New York Ready in Daves Redistricting

Johnny beat the annoucement that New York is ready, with a great map. (Nice going!)

I've also made a couple of improvements to the software, prompted by working with New York:
- Thinner block lines, so you can see the tiny blocks.
- The slow work of Assign Old CDs now happens when you click the button instead of on load. (It took about 4 minutes for NY on my not too slow machine.)
- Zoom: Scrollbar replaces slider.

Here's a link.

Note also: I am looking at partisan data, but it will take some time.

Enjoy.

Thank you very much for this tool
It is really great, I enjoy playing with it quite a bit.

I have a couple requests.

One, is it possible for you to include something in your program that would allow for the user to fill in either an entire county or the remaining unidentified tracts in a county for one district with one click?

Secondly, could you put California to the top of the list for future states?  The reason why I ask this is because California is by far the state for the largest Democratic gains in 2012, and I think it would be helpful if people to get started on it. It is also a state that is very difficult to work on without a tool like this.

Thanks much again.

Thanks
I will try to get to California soon. It's big and the big ones take time.

The other feature would be possible, but I don't see it as high priority. Hopefully you are holding down the mouse and sweeping across blocks rather than clicking each individually.

Thanks.

Thanks again Dave
Let me second the request for the ability to fill in whole counties, or to have some kind of lasso tool. It can be easy to miss small areas.

Thank you very much
I realize that California will take lots of time, but I think it is more important than states like Colorado, Alabama, Mississippi, Wisconsin, etc, where the result of redistricting is pretty clear...  So I guess I'm just advocating for moving California to the front of the line.

But I should stop complaining... :)  Thanks again.

What's involved in creating a state file?
Is this something that we could help you with in a distributed fashion?

If possible
I think it is a great idea for this community

Not sure what goes into making a state file, but if part of it is matching census tract numbers with specific blocks, maybe we can be of some assistance.

Thanks a bunch!

I look forward to it
I have lived in both New York City and Upstate, and I look forward to making districts on your app.

26, male, Dem, NJ-12

That's much better!
The thinner block lines makes it much easier to work in large cities.

thanks you're a lifesaver
How's the political data coming? Are the roadblocks still mucking you up?

Also, did you ever come up with a highlighting function to highlight minority areas in places with big urban areas so its easier to maintain VRA standards?

at this rate
your free software will be better than maptitudes programs which cost thousands of dollars, I would not be surprised if you get those functions in and political data that by 2011 we see some state legislatures using your software to redistrict.

Is there anyway to include voter registration numbers?
I am trying to create some majority-Hispanic districts in GA and I want to make sure that the Hispanics in these districts are eligible to vote. It'd be cool to look at VEP or VAP data if possible. Thanks for all the hard work Dave!

Thanks for getting on New York!
I have been waiting forever to redistrict it. I hope that even though California takes alot of time, you will get it on soon. I have a couple of questions: How soon do you think you will have Illinois on and how soon will any state have partisan data? Thanks again for getting on New York.

Couple questions
First, thank you so much for this app.  And thanks for putting up with all of our junkie-link request for more, more, more!

Speaking of requests (lol), I have a couple:

1. Could you make it so you can toggle between the old and new data?  It's important to see the trends and ascertain potential movement over the next ten years.  I know here in Georgia, there are areas that were very white ten years ago, but have changed rapidly.

2. Also, is it possible to add demographic percentages for census blocks?  Some areas have large concentrations of multiple racial/ethnic groups, but can be missed by just comparing white to black.

Follow the elections in Georgia at the 2010 Georgia Race Tracker.

I'd like that too.
It will be critical when doing districts in California because a lot of areas have high percentages of Latinos or Asians.

I'd like to get the focus
on getting California up and running.  This is the one state where we have the potential of easily getting rid of several Republicans.
