Kicking Off the Expand the Map! ActBlue Page for the 2010 Cycle

{First, a cheap plug for my blog Senate Guru.}

Last cycle, I started an ActBlue page specifically for Democratic Senate candidates working to pick up seats held by Republicans.  I named it the Expand the Map! ActBlue page because the goal was to expand the map of competitive Senate seats.  The effort was a big success, achieving over 300 contributions and $40,000 for the Democratic Senate candidates included on the page.

Today, I kicked off the 2010 edition of the Expand the Map! ActBlue page with three Democratic candidates for Senate: Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, New Hampshire Congressman Paul Hodes, and Pennsylvania Congressman Joe Sestak.

Click here to visit the Expand the Map! ActBlue page!

In New Hampshire and Missouri, we have the strongest candidates available, candidates who will also make terrific Democratic Senators.  In both races, however, fundraising will always be a top priority.  Missouri Republican Roy Blunt will be able to tap his lobbyist buddies and corrupt cronies for cash ad nauseum.  No doubt the NRSC will also make holding New Hampshire a top priority; and the D.C. GOP establishment has already begun fawning over Palin-esque quitter Kelly Ayotte.  Carnahan and Hodes need our support!  A few years back, all four of New Hampshire's and Missouri's combined Senate seats were held by Republicans.  Wouldn't it feel great to have flipped all four?

In Pennsylvania, y'all know the deal.  Arlen Specter was a Republican Senator for decades.  Even though he changed his Party affiliation, he's still not a Democrat as far as I'm concerned.  Joe Sestak is a real Democrat, and he - not Specter - should win the Democratic primary.  But Specter has a significant edge when it comes to campaign cash; and, Ed Rendell will do all he can to shut off Sestak's fundraising.  Let Specter, Rendell, etc. know that they can't shut down the netroots by supporting Sestak!

Please, please, please help kick off the 2010 cycle's Expand the Map! effort by sending these highly deserving Democrats a few bucks.  $100 makes a huge difference, $20 makes a huge difference, $10 makes a huge difference!  Hop over to the Expand the Map! ActBlue page and make your voice heard.

This is not just a contribution to these Democrats' campaigns.  This is a contribution toward slowing and eventually stopping Republican obstruction in the U.S. Senate.  Thank you SO much!

Zero reason to put Sestak on there.  Our money could be much better spent elsewhere.

Because Sestak is a better Democrat
than Specter will ever be. Specter does not deserve to get our party's nomination without working for it. Especially since he didn't start voting like a mainstream Democrat would until after it was clear Sestak was going to challenge him.

This isn't expanding the map.
This, plus OH, CT, and IL, are the 'conventional wisdom' map.  They're on everyone's list.

I expected different from the Guru.  His page last year included all the third-tier races that we weren't paying much attention to.

Most map expanding races are not remotely cemented
I expect interesting developments in states like Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Alaska, and elsewhere.  I presume this is more to your liking.  However, in all of these states, Democratic candidates have not definitely announced.  Lots of time.  What races on the cusp are you looking at?

We actually have a candidate in Georgia
RJ Hadley

Who is RJ Hadley?
I haven't heard anything about him.  Do you have links to a website, news reports, etc.?  I'd love to know more.

Given the competitive Democratic gubernatorial primary in Georgia that's building up, I wouldn't be shocked to see one of the gubernatorial candidates shift gears to a Senate race (I have an eye on Poythress).

I keep thinking it'll be Baker that shifts focus
If for no other reason than he's the one rumored to do so.  Well, that, and the fact that he, as the highest-ranking remaining Democrat in Georgia government, may not want a crushing primary defeat (and to be blamed for dragging Barnes down if the primary gets really nasty).  Poythress has said he won't shift, so take that to heart.

Seconding the objection to PA.
Also, seconding whoever said that MO and NH are conventional wisdom.

This is totally not expanding the map, and especially in the case of PA, actually shrinking it.

(Granted, that last bit is assuming your interest, like mine, is in getting Democrats elected without much issue-based preference, but with a preference for getting Democrats elected from red states and red districts just for the satisfaction of sticking it to the Republicans.)

But yeah.  This isn't expanding the map.  On the other hand, if there's an even halfway-viable Democrat in Utah...now that would be expanding the map.

How about Jack Conway in Kentucky
This is expanding the map, because Kentucky is a state where Democrats don't usually win. There are two candidates in the Democratic primary, but apparently that doesn't stop you from putting one of them on the list, since Joe Sestak is on the list. Conway is the more liberal candidate, and the one the netroots left is going to get behind.

I definitely lean Conway over Mongiardo
but it's still very early and I want to learn more and let the race develop further before committing one to Expand the Map! - plenty of time.
