NY-Sen-B, NY-Gov: First Test of Gillibrand v. Maloney

by: DavidNYC

Quinnipiac University (6/16-21, registered voters, 5/5-11 in parens):

Kirsten Gillibrand (D-inc): 23
Carolyn Maloney (D): 27
Undecided: 44
(MoE: ±3%)

Kirsten Gillibrand (D-inc): 44 (4)
Peter King (R): 28 (28)
Undecided: 26 (28)

Carolyn Maloney (D): 42
Peter King (R): 26
Undecided: 30
(MoE: ±2%)

David Paterson (D-inc): 20 (17)
Andrew Cuomo (D): 57 (62)
Undecided: 20 (18)
(MoE: ±3%)

David Paterson (D-inc): 34 (32)
Rudy Giuliani (R): 52 (54)
Undecided: 7 (8)

Andrew Cuomo (D): 51 (47)
Rudy Giuliani (R): 39 (41)
Undecided: 8 (9)
(MoE: ±2%)

Quinnipiac sees a slight uptick for Paterson - a trend? Meanwhile, Rudy Giuliani had an op-ed in the NYT yesterday (and has been carving out a slightly higher profile for himself of late by complaining, along with everyone else, about the mess in Albany). We speculated that a recent NYT op-ed by Tom Suozzi was a signal that he's ready to start ramping things up. Perhaps the same is true here.

In the Senate department, the first test of Gillibrand vs. Maloney shows what almost all NY-Sen-B primary polls have shown - that the players are still mostly unknown throughout the state, and that Peter King would be doomed. Recognizing that King is not much of a foil, Gillibrand of late has been raising the specter of a Pataki run in her fundraising emails. While the NRSC, as CQ notes, may want him to run, George P. hasn't made any affirmative moves in that direction yet.

More discussion in mkpowers' diary.

Cuomo is clearly not getting in.  I hope Suozzi plans on getting in.  A slight uptick in these numbers does not give me any faith in Paterson.

I still have no idea how Maloney is outpolling Gillibrand.  Gillibrand is racking up endorsements and doing everything right and Maloney has just been downright nasty.

Endorsements don't make up for a poor record
Maloney has a far better (and more consistent) record than Gillibrand. She's been a strong advocate of average New Yorkers, and doesn't flip-flop on serious issues to advance her career.

Good record
Gillibrand has been an excellent senator. Maloney has been pro-war and not very smart, and while Gillibrand had a good reason to skew to the right when she represented a swing district, Maloney was simply stupid to support an attack on Iraq that she confusedly conflated with New York having been attacked by Al Qaida. No-one has any reason to be anything but consistently liberal as a representative of any district in Manhattan, and Maloney is not that liberal. And by the way, if you think she doesn't "flip flop," you haven't followed her career long enough. Do you remember when she voted against Clinton's first budget? I do, and have previously posted about it.

So we're down to IQ jokes then?
If the only thing in your bag of tricks is calling Maloney stupid, you clearly don't have much of a case, and Gillibrand is in trouble.

And getting an A+ from the NRA, being the lowest rated NY representative on human rights, and getting the Chuck Schumer to try and jerry-rig the NY primary system are all smart decisions?!

I don't represent Gillibrand
I'm a former constituent of Maloney. Read her Senate speech on why she supported the Iraq War resolution yourself, except that she may have "revised and extended her remarks" in the Record to make herself sound less confused. I heard her speak live on C-Span and haven't forgotten or forgiven it, and she remains pro-war today. Senator Clinton's statement at the time was dishonest and offensive, but Maloney's was just downright confused and ignorant. Schumer also voted for the war resolution, and I haven't forgiven him for that vote, either.

The other things you're talking about are irrelevant to Gillibrand's performance as Senator.

As for as Governor Paterson's performance is concerned, including the way he ran the senatorial appointment process, I think it sucks.

By the way
Since you seem to think I represent Gillibrand, do you represent Maloney? You just joined and haven't commented on anything except Maloney. If you do work for her, don't you think it would be better to be up front about it?

Gillibrand has a strong progressive record!
Why do people keep reflexively repeating media talking points without examining detail and context? Very simplistic.

Gillibrand did not represent a "moderate" district--it was very conservative, and traditionally Republican. She beat a 4-time incumbent to win, and dutifully represented her constituents in that area, earning a 70% approval rating. The District includes the Adirondacks, which has a long history of outdoors sports, including hunting. Her favorable rating with the NRA was based on only 3 votes over the course of a single congressional term, and her position on guns has always been based on protecting the rights of sports hunters while keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals. Her voting record is solidly progressive. She opposed the war in Iraq, is a staunch advocate of women's rights, pay equity and choice; gay rights; stem cell research; increasing the minimum wage; and expanding affordable housing, Head Start and SCHIP.  She is also greatly respected for her experience in financial services and banking. She has been endorsed by numerous progressive democratic issue-groups, including the ACLU, the League of Conservation Voters, EMILY'S List, NARAL, the Sierra Club, and the AFL- CIO. Finally, her voting record was 93% party line, even while representing a conservative district. Let's see Maloney walk that tight rope successfully. It's easy to throw mud from the Upper East Side, when you haven't had to deal with a spectrum of voters. Gillibrand is working very hard to meet and collaborate with new constituent groups, and Maloney is taking cheap shots by bringing up discredited reports like her work as an associate for a law firm representing the tobacco industry.

Lastly, Maloney risks losing her seniority in the House, and on the Joint Economic Committee. If she did win, she would enter the Senate with no seniority, and little time to build it. Gillibrand has the chance to develop into a powerful Senator. It would benefit NY most if they use their respective roles to collaborate in their efforts to bring resources and attention to NY needs.

Really
Out of a 119 word comment you chose to respond to 3.  Don't know what other blogs you visit but the discussion here is usually of a much higher calibre than that.

[ Parent ]
Were you responding to Pan
Or NYProg?

[ Parent ]
How
Because she's a better fit for New York State Democrats.  No matter how much money Daddy, Chuck Schumer and Al D'Amato raise for Gillibrand.

Agreed
There are some weird forces at play here.  I am willing to write off one poll, maybe two, but when three consecutive polls come out showing Kirsten Gillibrand losing to opponents who haven't even been campaigning, I start wondering why...  I guess NYers are just too smart for the show that Schumer and Gilly are putting on.

I think the NY Post had it right this weekend:

Unlike Hillary Clinton, whose seat she filled, Gillibrand can't even pretend to point to a lengthy "listening tour" in which she supposedly learns the issues.

Rather, she's been on a checklist tour -- meeting with one special interest, finessing her past positions to get its support, then moving on to the next.

NY Post: http://www.nypost.com/seven/06...

Then in an Emily's List email today, she had the nerve to compare herself to Hillary.  Cmon.

The poll doesn't support that
44% undecided, a whopping 63% don't have an opinion on Gillibrand.

[ Parent ]
Wow
Favorably citing a New York Post editorial on a liberal blog? That's... certainly something I've never seen before.

[ Parent ]
Nowadays Gillibrand is a better fit
She has a Blue Dog record, but Maloney voted for the war. Neither of them is going to be a liberal lion, but it's probably actually Maloney who's more likely to pull a Feinstein on us.

NY
As someone who lives in NY, I have been very impressed with Gillibrand since shes been in the Senate.  No idea what you guys haven't liked so far.

Maloney on the other hand has already started off with mudslinging and general nastiness we do not need in primaries.

29/D/Male/NY-01

Gillibrand has been doing everything right
Sure, she could suddenly go back to her old ways right after the election, but I don't get that feeling from her.

Democrats should avoid a costly divisive primary

Kirsten Gillibrand is an effective progressive advocate for New York.  Like her predecessor and supporter, Hillary Clinton, she is smart, funny, caring, thoughtful, open-minded, progressive and tough.  And like Clinton, the more voters meet her, the greater her support.
This is reflected by the growing number of impressive endorsements from opinion leaders all across the state.

NY Democrats have had terrible experiences with oversized political egos, think D'Amato and Buckley,  Better they should coalesce around Gillibrand and avoid a nasty, costly and divisive primary and save their strength and money to beat the Republican.

NY Sen & Gov
These early polling numbers are a 'fool's gold' and represent nothing more than name recognition and voter frustration with DC and especially with Albany.
When focused on the issues and actual ballot names, Senator Gillibrand will ace this test.
As for Gov Patterson, even he still has time to flip this around and become a winner.

Disagree on Paterson
He's gotten a deeply ingrained reputation as incompetent. I would be totally flabbergasted if he recovers.
