TX-Sen, TX-22: Lampson Declines Senate Bid

From the Austin American-Statesman:

U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson of Stafford, near Houston, is letting it be known he's not running next year for the U.S. Senate seat held by John Cornyn, Lampson's political strategist says.

Mustafa Tameez of Houston, a political consultant to Lampson, said this morning that Lampson, the Democrat who last year captured the U.S. House seat vacated by Tom DeLay of Sugar Land, intends to seek re-election instead fully knowing that his district historically leans Republican.

A Senate bid is "not going to happen," Tameez said. "It sounds goofy, but he feels like he made a commitment to the people of Congressional District 22." Tameez said Lampson feels a Senate try would be "disingenuous."

Tameez aired Lampson's decision to stamp out speculation regarding a Senate bid. "We just want it to stop," he said (unwittingly the desire of some observers of this legislative session).

And I'm glad to hear it.  I've always had my doubts as to whether or not Lampson could be inspiring enough to win stateswide.  With this move, Lampson is securing the goodwill of the local activists who worked their hides off to elect him in the first place last November while clearing the field for another candidate to take a run at Sen. John Cornyn (R).

Good.
Now we can focus on drafting Rick!

Agreed.
Of all the candidates looking at running in TX, Rick Noriega is still my absolute favorite.

Did I hear someone say
Draft Rick?

Latest rumor is that San Antonio attorney Mikal Watts, will jump into the race (Ft Worth attorney Emil Reichstadt has already filed) by the end of the week.

Reichstadt's a cypher-no online web presence, and very little discernible activity at all-and Watts has  been helping raise money for whoever ends up challenging the Senator from Box Turtle.

Thanks to our friends at Act Blue, we in the Texas netroots are doing the same. If you've got a little cash for the kitty, we'd appreciate it.

Still, I'm liking Rick for Senate.  This guy doesn't take crap off anyone, and I'm partial to that.

Baby needs a new United States Senator from Texas...

Boadicea-

Has there been any talk about how Noriega actually feels?  I'm hoping he goes for it, but has he expressed any interest?  Also, if Watts does file (and it seems like he announces his exploratory committee on June 1) would that keep Noriega out?  I don't know exactly what is going on, but it would not surprise me if the DSCC is going to try and persuade any possible candidates from challenging Watts.  Hope not, but I'd appreciate your input on the situation.

Draft Rick!

Watts
would make a fine candidate. I just think Rick's military experience and political experience makes him more electable.

I like Watts a good deal too though. I think he'd be a fine candidate. Is he rich enough to self-fund? Even if he can't he's already proven he can raise funds like mad.

Rick's interested
I don't think the prospect of a contested primary with Mikal Watts will scare him off.  Watts supported Juan Garcia's run for the legislature last cycle, and is very good at raising money. However, IIRC he's never held public office, so the prospect of having his first run being for the US Senate is something that concerns me slightly. (For anyone who doesn't already know, I am part of the Draft Rick movement.)

Rick just finished a brutal legislative session-including a rules meltdown over the closing weekend.

(The Speaker declared himself a Unitary Power after firing or forcing the resignation of the parlimentarian and her asst who stood up to him and replacing them with two former members of the house who lost their last elections. The straw parlimentarians ruled the Speaker didn't have to recognize a motion to vacate the chair, and that eventually led to a quorum busting walkout.  Now you know why Ann Richards called Texas politics a contact sport.)

Add that to the fact that his wife, Melissa Noriega, has a runoff for Houston City Council (this is not a small race, btw, but a runoff for an at large council place for the fourth largest city in the country) and a decision to jump into the Senate race will probably not come as quick as I'd like it to.

But hey, if it were easy we wouldn't need a draft  movement.

If it were impossible we wouldn't have Senators Jim Webb and Jon Tester-both of whom had contested primaries with well funded and connected opponents.

I'm in favor of contested primaries in general, because I think it can force campaigns to sharpen their edge before they get to the general election.

The good news is that we have multiple good prospects vying for the chance to take on Box Turtle's sorry Senatorial ass.

Maybe we should sponsor an arm-wrestling contest...

Correction, apparently Mikal Watts
is in Corpus Christi.  I could have sworn I read it was San Antonio, and his firm does have an office there.  However, they list him in the Corpus Christ office, and since it's his firm, I assume they'd know where to find him...

Correct the first time
Mikal used to live in Corpus Christi, he moved to San Antonio.  His mother, Sandra Watts, is currently a state district court judge in Corpus.
