CA-10: Victim of DADT running for Congress.

by: ARDem

When Ellen Tauscher announced she was headed for the State Department it seemed there would be no shortage of Democrats running to replace her in this safe district, including California's Lt. Gov, John Garamendi, who ducked out of the race for governor when he got no traction and decided not to contest Republican held CA-03.  Recently though, CNN's Campbell Brown (bleck!) interviewed a candidate I hadn't heard anything about until now, and after watching the clip I walked away impressed.

ARDem :: CA-10: Victim of DADT running for Congress.
Anthony Woods is impressive for many reasons.  Raised by a single mother, he went on to serve his country in two tours in Iraq, receive an education at Harvard and a Master's degree from the Kennedy School of Government.  He was a co-recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Public Service Award and organized missions to help rebuild hurricane-ravaged New Orleans.  Hell, he spent a summer bicycling across the country to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.  But all that wasn't good enough for his government.  Woods wanted to serve his country on a third tour of Iraq, but was discharged simply because he is gay.

Woods comes off as a very polished speaker, and he clearly knows from his interview with Brown how to avoid putting his foot in his mouth.  What's more, the guy is well rounded, having worked as an economic policy advisor, giving him credibility on what is probably always the number one issue in a campaign.  Personally though, I'm excited about the possibility of sending a victim of DADT to Congress to give the LGBT community a voice and a face there for this unjust policy that Obama has, frankly, failed us on.  What's more, Woods would be the first black-LGBT person elected to Congress and could potentially work to build bridges and initiate dialogue between two communities that don't always see eye to eye.

The iceing on the cake???  Woods is a self-described progressive Democrat.  He's a clear underdog in this race with plenty of big names and established politicians, but Woods has a lot of personal qualities that hint at the possibility of an upset.  Clearly, he's someone we need to watch.

Do we know when the 10th's election is yet?
He's got an awfully big hill to climb to beat the Lt. Gov. among others, but a gay military man of color is a pretty impressive candidate.

Not that I support him
But it would be kinda neat to see someone thats been hurt, and in turn, our nation has been hurt, by the outdated, unfair policies like DADT.

A cat can have kittens in an oven but that doesn't make them biscuits.

The more people in Congress affected
by these policies, the more likely we are to getting Congress to act on them.  Not that I think Congress would grow a spine overnight should someone like Woods win, but can't hurt.

It does puzzle me
Why there has been no real action on fixing this problem. Its not like DADT is even popular. Although from hearing from one of my best friends who is in the Marines, DADT is pretty selectly enforced, as he has served with more than a few openly gay Marines.

I've heard it was selectively
enforced as well.

I don't know why they haven't moved on this.  I know things like health care are important, but a DADT vote should be relatively simple, at least in the House, if not the Senate.  But if the House acted, that would at least push it on the Senate for action.

[ Parent ]
It's even simpler than a vote.
Obama could get rid of it by executive order.

Even if he could,
I'd rather the law be changed so the next GOP President can't simply revoke the executive order.

But I'm not sure.  I guess he could stop the enforcement, but at this point, he seems completely unwilling to do so.  So, it's back to square one.

[ Parent ]
Really?
I'm a little skeptical that Obama can change a law by executive order, but I'm willing to be educated on the matter.

[ Parent ]
No he can't
There are only two ways to void a Congressional statute which has already been signed into law:

1. The Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional
2. Congress passes a law voiding it

If President Obama were to try issuing an executive order overturning a Congressional statute, it would almost certainly be ruled unconstitutional by the courts. In any case, I don't like the idea of the President being able to, at the drop of a hat, get rid of any laws which he simply doesn't like, regardless of who the president is (or would you like to potentially see someone like Jeb Bush or the like have that power?)

Actually you're wrong.

and Harry Reid agrees.

Congress leaves the executive branch with broad authority to set the rules here in recognition of the President's role as commander in chief.  At the very least, Obama could stop current investigations on his own, but he's made it clear time and time again that he's tone deaf when he comes to gays and we're just not high on his to do list.  That's why we need candidates like this guy to make him do it even if we have to drag him to it kicking and screaming.

Oh big shocker there...
Harry Reid doesn't have the spine to try to get something done in the senate, get me the smelling salts!

In any case, I still don't think that going the route of fiat by Executive Order is the best way of doing this, as it's temporary (at best) and it doesn't change the fact that the United States Military officially recognizes "homosexual conduct" as being immoral and harmful to unit cohesion (both of which are bullshit, in my opinion, but that's beside the point). On top of that, a move like this would really piss off the top military brass and makes it more likely that they do things to screw him over, including making it harder to repeal DADT later on (or to add in language which would prohibit the military from discriminating based on sexual orientation).

You know what, I absolutely would support him
This last week has convinced me that gays need more descriptive representation.

Im starting to believe this more and more
as our straight allies in Washington fail the GLBT community more and more.  (DADT isnt even planned on getting repealed anytime soon)

[ Parent ]
Our gay allies - Human Rights Campaign among others
aren't much better these days...

[ Parent ]
They're ineffective partly
because they're insular, but also because they're easily ignored. Tammy, Jared, and Barney are great, but they're an order of magnitude fewer than what we probably need. And that's to say nothing of the Senate. . .

[ Parent ]
Holy crap!
We absolutely need this guy in our party!

Thanks
Thanks for bringing him to our attention. I was disappointed in the interview that he dodged repeatedly on the question of whether he was disappointed that President Obama hasn't given higher priority to DADT repeal. I would answer an unambiguous "YES" to that question. So Mr. Woods surely is a politician, in that negative sense of exercising the ability to dodge and weave when politically expedient. But having said that, he does seem admirable, and I wish him good luck in this race.

Come now
Would you wish alienating a popular Democratic president in a tough Democratic primary?

He could be less slippery
How about "Of course I would love for things to move more quickly, but..." - and then an explanation of what else the president has on his plate.

Store Robbery
I would agree that would is very impressive. I just hope that he will give attention to the state issue here in California if ever. There is an alarming rate of store robbery here! Store robbery, or small scale robberies, hasn't skyrocketed during this recession the way it was assumed they would.  This doesn't mean store robbery doesn't happen, as payday loan stores are the preferred targets these days, and a recent incident in California went far more awry than previous incidents.  A man robbed a payday lender at gunpoint, and then when police were on their way, he grabbed an elderly customer and forced him into a vehicle at gunpoint.  Then, a car chase ensued, as the man sped off starting in Lake Forest, and flying through the Laguna area at speeds upward of 120 mph.   He was captured, and will need short term loans for a lawyer for his store robbery defense.

Heads up.
Looks like Mr. Woods will be liveblogging on firedoglake Saturday.

I interviewed Woods a few weeks ago
Meet Anthony Woods - A Rising Young Progressive Star

His campaign is being managed by Todd Stenhouse who ran Charlie Brown's near upset in CA-04 in 2008 - Todd is a superb manager so I give Anthony a real shot here to pull the upset - I donated a little and will give more when I can
