TX-Sen, TX-Gov: KBH Gives Retirement Timeline

It's on.

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison on Wednesday told WBAP's Mark Davis she plans to officially launch her bid for Texas governor in August.  She added that she will step down from the U.S. Senate sometime in October or November to battle incumbent fellow Republican Governor Rick Perry.

Senator Hutchison said he wants to remain in the Senate long enough to fight against President Barack Obama's government healthcare plan and cap and trade.

Hutchison also said, in the same interview, that she'll be voting against Sonia Sotomayor. Gotta burnish those right-wing credentials in order to gear up for the fight over the sizable right-wing base in the GOP primary.

Roll Call has a piece from yesterday that predates this announcement, but discusses the mechanisms for a special election, and also looks a bit more at the potential candidates. GOPers would prefer that Hutchison not resign until when (or if) she actually wins the governor's race, but she appears determined to bolt this year. If she does leave, Gov. Rick Perry will appoint a temporary successor (and signs point to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst), but only until a special election can be held. If KBH resigns anywhere between Sept. 29 to Apr. 2 of next year, the special election, under Texas law, will be held on May 8. (H/t Taegan Goddard.)

Bill White
Bill White has been raising a lot of money. I think he might have a chance at winning her seat.

He's Got a Chance
If any Democrat can break the R monopoly on statewide office (no Democrat has won any of the 15 or so statewide office since the early 90s), I think it's Bill White.  I think the odds are against him, but he has a good chance.

For Bill White to win
he has to win Harris County by 15-20%, win Dallas County by 30%, win Tarrant County, and come close to breaking even in Denton and Collin Counties.  Further, he will need to run up the score in South Texas.  White has little to no appeal in white rural Texas, so he has to make up the deficit in suburban DFW and Houston.

John Sharp came close to beating Dewhurst in 2002 for Lt. Gov, but he did so by winning rural votes.

How likely is any of that?
I mean the Houston 'burbs obviously would seem within the realms of possibility for White but the rest? Looks like a stretch.

Ouch
His Google search result isn't exactly ideal.

Just fine if you're googling from Texas

Looks like you're searching from the UK.

I am
Phew. Don't want Texans thinking Mayor White is a neo-nazi!

[ Parent ]
Though then again...
I jest! :)

[ Parent ]
Actually . . .
I remember a few years back seeing folks wearing t-shirts that read "Bill White is a Nazi!" and had a pic of Mayor White's face on them.

The Birthers/Tea Party fans before they were organized.

Looks like he might want to go by "Howard White" or something.

party: Democratic, ideology: moderate, district: CT-01

[ Parent ]
Not that likely IMO
but Bill White is about the best Democratic candidate we can run in those areas.

All the pieces would have to fall just right for White to win this election.  Similar to what happened in Indiana in 2008.

Should be a fun battle to watch
With the Rubio-Crist primary seeming to fizzle, I'm pumped that we should have at least one good, Republican-Republican political brawl.  And, since it's my home state, I've got  front row tickets to the fight.  I'm tentatively leaning to Hutchison as the least worst option.

Clearly the least worst Repub
I got to watch Kay Bailey deliver a speech at a dinner in D.C celebrating Texas Independence Day. (That's March 2, for you auslanders.)

The speech included a chronological references to the events of the Texas Revolution -- the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Texas, the Fall of the Alamo, the Massacre at Goliad, the Runaway Scrape when civilian settlers ran for their lives toward the US border pursued by the ruthless Gen Santa Anna, and the climactic Battle of San Jacinto.

Poor Kay Bee. She was deep into her speech when she obviously realized that her hapless speechwriter had garbled the dates and order of the events, sort of like putting the Battle of Gettysburg in 1776. She was gonna get an F from half the listeners in the room, those who actually did know their dates, some of whom were stirring uncomfortably in their seats. The Senator apparently knew her state's history well enough to know it was going all wrong, but not well enough to scrap the speech and wing it. So she soldiered on, steam issuing from her ears, and a look on her face that no staffer would want to see the next morning. Clearly she would have preferred to suffer a wardrobe malfunction than to have to recite those wrong dates and events.

Ah well, wine was being served. the audience was mellow, and no one razzed her. After all, it could have happened to anyone reading a speech they hadn't vetted before stepping to the podium. And for that moment I had some sympathy for her myself.

Aside from that, of course, she's a good Republican. I hope she wins the nomination and loses to the Democrat.

That will not happen
If KB wins the primary she wins the general.  If Perry wins the primary, and I think he is the favorite now, the Democrat may be able to beat him.

Perry in the general
I'm skeptical that we'll have a shot against Perry in the general.  I know he's not popular, but we won't have a top tier candidate.  But, this is what polls are for.

[ Parent ]
Perry
Is trying to make himself to be an economic conservative first by appealing to the Tea-Partyers and railing against a real health reform bill. So that might appeal to the 'Country Club Republicans'. Its definitely not all 'god, guns and gays' from Gov. Goodhair these days. Hes trying to shore up KBH's base.

[ Parent ]
Make your mind up Kay
http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/ey...

She doesn't seriously expect Perry to quit does she?

She clearly doesnt want to be in the Senate
There were alot of rumors a few years ago that she was considering not even running for re-election in 06. Shed just rather be in TX. And she must know Perry is the heavy favorite to win. Hes popular amongst social conservatives and now hes trying to rally the fiscal conservatives with his new Sanford-like tactics. The only ones who will really have a problem with him are moderate Republicans and theres not too many of them.

He?
Senator Hutchison said he wants to remain in the Senate long enough to fight against President Barack Obama's government healthcare plan and cap and trade.

I'm guessing the site had a typo up. They have since corrected it.

Thanks for the update.
