weak names in Romney, Huckabee and Palin (not saying theyd run, of course) but still we cant look that far ahead and say who will even be nominated.

Right.
Did anyone know who John Kerry was in August 2001?

Reality check
Thanks for that. You are so right. I mean, I did, but I follow the Senate a lot more closely than at least 98% of Americans.

Having turned 18 that year
I was just getting into knowledge of politics and only had scant knowledge of most members of Congress and governors, even my own! I did have a little bit of knowledge of KBH, having wrote her and then-Senator Gramm a "letter" in 7th grade in 1996.

But a lot of people knew
who Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were in August 2005.

We saw how that worked out.

The Diaz-Balart plan
Crist appoints Lincoln DB and schedules special for january

Mario DB runs for open seat, wins it, resigns FL-25.

Because his resignation is in February, Crist declines to call for special election for FL-25.

Lincoln DB runs for open seat in FL-25.

Special vs General
Could GOP prefer to hash out the open seat in a special instead of a general?  Perhaps thinking a lower turnout situation favors them. I dunno.  Seems strange on its face.

[ Parent ]
Thats what I was thinking
I wonder if the GOP's chances at holding FL-10 would be better around now, with the GOP base fired up and the new Obama voters not caring about other elections.

A cat can have kittens in an oven but that doesn't make them biscuits.

I hope Young is the one
With a Democrat running with the name of Charlie Justice, this would be a gift.  That name is precious to all Tar Heel fans.

Trivia:  Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice was my alma mater's greatest football player ever.  Of course, he played right after WWII, but he was a kicker, punter, halfback, return man, and Quarterback.  He later played for the Washington Redskins.  Back in my Senior year at UNC, Charlie was honored.  I swear he could have still kicked ass on the grid iron, and he was at least 70 years old.  I believe in good signs...Charlie Justice in 2010!

Maybe the wingnuts are right
Crist is an Obama clone. He is following the same pattern of opening up vulnerable Congressional seats with appointments!

lol! eom.
